When Baldwin was a boy, he was playing with another boy. He got hurt and his tutor a monk rushed to see if he was okay. Baldwin said he was fine. Then the monk decided to pick him with a needle and Baldwin felt no pain. The monk started to cry as he realized Baldwin had leprosy.

@@RileyDia well one of its faults was that the movie was pretty biased on multiple parts and didn’t show both sides thinking and mistakes. As an example Just showing the crusaders as mindless monsters. And while that did indeed happen. The other side did too. I still liked the movie anyway but as someone that’s done a lot of research into history did bring the tone down a little.

On my very first playthrough, my favorite party was Vestal, Plague Doctor, Man at Arms and Leper. I played it blind at the time, so I was surprised when I completed DD1 and the heroes got the "Never Again" trait. There I decided to save my favorite party for the last DD, which I did. When my Leper dropped this line, I had no idea what was to follow. Now everytime I see this line in the wild, it always brings a tear to my eye.

Spoilers for Kingdom of Heaven below. I like how after Baldwin tells him that, Balian declines to participate in a very necessary political maneuver that includes executing Guy de Lusignan, because he doesn't want to be responsible for another man's death. Baldwin dies, his sister succeeds him as queen, Guy, her husband, is crowned king, and he proceeds to start a war with the Muslims, resulting in the deaths of thousands (at least).

They used the Templars as the bad guys probably because either they want to depict them as the bad guys to reflect the zeitgeist, using them to hook teenagers that resonate with said zeitgeist, that some guys in Ubisoft and those who fund them are connected to irl secret societies, or some combination of the three.

at age 16 King Baldwin and about 5,000 soldiers defeated Saladin (one of the greatest military generals of all time) who had an army of about 25,000 in the Battle of Montisgrad and Saladin had to escape on a donkey from the battle back to Cairo they did trade victories back and forth with saladin being victorious in the battle of Marj Ayyun and the Seige of Jacob’s Ford as well as Baldwin other victories at Battle of Belvoir Castle and Seige of Kerak although the respect for each other and admiration is a bit exaggerated in the film it is very true that Saladin sent his own physicians to attend to Baldwin (muslim physicians were renowned as being the most advance in the medical field) Baldwins condition was unfortunately too far gone and died at age 24 after being blind and unable to move for the last 2-3 years of life due to his Leprosy

Fun Fact: In Darkest Dungeon, one of the character classes is known as "the Leper," a tanky high-damage unit. However, Darkest Dungeon also has canonical default names for each character class. For example, the Crusader is Reynault, the Vestal is Junia, and the Jester is Sarmenti. The Leper is Baldwin - as in, King Baldwin IV. His backstory comic lends to this reference even further, and his design bears a striking resemblance to King Baldwin as seen in this meme and the 2005 movie. Legendary little tidbit, on the dev's part.

I think that the whole idea of a mask and veil covering the face of Baldwin is far better than just trying to use makeup, also it adds to the character, creating the image that Baldwin uses the mask so people don't feel afraid to talk to him.
