Luke C. (@ballisticaviation) is on the scene at NRA 2023 to check out Kimber’s new ultra-light, ultra-slim, double action single action revolver, the K6xs. The K6xs not only improves the carry weight and profile of the revolver, it adds back useful features like an improved set of sights over other short barreled revolvers.

Kimber got this one right by going 38 Special +P and not 357 Magnum for this very lightweight aluminum-framed revolver. I agree with that 100%. Recoil would be just too much for this light of a gun for the vast majority of people. Another thing they got right was these Hogue grips. I love those! And the weight of 16 ounces is about the same as my Smith 642. Looks like Kimber made a good decision here with this one.

Smart going 38 for the lightweight. People who want a 357 air-weight clearly have not shot from one. They definitely don’t train with it. 38 +p is more than enough for the role a snubbie would fill.

I totally agree. And I also think Kimber got this one right by going 38 special in this lightweight frame. 357 is great in heavy steel framed guns but NOT in lightweight alloy revolvers. WARNING! Many years ago, I purchased a Kimber K6s and it was one of those that ended up with a broken firing-pin. I returned it to Kimber and they replaced the pin. Recently I bought a Kimber K6xs and loved it until after 120 rounds of +p (and only dry-firing it using snap-caps) you guessed it, the firing-pin broke. Now, I was worried about using my original K6s with that pin Kimber replaced. I found a website that makes upgraded replacement firing-pins for the Kimber K6s and purchased a replacement pin and had it installed by a gunsmith. I now have that gun working fine and stopped worrying on the reliability factor. Because of the broken pin in the K6xs, I will be purchasing another pin (I will not be returning the gun to Kimber) for the K6xs. I am not the only person with a broken firing-pin on my new K6xs, there is another firing-pin break with a K6xs talked about at Buds Guns in the “community” section. I feel safer buying a new well-made pin and paying a gunsmith to install it.

I'm confused. Which dimension is smaller than the K6S? According to Kimbers website, the K6XS is taller and longer (I think both are because of the Hogue grips) than the stainless gun, and the cylinder can't be appreciably smaller to still hold 6 rounds and fit the same holsters. Despite that, this video and the Kimber website both indicate that this is a smaller gun.
@Hawtload
@Hawtload Жыл бұрын
my only guess is that by "K6S" they mean the full K6S line like the target and match. Although their website says "larger FRAMED sibling" which says to me a frame size like the SP101 vs GP100. Since they fit the same holsters, best I can tell these are literally the same dimensions with some extra machining and materials in the XS to reduce weight.

Are you capable with the 12 pound trigger? I don’t think I could do what that kid in the mall in Indiana did recently with a double action. Less important, but my primary motivation, is the use of the hammer while holstering. There isn’t a single thing in the world more secure feeling than holstering a double action appendix with your thumb on the back of the hammer. If your concern is snagging, the hammer can be bobbed down and rounded to be smooth while still allowing purchase for cocking. It simply makes it a more versatile and useful firearm.

@@banditone00 you're completely wrong... the recent defensive ammo offerings from several manufacturers really allow even a 2" snubby to seriously stretch its ccw capabilities beyond the stereotypical 0-7 yds 'get off me gun' role it's been thought of up to recently, up to 20 yds and beyond; and this is only the beginning of this trend in ammo design/capabilities... especially if carried in a dedicated ankle/minimalistic holster instead of merely in a pocket... in many certain scenarios and distances of beyond 10 yds a s/a trigger can be indispensable and even so on a 2" snubnose thanks to the advances in ammo capabilities...i'd seriously consider the purchase of this handgun as an alternative to my smith models 360pd, 637 and the ruger lcrx but will not precisely because of lack of this s/a option whereas i might seriously do so if it's offered in a sa/da version... your opinion is dated and invalid, check out some recent videos on 38 spl ballistic ammo and distances up to 70yds tests in snubbies and open your mind to possibilities... i've already replied elsewhere in this comment section to your nearly identical comment but apparently you've removed it by the time i clicked the 'reply'...

I made the mistake or ordering one of these. I wanted a light weight snub revolver to everyday carry. I liked it's 6 shot capacity and the grip it comes with. Mine ended up being junk. The cylinder would shift/cant when the cylinder release button was pushed. The ejector rod was sloppy, the ejector rod star was loose fitting. Sometimes the trigger would bind up when being dry fired and sometimes a strange (crunchy) sound could be heard when the revolver was being dry fired. The revolver had machine/tool marks on the blast shield and the side plate was poorly fitted. The fit and finish was rough. Definitely poor quality control on Kimber's part. I had high hopes for it but ended up getting rid of it.

9mm, or any auto cartridge for that matter, is not a good choice for a revolver. If you are gonna carry a revolver, use ammo designed for it. A friend of mine thought he got a good deal on a used Ruger LCR in 9mm. But the moon clips just didn't work well. The rounds would not stay in place in the cylinder and cause jams. Not all the time, but often enough for him to notice. For that problem to happen in a gun you are going to trust your life with, well, that's not acceptable. He ended up selling it.

There are lighter revolvers than this Kimber, specifically the Ruger LCR and S&W AirLite, available in a variety of chamberings including .357 Magnum (although .32 is ideal in these ultralights if you ask me). Still, you could carry a Ruger LCP Max with more rounds. Or a Kel-Tec P-32 that's lighter than any revolver. But I really like the S&W AirLites. They're all about 11-12oz. The practical advantages are few, and they're thicker than semi-autos, but at this weight they're not much worse, just different. People like that they won't go out of battery and be disabled during a contact shot, although there are certainly ways a revolver can be manipulated not to fire. In the small mousegun pistol calibers (smaller than .380), few semi-autos are reliable. Basically, you've got the Beretta tip-up barrel mini-pistols, the Kel-Tec P-32, and the Ruger LCP .22, and they're all good but not perfect. The revolvers are more reliable. In .22LR, they're especially competitive against small semi-autos, as they hold a lot of ammo in the cylinder and they will cycle a dud round due to their nature. On the other hand, rimfire revolvers have heavy triggers. I think they're a strong selection for a backup gun or small deep concealment piece, if you don't demand the absolute smallest and lightest gun. And in small calibers, they're more competitive. Once you get to 9mm, the semi-auto is clearly more efficient and sometimes more reliable. Although there are some niche uses. I think the Chiappa Rhino in 9mm would make a good heavier home defense pistol for someone averse to recoil who wants to shoot a 9mm and doesn't mind the limited capacity. Revolvers tend to be easier to use and maintain, which is important when dealing with gun owners who are not hobbyists and just want to stick a gun in their sock drawer and forget about it for years until they need it. Revolvers are a little more intuitive.

So it's heavier than the Ruger LCR and S&W AirLite revolvers that have been successful on the market for many years now, in a variety of chamberings including .357 (although I prefer .32 in these ultralight guns). I'm glad to see a new competitor in the lightweight snubnose market, but does this heavier Kimber offer any superior features or advantages to the proven reliable competitiors?

@@LA_Commander well it's 15.9oz vs 14.4oz when compared with smith 642 [sans the internal lock version] so plus 1.5 oz difference although kimber costing more $... so this new kimber is slightly heavier and this might still be justified given the regular k6's rather very good reputation as expressed by many experienced owners and wheelgun users... however, at a slightly higher cost of competition and if one's objective is a quality ULTRALIGHT snubnose. then imo it loses on all fronts to smith's models 340pd/360pd because compared to the 340pd sans internal lock model's weight, the difference is then a whopping additional 4.2oz... and only 0.1 less to the sa/da 360pd which although both 340pd/360pd] are officially chambered in .357mag, they should really be thought of as ultralight .38 spl snubbies imo... in the latter's cases the weight difference is huge favoring both smiths if carry weight is the predominant factor and the 360pd offers sa/da option which is another huge plus for the smith imo... personally have never owned or even shot one but have heard/read good things about kimber's [much heavier] standard k6s 2" and 3" snubnoses so personally i would quite possibly consider this new k6xs as an alternative to my smith/ruger u/l snubbies but only if offered in sa/da variant... lastly, as some others commented, an additional perk would be to see the sa/da version in also 9mm and .327mag/.32 s&w variants, especially if the 9mm could be made more versatile and easier to use than ruger's current offering which requires use of very fragile clips and has other issues according to some reviews... i've been jonesing for an uber reliable, versatile 9mm ultralight snubnose just to have that caliber option to the ubiquitous semiautos...

@@lordofthemound3890 You're right, I completely missed the obvious. The cylinder is a little wider to fit the extra round, but it's a compromise many are willing to make. Plus, it's a high-quality gun despite the fixed sights. I myself might put up with some minor downsides for an extra round, if I wanted a .38 Special. I prefer .32 or 327 in these really lightweight guns, though, so I'd still be getting six rounds with other revolvers.

Bring this out in 22 mag and with a hammer and I'd get really excited. I'd heard the K6s were really nice guns but way over priced. This looks like a reasonable option. The only Kimber I ever owned was a Pro 1911 and I sold it immediately after discovering it had a plastic mainspring housing. Really Kimber.

You don't want to fire full power 357 in a small, lightweight aluminum revolver like that. The recoil sucks and it would be much harder to be accurate with it. Kimber got this one right by making it in 38 Special +P.

The last time I had hands-on experience with kimbers revolvers was when I went in specifically to purchase a Kimber K6s. Dealer had a hard time selling the floor model and offered a discount. After offering a discount, they decided not to sell this item due to it not functioning properly (could not open cylinder). Now, I will never buy Kimber due to malfunction issues.
