Isabel Oakeshott calls out the "bitter irony" of Rishi Sunak proposing national service, but failing to stay for the 80th anniversary event of D-Day.
"Tory activists are absolutely apoplectic about this! It will prove to be the single most serious error of the campaign."
Rishi Sunak has apologised after skipping a major international ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day in order to carry out a General Election TV interview.
The Prime Minister said “it was a mistake” not to stay in France for the international event after he had attended the earlier British ceremony in Normandy.
Mr Sunak has come under intense criticism after it emerged he missed the event with fellow world leaders to head back to the UK for an ITV interview.

Those who fought in WW2 did not have the option of going home early. My father paused his university studies and his engagement and marriage to join the RAF. He did not see his parents for over three years; this was the NORM for those young men and women. The behaviour of the PM was truly outrageous and thoughtless.

He wasn't alone. My Dad was Merchant Navy and served from day one to the end. He was sunk twice. First in a troopship off North Africa, second in a tanker in the Atlantic. Most of his service was in tankers hauling aviation fuel. He married my Mum in November 1944 when he was on leave after being involved in the Invasion. He would say today that Sunak is typical of most politicians who don't give a stuff about the average man in the street.

As you know Remembrance Day is the bigger anniversary in London, and D-Day is traditionally celebrated on site in Normandy.
