Very informative thankyou. I had seen a scan of the original "Hubert Brown" design, but had never heard of its origins.

'Disgraceful' is the right word for the Post Office's conduct regarding Hubert, the designer. I bet he didn't come from a posh or well-connected family who would have confronted the P.O. and sued the b*stards for millions for breach of copyright A VERY interesting story that I hadn't heard before, and thanks for the post (excuse the 'post' pun). I think the sideways profile is much more traditional and effective than the three-quarters design. Also of course George V (a stamp collector too) hated the original, only once printed, 3/4 'Downey Heads' design of himself, and the PO thereafter reverted to the traditional sideways profile.

The Edward VIII stamps are my least favourite pre decimal British stamps. I just don't like the simple design. The proposed Australian stamp on the other hand is quite attractive.

Yes, I'd agree. I'd never seen the proposed Australian one until I made this episode, it's much nicer.

Your good lady mentioned King Charles. If and when Charles becomes king, I hope he will not be Charles III - we executed Charles I in 1649. I would encourage him to think of another name.

Well, the old lady left us and now it is King Charles. He is 72

I don't think it is going to be quicker than it was for Edward VIII. They have a large backstock of the queens stamps to use up and they are very interested in doing a first rate job on Charles. Plus public interest on stamp design is not as great today as it was in 1936.

I suspect they'll have something ready for the coronation next year, but maybe not before that.

The first stamp was printed in your country, in 1840. That's why UK was awarded and has the privilege not to write the name of the country on the stamps but to put Monarch's picture or profile portrait, in the corner of the stamps. It won't be changed because it is the honor. Zvezdan, Serbia
