Kingdom Hearts 1 Needs A Remake?

Apparently, Kingdom Hearts 1 needs a remake now. It has already had 2 remasters and several re-releases, but it appears that some people believe this game needs to be redone from the ground up. Alex and I wanted to get into this, as we believe that it would be better to move on and see the future of Sora, Riku, Kairi, Aqua and the rest. The series has entered new territory with Yozora and Verum Rex and Melody of Memory just came out recently. Does this series really need to retread the same ground it's been through? #kingdomhearts #playstation #jrpg

With some of the handheld games like CoM, 358 Days and Re:Coded revisiting worlds from KH1, you might as well say it's been remade several times. I'd rather see remakes of 358 Days and Re: Coded get remade from the ground up so they can improve on their existing mechanics, and they won't be limited by inferior hardware. Giving KH1 the Kiwami treatment just feels wrong IMO

I would LOVE a Coded remake. That was my first KH game so I have a lot of nostalgia for it. I was pretty sad to see it just made into a movie for TSSF.

I'm very torn on it because we keep getting re-releases and tbh in some ways the world design of 1 is different than others with intricate details and secrets.

I worry that they'd simplify the worlds. Traverse town has so much hidden stuff compared to the worlds in something like KH 3.

This question is asked all the time on the main KH subreddit. 9 times out of 10 the fans there think the games hold up extremely well and I would agree. A lot of us would like to advance the story into a new arc. And rather the teams focus on that. If they want to remake any games they could remake the handheld games like days or recoded.

Personally, I feel like the only games that really deserve remakes are the handhelds (358/2 Days, Coded, and MAYBE even to a lesser extent Birth By Sleep) The original KH is a game that I personally feel like has aged well and we already got a final mix remaster, so for me, I’m not sure what could be done with it. Another game that I personally feel like fits this category is Persona 4. Sure it’s another game that’s older, but older game doesn’t always mean it needs a modern remake.

I would like a remake, but ONLY if a team separate from whoever is working on the next installments made it. I don't want anymore of a wait. I'm also afraid that a remake would lose some of the quirky charm. The worlds are pretty awful in the first game as far as navigating them, but they do all have surprises and unique things that later games lost or toned down. I'd buy it and play it, either way...I've bought the entire series as available on PS2, GBA, DS, PSP, 3DS, PS3, PS4 (both physical and digital) and now Steam. So they'd get my money.

Honestly I don't think KH1 needs a remake. Yes it has aged compared to later entries in the series but, it is still playable. What I do think deserves a remake in 358/2 Days and Re:Coded since they're stuck on handheld devices and the HD collections only made them into movies.
