I was born in Norway and came to the states in the late 50s when I was 9 with my parents. Because of my work and my heritage, I had the incredible experience of greeting the King and Queen in Berkeley when they visited the Bay Area in the mid 90s. I sat at their table for lunch, and my 12 year old daughter presented the Queen with flowers. They were both so amazingly gracious during the entire day. A memory I will never forget. I thought they might invite me for a stay on my next trip to Norway, maybe next time.

yes if you were not talking to Olav V the guy's father famously decided to go on a ski trip on a train in 1973 to later claim he had "4 million bodyguards" (the approximate population of Norway at the time) when someone asked him why he did not have bodyguards and was dressed in a common ski suit and skis for his trip.

Very interesting to see how other countries handle their heads of state, let alone a king, which is more and more of a rare thing these days. The countries that still keep their royalty around are keeping a very special part of their heritage, IMO, and it also shows a love (or lack of) that a country can have for ruling families that have done them well. Long live the people of Norway, and by default, their royal family! Thanks for showing us this!

I am actually not a royalist in princippal. If we would have a new country, I would have said make it a republic. But I also love history, and with our 1100 year of history, it would be a real shame to loose the monarchy. Where are you from? And yes, State theory can be quite interesting.

@@ruralor I'm a royalist tough ... I do respect others view ofcourse. The thing I would say is that as a King he is our top leader even that it is more a cermonial one these days. But what is good about him is that our King is not a political leader, he is everyones leader no matter what political party you belong to, he don't judge you for your political view. A president (wich we do have one ... Stortingspresidenten) is elected by the parties... he do not hold the support from not even half the population !!! he is one to lead us ? no... I am a conservative ... I would never accept a president from like ... the communist party Red ... And even if it is highly unlikely ... I would say no.

As an American who is a traditionalist, I LOVE these kinds of ceremonies. In particular the formal dress. We used to have things like that here, but sadly my country has become very slovenly, especially over the last 25 years or so. I do love the fact that the King is riding in a 1960's American Lincoln Continental convertible! Its even more amazing to me that he rides in an open car. Our government leaders have not been permitted to do that since the 1963 killing of President Kennedy. That Lincoln sure is beautiful and proof that leaders do not need a new vehicle every 4 or 8 years at a cost to the taxpayers of 1 million dollars like here in the States. I wonder who was riding in the Audi limousine? I guess it must have been the Prince.
@ruralor
@ruralor 2 жыл бұрын
The first cars we saw brought the King's and the Crown Prince's aide-de-camp staff. They sort of serve as the King's personal secretaries, arranging practical things related to his appointments. There are three of them, one for each branch of the military. Army, navy and airforce. Then comes the Audi limousine. It brings the Crown Prince in the back seat, and the 'court master' (the chief of staff at the royal palace) in the middle seat. Last comes the King and Queen in the 1966 Lincoln, I think. If you was surprised that they can drive in an open car, then I think you should take a look at this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/atF5mZd3u9qRgac.html I don't think there are many places in the world where this could've happened. The Head of State walking down the main street in the capital.
@retroguy9494
@retroguy9494 2 жыл бұрын
@@ruralor Thank you for your reply. My thoughts were correct in that it was the Prince in the Audi. Here in the States, we do things a bit different. The president has a chief of staff and a personal secretary who arrange his practical things and appointments. The representatives of the branches of the military of which you speak serve on what WE call the "joint chiefs of staff." Their role, regarding the president, is to advise him on military matters since our president is also the commander in chief of all the branches of the military. That WAS a very nice walk. The Queen sure looks like a very classy lady. I believe you are correct. Very few countries could do such a walk. I know Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain used to go among the people like this until her age has now slowed her down considerably. Here in the States, the only time you will see something like this is on inauguration day when the president will sometimes step out of his armored bullet proof limousine and walk part way from the Capitol to the White House after the swearing in ceremony. However, its only for a VERY short time and there is so much security around! They are even on the rooftops of buildings along the route. Its actually very carefully staged for safety purposes.

The speach is very political, it is all about the goals of the government and the country for the next year. The speach is written by the government, so therefore it is the prime minister who hands the speach over to the king. The king then reads it, and delivers the documents over to the president off the parliament. I cut out all the talking, so that is maybe why it can be abit confusing. If you watch my other video, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8h2Z7po3rfIj58.html, you can see the whole thing.

How do they get away with it? Their 'wages' (the royal appanache) is set by the Parliament. If you think they earn too much, you can vote for a party that want to reduce it. This is a democratic process. I agree that in for example the UK, it is insane how much money they waste on the monarchy. Here in Norway however, the monarchy is relatively cheap. Probably cheaper than many presidents. They often wear the same dresses. The diamonds are inherrited from generation to generation. The royal castle, the king's summer estate as well as the royal yacht are all owned by the State, not by the king. There are no horses either, wich I honestly think is abit sad. We have a few royal carriges, but no horses to pull them. The horses were sold off by the Germans who occupied the castle during WWII. After that the Parliament never deemed it necessary.
