This video shows an ILS approach in a very rare aircraft: the King Air F90.
A very powerful version of the King Air 90, with T-tail and 750HP PT6 engines.
ATC is recorded and subtitles describe the actions int he cockpit.
A slide show at the end with photos of the ferry flight from South Africa to the USA rounds up the video.

I saw this video and my heart jumped. When I read the description, and I saw the ZS reg, I got goosebumps, a huge lump in my throat and my eyes started tearing. The owner of this plane was someone I knew very well, respected and looked up to all my life. I had my very first flight in a C182 with him when I was still a schoolboy. He sold his beloved F90 last year or the year before, and I always knew that the day he stopped flying, would be close to his end. He passed away the day before Christmas, 24 December 2021. RIP, may you now fly forever😢

Seeing what goes on inside the cockpit, while I may not understand it, somehow makes it less scary. I do miss my flying days -since my retirement from the airline industry sixteen years ago, this is the closest I get to flying these days, riding my BMW RT1200 which I have had from new for the last sixteen years. I've landed at Prestwick many times, its claim to fame is that this is the only place in the U.K. that the late Elvis Presley stepped foot on when he was a conscript in the U.S. military. Nice flight and aircraft.

Great job, as always Guido. What a treat to fly the fantastic F90 - they are getting rarer by the day, but obviously outperform every other -90 variant. Sorry to see the Garmin 500, which I do not feel is befitting of a King (I feel a Proline 21 is the right kit for this pedigree). Just a quick question - this is single pilot, but what is the right hand HSI tuned to? It's not on the ILS, but maybe it is set up for the missed approach? Thanks!

that's your propeller synchronization indicator. when it spins one way or another that means one propeller is spinning faster than the other

The King Air is a nice plane, but its also a very complicate one.

It is an older aircraft by design, so it has a lot more switches than modern business jets. But it is fun to fly. Once you know one King Air type, the others are VERY similar. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

Nice! That was a long flight. How long did it take? What was that gauge in the center of the co-pilot's yoke?

Thank you Ken. The flight was around 50 hours in total. The instrument on the co-pilot's yoke is a nice mechanical stopwatch! Aircraft was built in the 1980's. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

Wieder ein Klasse Video Guido. Was mir aufgefallen ist,: der Ton war dieses Mal übersteuerter als sonst. Greifst du den Ton über die Headset Kabel ab, oder hast du ein Lavalier Mic im Headset?

Ton kommt über das Headset Kabel. Ich weiss nicht, warum die Qualität so schlecht war. So hörte sich das aber auch im intercom an. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

@@GuidoWarnecke Dann ist es was am Funk und Intercom. Wenn der Input schlecht ist, kann man nur wenig machen. Aus Hackfleisch kannst auch kein Filet machen ;-)

Hi Guido, does this aircraft have vpath/vnac capture? Or do you need to manually pitch the command bars to follow the vpath?

Hi Alexander, if I remember correctly, the autopilot is coupled to the Vnav generated by the Garmin G530. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

What about turning the avionics switch off before shutting off?

This would only be important when starting an engine. During shut down, this is not an issue as there are no voltage spikes or voltage drops. . I would also appreciate if comments are made under a clear name and written with a decent form of professional courtesy. Your comment sounds condescending. @@GuidoWarnecke english is not my native language and i have learned it by myself so professional courtesy is something i am not familiar with. By the way for me such rules sounds strange since it was just some kind of expression in comments without any official response. Anyway I am glad to get such fast answer from you, but I think that there could be spikes and drops because in my mind physically for alternator it is the same process as starting up. Does POH says that there are no need to switch the avionics off as well? Thanks, Capt. Daniil

@@zordan91 Hi Capt. Daniil, The King Air does not have an alternator, the electrical system is supplied by 2 starter/generators and the battery. Avionics may be prone to damage by excessive voltage and voltage spikes. This could happen during the connection of a badly rated GPU. During an engine starts, a damage is relatively unlikely but it can happen. During engine shut down, nothing will happen, voltage drops from 28V to 24V battery voltage when the generators (or the alternator in small piston engine aircraft) come offline. On newer aircraft equipped with glass cockpit this problem is not existent anymore as the avionics has its own power supply and battery. During engine start at least one avionics bus must be on to display the engine instruments. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido
