King family speaks to CBS 6 five years after losing their four daughters in the Schoharie Limo Crash

Five years ago, 20 people lost their lives as a stretch limousine driving 17 friends to a birthday party crashed into a ditch.
All 17 passengers, the driver and two bystanders were killed in the crash.
It's a story we've told countless times leading up to the trial and conviction of Prestige Limo Company operator Nauman Hussain earlier this year, and it's a story that's not over.
Hussain is appealing the guilty verdict for criminally negligent homicide, and some families are still seeking financial compensation from the Mavis Discount Tire shop that performed work on that same limousine.
For five years now, Linda and Tom King have been putting one foot in front of the other, turning to their faith, family and friends to go on without their four daughters they lost in the crash.
We sat down with the incredibly strong couple to talk about then and now. They told us when the accident happened, they never thought they would make it without their daughters.
You can find more of our coverage on the Schoharie Limo crash at cbs6albany.com.

*is. Trust me, the pain of the death of one child-let alone all of your children-does not enter the past tense at any time. It’s closer to waves crashing onto the beach and the tide, coming and going. It just changes you to your very core.

🎯Absolute fact Kim, there is no other way to keep breathing~ much lesss functioning in this life. I lost my 22 yr old son Isaac in August of 2010, & the world changed forever that day. I truly understand your momma's heart & all that comes with it...God was with me the entire way, though it took some time before I could actually feel Him. The waves of grief are not as often these days, but there really is no end to it here~ not until we go home. I've come to accept this, & continue to find my way forward. People try to help by saying we will find a "new normal", that we must find one~except nothing can feel normal. The peace of God, His sovreignty over all, is the only thing there is~ & it's everything. I'm grateful for that truth, & so grateful to know Him...7 that you clearly do as well. ~ Samantha in AZ

I was a chauffeur/limo driver for 20 years. My greatest moment was the night I miraculously avoided a T-bone accident with a limo full of women out partying. They couldn't believe we missed the crash as they saw the car coming into the window. Oh, how I wish this family could have had that outcome. I am so very sorry for your HORRIFIC loss. Losing our granddaughter and SIL in an accident was overwhelming. I feel the need to talk about them. My husband does not. I had to keep going for my daughter and her children. I went to grief therapy and support, reached out to my friends etc. without outside support I would not have made it. Everyone handles grief differently. Some are in shock for years, others rely on faith, others just give up. The mother appears very strong and probably was strong before. But inside there is deep, deep pain. Sharing her beautiful daughter’s lives with others is a comfort to her, that they mattered and will matter forever. I admire her strength but also just want to hold her and let her cry it out at times. That is one thing that is difficult. Being totally vulnerable to anyone else.

In my ex husbands family his oldest sister lost one grown child in a house fire, a few years later her second daughter was killed when an 18 wheeler’s brakes failed, and he went through the sign and shoved her car into a ditch landing on top of it, She had a toddler at home and a baby on the way. A few years later, his second sister lost her son when the pickup he was riding in went over a hill not anticipating a stalled truck at the bottom, and their pickup went under it, killing him instantly but letting his little boy survive. Many years later my own son was killed by a hit and run driver, tomorrow will be 12 years. When I went back to work a very sweet lady came over to me to see how I was doing, telling me she knows how I feel, she lost her daughter and three grandchildren in a house fire on Christmas eve. There are many, many grieving parents and siblings walking among us. They are moving on with their lives because they may have other children or family that need them. They will never forget, there will always be grief in their hearts, it will never go away. P.S. My adult son was diagnosed with leukemia just over a year ago, since the diagnosis he has been hospitalized so many times I’ve lost count, the last one being last week. He’s a really good person, was born an old soul, he’s a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, the thought that I could lose him too is almost too devastating to even think about. Makes me treasure him and his older sister even more.

It's coming up on 4 years since I lost my son. I can just be driving down the road when I see something that reminds me of him and the tears just flow. I cannot even begin to fathom the pain your family has had to go through. Your daughters, though young, left lasting memories for you and their many friends and co--workers. God bless you both, one day you will all be united again in the arms of Jesus.

I can not begin to fathom your grief. Not only for the loss of your four beautiful daughters, but the friends who would've hugged you if they were still here and the grandbabies that you never got to meet and snuggle. All I could possibly say to you both, is that your incredible strength and resolve at seeing justice prevailed for your girls and the beautiful way you speak of them and tell their stories is the most beautiful tribute to them. I can tell you that they are still with you, as you already know. And I believe that they are beyond proud of you both for your strength and class at the way you've chosen to honor them and speak of them and the tragedy that took them from you. You are remarkable people of faith. My heart truly goes out to you both as well as your grandchildren and the rest of your family. You're amazing. 😇😇😇😇🩷🩷🩷🩷

They seem to be dong tremendously well. That's not to say their loss was not tragic, and that they don't still grieve the loss of their daughters in personally profound ways, but I think how we deal with grief and loss determines our health, our quality of life, and our ability to regain feel joy in our lives. Many would have collapsed under the weight of such grief, but where does that get you? How does that help anything or anyone. In many ways, you are forfeiting any hope of truly living. Fortunately, they both seem to grieve similarly, which makes all the difference. They can't bring their daughters back, but they can appreciate the years they shared, and continue to love them through memories and stories, along with the love others felt for their daughters. I find their ability to keep moving forward so incredible, and so inspirational! They still have life to enjoy, and they've found a way to do that. I hope I would have 1/2 that courage and strength in whatever tragic moments may come my way before I'm gone. All the best to both of them!
