He’s the world’s most enigmatic and dangerous dictator, cultivating an air of secrecy around himself and never giving interviews. But what do we really know about Supreme Leader and ’Rocket Man’, Kim Jung Un? Posing as tourists, we travelled to Pyongyang to experience life under his autocracy.
Born the third son, by Kim Jong II’s second wife, Kim Jong-un’s childhood remains somewhat mysterious. When he succeeded his father in 2011, many thought he was too young and weak to take power. They under-estimated him. He soon removed or executed all of the most powerful members of the regime. The most notorious ’elimination’ was the murder of his older half-brother, Kim Jong Nam, in Malaysia.
Back in Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un recently declared that he wants two million foreigners to visit the country each year. But the experience of American tourist and student, Otto Warmbier, is bound to put many off. After being arrested for stealing a propaganda poster and imprisoned for two years, Warmbier died shortly after being returned to America in a coma. According to rumours, he had also tried to access a forbidden floor in the hotel. All over Pyongyang - from the museum of American atrocities to leaders’ statutes in the main square - Kim Jong Un’s propaganda is omnipresent. At the age of 34 - in addition to his career as leader - Kim Jong-un has apparently already taken the time to author a dozen books.
All over the city, people are uniform, synchronised and smiling. But above all, subservient. At all times, North Korea remains a society under control.
Released in 2017.

This is a dumb documentary, just like most other western documentaries. They get everything wrong, the DPRK is lied about so many times in this documentary, and in so many books as well, for example the defector shin don-hyuk even admitted himself he lied about most things he said in his book. I don't think you quite understand what she was *really* saying there. North Koreans can't explicitly say anything unsavory about the regime out loud. They have to be extremely careful with their words, and it's up to you to read their body language & facial expressions to be able to grasp what they're trying to convey to a foreigner. It's forbidden for a woman to swear in public in North Korea. What she was really saying was, "Of course it's bullshit. I've been working here for several years by now- but I ain't losing my life, paycheck, or freedom over it by saying that out loud for these hidden recording devices to pick up." She was trying to tip him off to this by swearing in her response to him in order to demonstrate her willingness to break ranks with the party on some occasions.

I was able to travel to the DPRK in 2018. the level of surveillance is mental, even china wasn't as heavy handed with it. literally there was a mic in the wet sauna at the hotel. Any negative thoughts you have, keep them to yourself till you leave. Saying this though the people I was able to interact with were lovely, timid, but lovely. The staff at every site were so happy to be asked any non-political questions and loved to ask questions in return. If your going to the DPRK and you were born in any countries that used to be USSR you'll be the favourite. Also if you go to the theme park you'll become part of the attractions.

I understand the curiousity but I'd rather visit a much safer place where I'm not constantly watched by guides and can't do normal things they even deleted pictures they seem illegal smh the torture camps and starvation is beyond sanity and they can't just leave they're trapped and call defectors they even go great lengths to arrest and interrogate the entire family even distant family who doesn't even know each other well. They have food and clothes in stores but it's for prop not sell when the starving people could use it especially children living on the streets trying to survive some don't make it because they are malnourished don't receive proper medical care either. Some day the people hopefully will finally rise up against this maniac psychopath dictator his pomp fat behind eat the very best while starving his own people. Whenever i see warmbier's confession, i see a young man who knows he's in deep sh!t but still clueless as to what he's truly in for. Has to be among the most savage way to die. its a true tragedi what happend to otto warmbier , the way he must have been treated in NK , since he came back in the condition he did to home and died only weeks later . what i do find disgusting done by donald trump is what he did after otto came home and died , he first invited otto´s parents to show how cold hearted kim jong un is , he really showed how much he cared for otto´s parents and the loss of their son , then a while later , he becomes best friends with kim jong un , he sais what a good and pleasent person kim jong is and they had so much fun together .

Two things are clear : 1. Even if you are a normal human being when you are young, the drug of having the power over the life and death of others is the most powerful drug. 2. He is indeed a master of survival. Everything he is doing is just to preserve his life and not finish it like his fellow dictators as Ceaușescu, Saddam or Gheddafi, just to name some of them.

Well, only time will tell how much of a master of survival he is. Because of the geography, it’s a lot easier to keep the nation far more isolated than Eastern Europe was under the Soviet Bloc. Much could depend on China, which has the longest border with North Korea. There is a tiny stretch which borders Russia, and then there is the DMZ. So North Koreans have far less exposure to other nations and cultures than Eastern Europeans did. There’s also very few North Koreans alive who remember anything other than being ruled by the Kim dynasty. As long as the regime doesn’t get aggressive, and try to attack another nation, the regime will likely be “safe” from outside interference. But if they ever try to use a nuke, or even sell one to a third party, then they risk annihilation.
@cpalamariu
@cpalamariu 2 жыл бұрын
You are right about the geographic position of North Korea. You are right about the isolation. But... I lived the last years of the romanian comunist regim as a teenager. And I remember my father listening to Free Europe radio, hidden in the kitchen with the lowest volume possible with his ear "glued" to the radio keeping update with the free world. And I remember as a a child doing all these dancing shit on the stadium, singing and thanking our dictator for the beautiful life we had. This just to say that even if there are generations under Kim dinasty, freedom is a natural state of mind and all the crying, cheering and happiness you see is fake. People know they live in a prison state.

Interesting insight. Probably much like the Ceausescu regime in the final years, there are apparently loads of people in North Korea who manage to watch smuggled movies and other programs from South Korea and the West, much like your father listening to Radio Free Europe. The North Korean security service is probably even more hardcore than the Securitate was, but, yes, those little infusions of insight into the rest of the world can genuinely make a difference over time. Ironic that you, as a Romanian, should be commenting on this, because Ceausescu got the idea for all of those mass demonstrations and dances, etc. from Kim Il Sung in the '70s. They look VERY similar. People from the Ceausescu era can probably relate quite well to the North Koreans.

The date of 8 January is consistent everywhere where it lists the day & month. I wonder which Year is correct??

Don’t forget that North Korea claims that the US started the Korean War in the first place, which is utter nonsense. It’s pretty clear that North Korea began the war by invading South Korea. They even caught the Soviets by surprise, because while I’m sure some Soviet officials knew it was coming, their UN delegation was boycotting UNSC meetings, and thus wasn’t present to use their veto to a UNSC resolution authorizing a military response to the aggression of North Korea. The US had the largest military contingent, but several nations participated in the conflict. Given that, I question all other claims made by the Kim regime. War does have its atrocities, some of which are avoidable, but these claims of the regime are not very specific. And the Korean conflict was very different from Vietnam, where many combatants were not in any uniform. It was much more of a guerrilla war than the Korean War. There were many South Koreans who died in that conflict as well. It’s also important to keep this in mind. In 1950, the South Korean government was not much different from the Kim regime. It was a tyrannical dictatorship. But credit to the South Koreans, who transformed itself into a prosperous democracy. In 1950, and for years afterwards, it was South Korea that was seen as the poorer and less developed of the two Koreas. That obviously has changed, and it’s likely a key reason why the North Korean regime is terrified that it’s people might discover what has happened in South Korea. It’s continued existence as a flourishing democracy is completely contrary to the propaganda that North Korea feeds its own people. They train their people to think that they are far better off than those Koreans living in South Korea. That’s why they dare not allow their people to find out what life is REALLY like south of the DMZ.
