Last summer, me and my girlfriend had been on a trip through the Czech Republic and I had finished KCD, so, while going back to Prague from my grandparents house, we decided to get down from the highway and stop at all the iconic places. I experienced a wonderful feeling, while going through the different forests, and driving on the country roads (taking me home). I knew exactly where I was, what crossing was down the road just after the next hill, even though I never been to the place before, except for KCD.

I'm glad you did but honestly, the whole Europe is precisely that. Anywhere you go there, you'll find a hamlet, a village, a city, a land, a region, a province, a small state or a big one which has a tremendous source of history to be learned then discovered on-site. This is what Europe is : a paradise for historian aficionados. And you get even luckier when the common heritage has survived to ages, wars or this stupid fashion from late XIXth, early XXth that made a lot of country "modernise" their buildings by demolishing them in order to build new ones because the old heritage was considered as old-fashioned and ungainly.

Also big points for being an rpg that is not fantasy yet again.
@RifleEyez
@RifleEyez 3 жыл бұрын
@@waltdistel716 I feel exactly the same, Witcher didn't grab me either. But KC:D is the most immersive game I've ever played BECAUSE it's so real - no fantasy, no monsters, no spells, real locations, real people, real history - and you're not some superman chosen one who is just overpowered - there's beauty in the mundane. Even the 'worse' mission for most people is one of the most unique and immersive experiences I've ever had in a game and I couldn't believe they did it (becoming a monk). Ultimately Kingdom Come is so unique because it's an extremely well made game, but a game that a big AAA studio wouldn't have made, and I mean that as the best possible compliment. They would have 'spiced it up', held your hand more, gone for more "crazy" missions, made everything more sterile and boring, made the combat just hack and slash, made archery easy, removed features rather than facing players breaking them (what other game can you repeatedly rob merchants for their gear and money at night?). Even the UI/map is beautiful and different. Talking about it now makes me want to start my 3rd playthrough. 2kliksphilip put it another way - that it's like developers from games 20 years ago - like Bethesda & Morrowwind as an example - were given these updated tools to make something. In other words it feels completely different to generic AAA RPG games - but in a good way. EDIT: the next Kingdom Come is my most anticipated game ever

I know it's different but as Parisian, I did enjoy a lot Assassin's Creed Unity which takes place in Paris during the French revolutionary era. The streets and scales are not respected but the restitution of buildings is very accurate. There is not only KDC that provides that kind of experience. Some others games offer this possibility but it is true that there is NO full realistic (except the potions) medieval games as good as KDC.

Fun Fact: The reason some of the areas from KDC seem bigger and more grand is due to them actually being bigger than they were in real life. In Shadiversity's video going through the historical accuracy of the buildings in KDC, he had made a comment about it, and Warhorse replied. They stated that they had to make all the buildings and certain areas a bit bigger than real life, as the NPC navmesh was otherwise going to be a problem (not enough room for NPC's to properly navigate without creating odd glitches and bugs). Edit: Paragraph spacing. (KZfaq must you always double-space?)

@@TheGreatGodPan I'm not so sure the actual map-size itself is bigger than real life. Just the buildings, pathways, and areas with lots of NPC traffic. It would still be likely that they scaled down the actual world size in order to stay within fit technical limitations.

"It's an opportunity to learn about the past". Ain't that the truth. About a year ago, before I bought KCD, I knew very little of the history of my own country (Wales). KCD inspired me to learn more, especially around the same time period in which KCD is set. At that time, Owain Glyndwr was in full swing in his uprising against Henry IV. I've since learned that medieval Welsh history is absolutely fascinating stuff and I would love to see a KCD-type game based around something in that setting.

@G G The area depicted in the game is fairly backwards and unimportant. There are castles in Czech Rep in every town and 2-3 historical buildings in pretty much every village, it's an immense expense. A lot of those castles were used for their original purpose (defence, military barracks) well until the late 18th century and a lot of them were deliberately ruined by whoever managed to conquer them. A castle in a village (a village, not a town) I've been born and raised was destroyed by enemies during Napoleonic wars and then again shortly afterwards. Another castle (again near a village, not a town) is about 15km away, in very good condition and visited by tourists. But it was impossible to save both. I love this stuff. When I was first playing KCD I became utterly fascinated by the places and the history. So much so that I stalked the Czech Republic on Google Earth. As a former Stockholm tour guide, I get really, really into the history and places in these sorts of games, and I'm currently working on a video with a similar sort of message. I really wish more game devs would do this. I would argue that the early Assassin's Creed games did this very well, but no-one does it quite like Warhorse did it.

My family got a small cottage near the river (next to a mill!) so this game tool me back to my childhood and bring some memories. Some interest to mention: 2:46 no you cannor enter the old castle :( 3:56 two interesting things on real photo: the white building on the right, right behind the black car is a taver called “U Jindřicha” which is Henry in English - best tavern in Ratay! Building in the middel, with small tower on the roof, look at the chimney on lefr of the tower, you will see a small thing on the top of the chimney - thas is a head of nun made od stone. The legends says she was burried in the chimney alive with only her head kept outside and which turned to stone after some time later. (Better photo on 4:23 - the castle was teared down and a building on the real photo was build). Neuhof is today the right end of the Ratay village - there are no stables anymore, only cattle farm. The suroundings around Ledecz are the most accurate I have ever seen. We were biking all around Ratay, Talmberk, mostly Sasau (it is more far away in real life) so when I was playing, I barely opened the map to find some place.

I love how Kingdom Come looks. I live in Poland which is close geographically to Czech. I've seen images like this my whole life because in my town there is a castle where lived princes. Landscapes are identical. It's kurwa just feels like home. Only this game, Witcher and Stalker made me feel like this. They feel familiar and fresh at the same time. Only Slavs can identify with them at deepest level. I happy that games like this got a lot of attencion on west recently and I hope more will be created.

We have over 460 castles, not counting chapels, churches and places of pilgrimage, of which there are countless in the Czech Republic. In a history full of wars and minor disputes, much has been lost, but historians and various foundations are trying to fix everything or what can be preserved. But it is not possible to such an extent.

Honestly as a french I would fancy something like this during the 100 years war or during the Albigenses crusade ! Even during small events or unknown periods in medieval ages ! Because everywhere is a place to learn about and so much interesting things that could become the perfect background for an historical game !

The fact that Warhorse decided to make the game in such a small, rather random, part of Bohemia is a bold choice that only deserves praise.
