I wouldn't say a small role, but an absolutely understated one, as are many of Tolkien's non-Fellowship characters. But the dichotomy between Théoden and Denethor is one of the most powerful themes in the book. Two men, both born from noble houses, each experiencing parallel moments in their lives, and yet the manner in which each man chooses to react to tragedy and hardship could not be more different. The movie does a pretty good job showing the dichotomy, but I think the books do it even better. But Bernard did a marvelous job bringing Théoden to life.

It's almost impossoble to overstate just how incredible Bernard Hill's performance was as Theoden. He so perfectly portrayed a king desperate to bring honor to his forefathers. A man who did his duty to the end despite facing seemingly insurmountable odds. BH understood just how to walk the line between a man that's filled with self doubt and inadequacy, yet consumed by need to prove himself worthy as a leader.

In a fantasy world Theoden was one of the more relatable characters. He had self doubt, he was mourning his son. He showed basic humanity and decency. This was helped by the underrated but great Bernard Hill

His delivery of the line "no parent should have to bury their child" is bone-chilling. He embodies grief in a few simple sentences. He embodied the grief, the doubt, the bravery, and the wisdom learned from war. He quite simply stole every scene he was in. Amazing performer.

Aw man, that hits hard. I'm in tears. Bernard Hill's portrayal of Theoden always resonated with me. The only scene that always gets me goosebumps is the charge of the Rohirrim at the Pelenor Fields.

Just a few seconds but one of my favourite scenes in the movies: King Théoden standing before Meduseld as preparations are made to go out to war and he takes one last look at his kingdom's banner.: "So it is before the walls of Minas Tirith, the doom of our time will be decided."

Very nice video, nice summary of his best scenes, epic, touching, emotional, that's how a video should be and a successful tribute and that's how it turned out. Nooooo I just got him to sign my king theoden helm and I got upset because he kinda wrote way too much and ran out of room and I don't even know what half of it says but I could tell he was getting older so I was just grateful he signed it anyway.. but I'm even more grateful now and he was super nice. Another shining example of how the LOTR was the epitome of good cinema. As a kid you think why didn’t king Theoden just outright fight then when you get older you realize BH performance of the character was so human when having to weigh responsibility and glory.

I remember watching Two towers in the Theaters back when it came out. And later when a friend of mine and I were Binge watching all three in Extended editions when Extended Return of the King came out.. Rest well Bernard Hill you spear have shattered and your Shield remain strong. You will be remembered!
