Edward pretty much kidnapped Wallis from the courthouse where she had to sign the divorce. She tried to sneak out back or side entrances but he had sent security to stand at all of them and they forced her into a car, strait to ship to France and kept her held up in that French estate they lived in for about a year by herself whilst he tried to not have to abdicate, etc.
