King Charles was taught a handshake from members of the West Indies cricket team, during a meeting at Buckingham Palace ahead of their first Test cricket match against England at Lord's. The King also expressed his concern for those affected by Hurricane Beryl.

One of the things I adore about His Majesty is his infinite curiosity about people and cultures other than his own. All those years ago, they tried to make him a different man; this only goes to prove that the man who had to stand patiently in his mother's shadow has risen to become someone who needs stand in no one else's shadow.

He is the first reigning monarch to have attended both a boarding school, rather than have private tutors, and to go to University (Trinity College, Cambridge); and I believe that he took his degree in anthropology, so it's not really surprising that he has an interest in people and their cultures. In many ways he's really the UK's first "modern" monarch, but one who, no doubt because of his background in anthropology, understands the importance of tradition in cultural identity.

Lovely video of our King greeting the West Indies cricket team. Can you imagine Meg spending her life as a royal and shaking hands time after time and asking people about THEIR lives? That would really burn her because all she wants to do is TALK ABOUT HERSELF ALL THE TIME. And was it in Africa (or during their disastrous Australia new Zealand tour?) that she made an official visit to a market and said she couldn't believe she wasn't being paid "for doing this"? And her visit was cut very short and she was hustled back to her car.

The more I see of King Charles the more I admire his easy way with everyone he meets. He has had 70 something years to prepare for his role, and even when dealing with cancer, he is doing it so well. As an American, I am very impressed!

Seems very relaxed and cool, not as uptight as I've seen him at these functions in the past. They said when the Queen Mother died, the Queen moved into a new phase and matured into her own as the matriarch. I think the same thing is happening here. The King is becoming the patriarch.

The main corridor of the East wing [of Buck House] seems an odd location for a drinks reception - I know that the renovations there are newly completed, so perhaps they wanted to 'show it off', or perhaps the 'rolling' programme of works has now moved on to encompass the semi-state rooms on the ground floor of the West wing, where these sort of events are usually held ?
