When it comes to musicals, it's hard to find someone as big and genuine as Julie Andrews. There have been many talented artists, but few really understand what a musical is and how it should be sung. It is not opera and it's not pop music. Julie had the perfect technique to sound real, emotional and place her voice where it had to be at the right time. With natural vibrato, and not learned or exacerbated as some used to.

Wonderful. Wonderful. I bought the album on CD about 25 years ago, and have thoroughly enjoyed listening to it over all of those years. To be able to watch this video about the recording of the album demonstrates the sheer mastery of the arrangers, musicians, singers and actors who have translated the original Rodgers and Hammerstein musical into a more contemporary version. My thanks and congratulations to all involved. This is well and truly a modern classic.

Look at her eyes at 1:36 😍..this character is such a perfect fit for Julie.. she herself tends to whistle when she is nervous 2:34...my feet just immediately start tapping when I hear her singing "Getting to know you" also look at how happy she is and enjoying it so much 7:49 - 8:22 and I just melt when she starts singing "When I think of Tom" 21:36 oh that Voice...the whole recording especially Julie's part is so perfect that I was actually playing her recorded version while watching the movie and it was in perfect sync...do I need to say anything about "Shall we Dance"....how involved she is in the recording that she gets teary at the end...it must be heaven to be in the studio with Julie and a 96 piece orchestra...i have to agree with Hammerstein's grandson that "R&H made their musicals 10 years too early for the perfect woman"🙌

You should have been at the Hollywood Bowl the night they all re-did this CD, shortly after it was recorded. Maestro Mauceri talked us all in the audience through some sing along parts.....when "Getting to Know You" was about to start, John had everyone go "Aaahh" along with the kids on stage. Hard to forget that. I arrived a bit late, just as Peabo B. was singing "We Kiss in the Shadows....etc." That seems like yesterday, yet, such a long time ago. More recent in L.A. was about 15 yrs. ago, seeing Lea S. play the lead in Flower Drum Song. After the show, when she exited the stage door, she was glommed onto by a bunch of Filipino kids who wanted their picture taken w/ her, and her autograph. One of the cast members told me that she's a big star in the Phillipines.

I thought I was going to meet Ms. Andrews when she was doing the movie "Hawaii," on location. Decades later, I met her in Los Angeles. Yes, she was and is fantastic. It's great to see these retro BTS documentaries...now preserved for posterity on the internet. History should be revered and cherished, the good and the bad and not revised for political purposes. It's how we got here. From the solid background of the past, is how we can explore other expressions.

@@bradleyscarton3931I must disagree. In 1992, when this was recorded, she was 57 years old. The character was supposed to be a young widow. 57 would have been pushing it quite a bit. On a recording, it’s one thing, but onstage it would have been another. She was old enough to be Louis’ grandmother. (I’m in my 60s so I’m not being ageist, it’s just a fact.) I know she did Victor/Victoria in the mid-90s, but she was having throat issues (the motivation for the ill-fated surgery) and was exhausted.

Reason why Gertrude owned the musical…? Appearing in Broadway musical “Lady in the Dark” - Hollywood cast Ginger Rogers for the film version.. Gertrude “owned” the musical property…guaranteeing she would star in the film version..of “King & I”… BUT…developing cancer..she literally died performing the roll on Broadway…she was buried in the Golden-satin “shall we dance” satin ball gown… 20th Century Fox bought the Broadway musical for filming from the Gertrude Lawrence Estate … casting the roll with an actress with no singing talent - dub with Marni Nixon singing the musicals vocals…

Yes....I remember when Miles Kreuger of The Institute for the American Musical" taught a class on the history of the American Musical at UCLA Extension in the mid 1980s: he mentioned that Gertrude was criticized by producers for poor performances in King and I; but none of them knew she was dying of cancer at the time. Kind of poignant that Yul Brynner eventually died of cancer, too; he performed his final perfs. of it while very sick w/ it.....the result of a long smoking cigarette life.

@@timmellin2815 Mary Martin’s friendship & relationship with both Rogers’ & Hammerstein’s (family) wives was remarkable - since they respected her advice upon observation in production casting and/or professional recommendation. What a dynamic talent. Mary Martin spent a lot of time-off, at her residential Inca in Brazil. Being visited, being offered theatrical properties by composers-lyricists. This was the case with composer Claibe Richardson’s & his lyricist, Kenward Elmslie’s “The Grass Harp.” Upon listening to the team’s auditioning the story & music … Mary wanted the team to reconstruct the Truman Capote book - in order to consolidate two roles into one - musical opportunity - since she wanted to sing the major musical numbers…which neither Claibe nor Kenward were willing to concede… deflated - returning to NY City of Manhattan… that is how Barbara Cooke was approached…!

Does anyone know if this was originally dubbed by Marni Nixon?

As is well-known, Marni Nixon dubbed the singing for Deborah Kerr in the movie version of the King and I. They worked closely together to get the transition from speech to song to be as seamless as possible. The original Anna in the stage version was Gertrude Lawrence (who was later played by Julie in the movie Star!).

After Gertrude Lawrence’s disappointment in her Broadway musical “Lady in the Dark” starring role - the musical was purchased by Paramount Pictures for Ginger Rogers …. Rogers wanted a film role away from her collaboration with Fred Astaire. GertrudeLawrence pursued buying the theatrical rights for the book “Anna and the King of Siam.” Rogers & Hammerstein had independently toyed with turning the book into a musical - exasperated - they gave up. Lawrence hired Cole Porter…he gave up…! Lawrence hired Irving Berlin…he gave up…! Having lunch with Hammerstein’s wife Dorothy - complains about putting a musical team package together - Dorothy, of course didn’t know Rogers & her husband had tried to develop the book. Dorthy said, “why don’t you ask Dick and Oscar..?” …and that…is how… “The King and I” …fell, again, into their laps…!

@tashmivyas4065: Hammerstein’s grandson is wrong-and you too-with the comment that they wrote their musicals 10 years early for the ‘perfect woman’. Neither THE KING AND I or THE SOUND OF MUSIC would have seen the light of day on the stage without respectfully Gertrude Lawrence and Mary Martin. Their talent, star wattage and indirect legal ownership by option and contract paved the way for the creation of the musicals. Whatever deficiencies they had were outweighed by what they contributed. There is a charm and interpretation that Lawrence and Martin brought that will never be replaced and both musical roles are better for their dramatic intuition than a typical soprano would have created. Face it, Julie Andrews and any other actress is standing on the shoulders of Lawrence and Martin. That you want to believe Julie Andrews is the ideal is your business, though wrong. That Hammerstein’s grandson believes it only means he does not understand both the creative and business process that his grandfather did nor would he be able to take advantage of what Gertrude Lawrence and Mary brought personally and legally to get the projects created. Sad, very sad.

Any relation to the dancer / photographer / Holly Cruikshank Ireland ? (She was in the Fosse production.) Very unusual name. I remember wondering who the tall dancer was, so I paid attention when, after the show, they introduced all the dancers. I thought...."Cruickshank.....there's an unusual name I'll never forget."

@@timmellin2815 Afraid not, Tim. It's not an especially unusual name in Scotland but 'Holly' is uncommon.
