King Tide: Pacific Ocean rolls into Lincoln City

The Pacific Ocean, backed by the King Tide, put on a show for those in Lincoln City Monday, throwing its raw energy at seawalls up and down the coastal town.
One woman who is a Lincoln City resident, felt how cold the sea can be around 10:40 a.m. as she took the brunt of a wave that made it up and over a Nelscott Beach seawall.
"Not quite what I expected," she said as her family tended to her. The woman was undeterred from the ordeal and continued to watch the ocean deliver hits, which was described by watchers as soapy, milky and frothy.
Some onlookers had strategies, such as standing on the concrete tables to avoid getting wet, but even that seemed like a bad idea as the crashing waves got closer to them.
The beach was completely overtaken by the waves, at times, as the King Tide, brought on by an alignment of the Earth, moon and sun, was at its greatest tidal effect.
While it is considered fun by those who enjoy the thrilling nature display, it is dangerous and people should be aware of sneaker waves and rolling logs. The general rule is to not go near the beach on days like this.
According to those watching the King Tide Monday, the waves were not nearly as large as January of this year, when concrete benches were moved and ocean made it onto Anchor Avenue.
Still, many felt glad they came out to see the power of mother nature and could be seen taking photos, videos and making sure their children stayed well back from the edge.

To my surprise, Phaeocystis happened to be the cause of the foam on the sea shore. The species involved is Phaeocystis pouchetti, it belongs to the Haptophyta, a group of small single-celled algae. Despite their small size, Haptophytes play an important part in marine ecology since many species can be found in astronomical numbers

I totally agree. One summer in August 95 took almost entire month to explore the Oregon Coast and Portland. Went from Astoria to Brookings and took my time. Almost two weeks and then ended up at Crater Lake. Great time.

I saw those tides at Haceta Head Lighthouse beach and they were crazy! There was no beach! (That foam and backwash would have been fun to see though. And combined with big waves in this video. So cool!)

King tides seem to be coming atleast yearly, but the Oregon coast is notoriously unpredictable. Lots of sneaker waves and rip currents.

These r the tides we have here on the west coast, not the ripples u have on the east coast...course the temp of the ocean is about 50 degree in the winter and around 60-65 in the summer
