I think Mae is from the old world and she came from a bunker filled with hibernation pods. Notice how Proximus says we must destroy her kind. I don’t think he is referring to all humans, but the intelligent ones. Most notably, the ones in the bunker most likely in the pods.. also notice how Mae is the only one wearing old world clothing while the other humans are in loin cloths. My theory is either hibernation pods or just humans living in an underground bunker similar to the vaults in Fallout or the bunkers in Silo.

That makes sense and it doesn't break canon with the previous films that established a mutation in the virus that is turning humans feral and unable to speak. That is the only thing that can possibly make sense. Also she dresses differently than the animal skins everyone else is wearing.

Clearly when the world went into collapse, a group of scientists went underground to salvage technology and history, thus preventing themselves from contracting the virus (an actual government order should America get nuked or face such collapse, plus they wear hazmat suits when interacting to the outside. This is how they retained everything that makes us human! Mae was either sent or escaped (alongside Macy’s character that had the same abilities) as either an infected or immune to the virus and grab the data disk so worldwide communication could be established once more. These new films are using what the original films did…but in a far better way! I doubt we will see time travel and mutant humans worshipping a bomb this time around 🤦🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️
