I was competing at the state level in both track and field, and hockey. I was pretty fit, but not fit enough for AFL. I had no problem playing rugby codes, I just don't have the ability to run a half marathon every match and remain injury free. The people who play this sport are made different from the rest of us. I'm saying that as someone who went on to have an ADF career, and professional soldiers are pretty fit too (in Australia).

The field is huge, that can vary in width between 110 and 155 meters (120 and 170 yards) and in length between 135 and 185 meters (145 and 200 yards). This is why there are so many players and also why they have to be supremely fit.

Nice reaction, mate. 👍 Australian Rules was created in the 1850s. While it seems like a combination of other sports, it pretty much officially predates them. FYI, there's an American playing in the AFL, named Mason Cox. There's a great video about his story called 'Don't Believe in Never' on KZfaq. There was also a story on the American version of 60 Minutes (and a shorter vid as extra content on KZfaq) about him. We could watch the 60 Minutes story for a while on the website, but it's been geoblocked now for those of us who are kangaroo-adjacent. Vice has a fantastic vid about the rivalry between Collingwood v Carlton on KZfaq. It gives a good background to the passion for the game. There's also a whole bunch of best marks (catches) videos showing those leaps onto other players' shoulders. They barely scratched the surface of the spectacular marks in the intro vid. There's plenty of big hit vids as well. Cheers!

Older than Rugby? Where did the oval shaped ball come from? The initial rules for Australian Football were developed by a small group of men; one of whom was Tom Wills who was Captain of Football at Rugby School. Still think Australian Football predates Rugby. Google it. P.S. Wills was a fan of Gaelic Football. He saw a game in Liverpool and was so impressed he wrote a letter to his father about it. AFL still older??

Players wear a mouth guard and a jockstrap.... and some of the tightest shorts around. They used to have baggy ones but they would often get ripped off during a match requiring a runner (a member of the clubs staff who will run out to the players on the field and give them water during the game, instructions from the coach or other messages - they are not allowed to interfere with the game, talk to other players etc.) to come out with a towel and a spare pair of shorts. All hits must be between the shoulders and the knees. No tripping No hits to the head. No punching to the body or fighting. Was registered in the mid 1800's and is the oldest recognised, organised game and predates American football, rugby and the English Football league. Some teams have been going for over 150 years - like my beloved Magpies (Collingwood). Was originally devised to keep cricketers fit over the winter. The ground is twice as long as an American football field. The field umpires (there are three on the ground plus one at each goal) can run twenty miles - or a marathon each game. There are 18 players on the ground plus four which can be substituted in to rest players, replace injured players etc. If you end up with five injured players, then tough and you have to play one man short. Players can be reported on the field or afterwards (the games is watched by a panel of umpires to pick up any behind the play incidents) and are required to face a tribunal usually on the Tuesday after the weekend. Players can have a report dismissed or upheld. If it is upheld, they can be fined or banned from playing for anything from 1 week to an entire year. One player punched an umpire and was banned for the rest of the season. The biggest award in Footy is the Brownlow Medal given to the Best and Fairest player over the year and is voted on by the umpires at the game. They are given 1,2 or 3 votes and the votes are locked up until the night when they are all counted the week before the Grand FInal. If you have been banned for a week or fined during the season, you are automatically unable to win the medal and there have been cases of players getting rubbed out (as it is known!) in the last few weeks of the season and losing the medal.

I’m a rugby league fan but I’ve been to an AFL game so I can appreciate that AFL is better in real life than on a TV screen. So much of the action is above head level that the spectators can follow better at the ground than waiting for a camera to link where the ball in the air is going. So large crowds are logical. On the other hand, rugby league (NRL) and rugby union (Rugby or Union) are great on TV as the camera can zoom in on close contact ball handling, players out of position and grounding the ball for a try (touchdown) which must have hand+ball+ground all connected to be valid. Replays are really helpful for these.

You mentioned throwing the ball 5 seconds after they said you cannot throw the ball. You must've missed that. The ball can be punched, not like volleyball cos you have to hold it in one hand to punch it. Volleyball you throw it up then punch it, that's actually illegal in footy. And yes 18 players per team, plus 4 on the bench. 36 on the field!

Both rugby codes and NFL are more violent, but as far as ALL-ROUND athleticism is concerned, Australian Football leaves them both in the shade. For example, the average AFL midfielder runs 15-17kms (10-12 miles) per game, WHILST being bumped, scragged, tackled, thrown to the ground and jumped on. Watch: the top 50 AFL marks of all time, the top 50 AFL goals of all time, and highlights of the 2018 Grand Final.

So can you explain this to me Rod? If AFL leaves league and union in the shade athlete wise why is Rugby League the only sport of the 3 that the other 2 codes have openly poached high profile players from?… seems to me logically, youre mistaken. League has the best athletes. why else would league players get paid millions to switch codes with barely any background in the other sports? And yet it’s never happened the other way. NOT EVEN ONCE. *crickets chirping* ….nice try Mexican

@johnsy1eleven Marketing purposes. Duh. Remember where Hunt and Folau played, and that answers your question. That just goes to show you who has the money, doesn't it, if they can poach two of the biggest NRL players at that time to switch. Rugby League is a dying sport in Australia, unfortunately. The NRL can never get out of its own way, to the point that they have to go over to Vegas to get attention. The attendances continue to be shit, and they can't promote the sport west of the Great Dividing Range. They pulled the plug on Adelaide after 2 years... 2 years! Face facts. If the hotbeds weren't Sydney and Brisbane, Rugby League would've died decades ago. And that didn't save Union, weirdly enough. They continue to have to poach players from the Pacific Islands to get anyone to play it.

@@johnsy1eleven you’re argument is so dumb on so many levels. Neither player got any where near the proper condition to be AFL players, they were just gimmicks to promote the game in league territory. Sure a few leagues backs are great athletes but they aren’t anywhere near the same condition as afl athletes and don’t have any where near the same variety of skill.

The ground is huge , almost twice as long as an NFL pitch . Yes there are 36 players total running around out there because of the size of the ground , which is a cricket ground , they all fit on there. This game came before almost all other games and was codified in 1858 , so all those other games use elements of Australian football , not the other way round. Its a continuous game where it only stops after a goal is scored and the ball goes back to the middle , and there is a break at quarter and half time . Every size and shape of player can play this game from 7" tall ruckman to 5"8' rovers . The US has over 150 amature teams playing and Europe , Japan , Canada also have teams. If you want to check out an American player there is the Mason Cox story , Don't believe in never. Great reaction and welcome to AFL.

AFL ovals are huge. Some are up to 175 metres long and 150 metres wide. You need 18 players per team to cover the ground effectively, seeing as how play can go in any direction at any time. To answer your questions, illegal hits are those that make contact with the head and those that happen 'off the play'. You can only lay a hit/bump on a player who is within around 5 metres of the ball and involved in the current play, and you can only tackle the player with the ball. You also can't throw the ball (you need to handball as shown in the video); you must dispose of the ball legally when tackled; you can't run more than 15 metres (around 12-13 running strides for the average player) without bouncing; you can't make an unrealistic attempt at a speccy either. Those flying marks are dangerous so if you jump too early for it to be a realistic attempt, you can be penalized for that too. Penalties are usually free kicks awarded to the other team, but hits to the head can result in fines or suspension, depending on whether it was deemed accidental or carekess and also on the severity of the injury (if any). A player is currently looking at a 4 week suspension for tackling an opponent and dumping him more or less on his head.

One thing the video didn't mention is that you can't tackle above the shoulders or below the knees, otherwise the player gets a free kick for a high tackle or contact below the knees respectively. Other common free kicks include Push in the Back (you can't push players in the back whether it's a physical push or a tackle) and Holding the Man (Tackling someone that doesn't have the ball). Former American basketball players are often recruited for their height. They are used as centre ruck. (The guys in centre who jump for the ball at the start). Collingwood currently has Mason Cox from Texas. He got badly poked in the eye in 2022 season and now wears glasses. We call him “Specsy”. The biggest ground is MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) in Melbourne. It holds just over 100,000. The big teams with the most members, attract crowds of 80,000 during season. Anzac Day (25/4/24) match between Collingwood and Essendon attracted 96,000 people. And it was a draw. Exact same scores!!!! Go Collingwood magpies.

Glad you enjoyed getting a taste of our great game. Although it looks like it was made up from a whole lot of other sports, it is way older than most of these sports. The first game was played in Melbourne in 1858 and the game was codified in 1859. You cannot throw or toss the ball. You have to hold it in one hand and punch it with the other - or kick it, of course. In terms of penalties, free kicks are awarded for many things: holding the ball - when the player with the ball has an opportunity to legally dispose (by kick or hand ball) of the ball and does not do so when tackled; holding the man - when a player grabs an opponent who is not in possession of the ball; illegal tackle - tackling above the shoulders or below the knees; push in the back - pretty much as it sounds; kicking in danger - attempting to kick the ball when a player is at risk of injury (for example, if their hand is near the ball); illegal disposal - dropping the ball when tackled or throwing the ball; running too far - like a travel in basketball, if you run too far (> 15 m in the case of Aussie rules) without bouncing the ball; chopping the arms - hitting an opponents arms when they are attempting a mark; tunnelling - taking out an opponent's legs when they are airborne; blocking - moving to block an opponent's run up to a mark; out of bounds on the full - kicking the ball over the boundary on the full; deliberate out of bounds - deliberately taking (by kick, hand ball, knocking, or walking) the ball over the boundary. There are several others, but these are some of the main ones. For more severe infringements, such as dissent, interfering with a player who has taken a mark or been awarded a free kick or infringing on the protected space of a player who has taken a mark or been awarded a free kick, the umpire will award a 50 m penalty, which means that the infringed player will be moved 50 m towards their goal (unlike soccer, this means the goal they are trying to attack, not defend) to take their kick. This is obviously a big advantage and can often result in a certain goal. There is no yellow or red card or "sin bin" in Aussie rules. Serious infringements, such as punching, dangerous tackles etc are dealt with by the umpire reporting the player whose case will then be reviewed after the game. This will often result in a suspension or one or multiple games or perhaps a fine. It all depends on the severity of the incident (whether it was deliberate or careless, whether it was head high or to the body and how forceful it was) and on the record of the player. One of the biggest games of the season (probably the biggest outside of finals) is happening next week. It is the ANZAC game played between Essendon and Collingwood at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It honours the soldiers (ANZACs - Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) who fought and died in wars. It is on Thur 25 April and it would be worthwhile seeing if you can watch it live.

"I bet this is so much fun to see in person" - sure is, and even more fun to play!! EDIT: AFL is a bit different to other sports - the concept of 'penalty' is a bit different, and often commenators will talk about "earning a free kick" rather than it really being seen as a big disadvantage (just a little one). It focuses on 'Free Kicks' (basically an unimpeded kick). You get a free kick for a number of reasons - the video talks about taking a mark or getting caught "Holding the Ball". There's also "Holding the man" (tackling someone without the footy); "Push in the back" (what it sounds like); Tackling someone too High (High Tackle) or too low (Tripping/Legging); Kicking it out of bounds without bouncing (Out on the Full). There's also a few other infringements that might cost a "Free" but you'll gt the hang of them if you continue the journey (some are a bit nuanced). The AFL's main concept of penalty tnds to be when you take things too far - interfere with someone awarded a free kick or argue with an umpire (or a few other things) and the player taking a free might be awarded a '50m penalty' - this literally means the free kick can be taken 50m further up the ground - which can make a big difference if it puts someone into a scoring position..... There's a few other videos that explain other subtleties (the older AFL one that was targeted at a US audience explains things a bit differently there's also a youtubr called "Ninh explains" or similar that explains it pretty well (possibly more than once)). Like most sports, though, you'll learn far more by watching it than by having people try to explain it

It is the game of extreme athleticism. The oval ball gives a random movement so the players have to be on high alert at all times. The players run for 10-15 kilometres per game,.They are super fit ! I must admit i'm not a footy or tennis fan BUT i come from a long line of AFL (previously VFL crazies) and my earliest memories include attending the footy with my grandfather. Point being.. that even i not being a fan, really really enjoys a live football match.. it IS rivetting .. and when you are at the MCG.. its really well designed it feels like you are sitting right there on the front row even if you're not.

It's no way near equivalent to the Super Bowl. For one, we don't have the budget or flair to have a half-time show as big as theirs. We can only afford artists that are past their prime for some pre-game entertainment (last year, we had KISS) and that's it. We don't have special ads just for that game. And it's played during the afternoon, which isn't as atmospheric as night prime time.

AFL is one the oldest sports codes in the world. It's not based on any other sport in the world. No Rugby, Soccer, or anything else. The first game of AFL was played in the 1850's. The field was 1 mile long & took about 3 day's to complete.
@Michael-D.-Williams

Its not based on other codes, but I think it was certainly influenced by those other football codes in the beginning. Tom Wills attended Rugby school, and other founders also played those games in Britain, so they were able to clearly determine which rules they liked and which to leave out.

Illegal Hits: Tackling above the shoulders or below the knees, because dangerous Pushing in the Back. You can jump on someone when chasing the ball, but you can't shove them from behind to make them miss. Kicking in Danger: ie. kicking the ball when its on the ground and people are trying to grab it during a tackle.

It’s played all over Australia, although in the states of New South Wales and Queensland Rugby League is more popular. It’s slowly getting more popular in those states though. It doesn’t require a lot of equipment, all you need to play it is a big open area, some posts and a ball, so that makes it open to everyone and you’ll see kids playing everywhere from grassy parks to the dusty outback. Although supporters are passionate about their teams and deck themselves out in their team colours even if they’re watching the game on TV at home, it’s a friendly rivalry; opposing supporters mingle in the stands and there’s a family atmosphere of everyone enjoying their favourite game together.

The VFL, which became the AFL in the 80s after adding teams from outside the state of Victoria started in 1896, so the sport is well over 100 years old at this point. It’s believed certain elements of the game date back to mark grook… a game played by indigenous Australians. And example of a penalty would be if you tackle someone too high or low. A tackle must be laid between the shoulders and knees. Or if you you hold a player when they do not have possession in order to prevent them reaching the ball. It’s usually incredibly fast paced and often high scoring with some astonishing feats of athleticism. Great fun to watch.

It is the fastest and most fun football anywhere. It is also the oldest coded game anywhere. It takes from no other sports because it was first. You need to watch What Is AFL first. Then you will get a better idea of the size of the field. Kind of makes an NRL field look like a tennis court. The record crowd for a Grand Final is 105,000 fans. You would call that the Super Bowl. Yes, there are 18 players in each team and 4 on the bench. There is nothing like a full MCG when the fans roar. Thank you. The season is on now, they have a live game on KZfaq each weekend. They also have 50 teams in America, one in each State called the US AFL that no American seems to know about. My team is the Collingwood Magpies or just the Pies. We have the only American player and he signed up before he ever saw a game. I can’t call him American Pie anymore because he is now an Aussie. Look up Mason Cox.

Not quite. Rugby was codified slightly earlier, but only by a few years. The tackling elements of Australian football came from people influenced by rugby. I like to think that the 'no offside' rules also came from people who were influenced by rugby, but negatively.

There's another video on the AFL's KZfaq channel, a bit older, called What is AFL? Aussie Rules Explained. Also worth watching (just don't bother with the "updated" version that some amateur diced and sliced a couple of years ago). It explains a bit more eg tackling needs to be between shoulder and knee, not high or low. It says 90,000+ at the Grand Final, that's out of date since a new grandstand was built. This sport pre-dates most modern sports, being first played under written rules in 1858.

In AFL back in the 60s it was full contact, complete with bloodied faces, full brawls where even the trainers got involved. You don't get red cards or yellow cards, or sent off. You get reported and have to sit at a tribunal of the AFL and can face suspension. There used to be a lot of bloodshed back in the 60s and before, but now they've altered the rules so much that it is almost a non contact sport.

It’s not really an Australia wide game historically. Until fairly recently it was focused on the southern and western parts. The two biggest eastern and northern states, with about half the population, were mainly rugby states. Aussie rules has made more inroads there as the game has expanded professionally in the last 30 years although most of the pro players there (Sydney and Brisbane) still come from the south and west (Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart and their rural hinterlands). It’s a great sport in terms of continuity- no time outs, breaks for replacements to come on, or for lining up a penalty kick or scrums as in rugby. It’s a bit like soccer in that the players are spread end to end, not both sides of an offside/scrimmage line as in NFL or rugby. Not overly specialised as every player has to be able to kick, catch the ball, tackle, hand pass and run a lot. So all round athleticism at a premium. Fast moving and often spectacular. Occasionally it can get boring or unsightly if there is a lot of congestion with players grouped in one area of the field, and if there is a lot of fumbling. The two teams of 18 fit on the field because most ovals are about 150 m long plus or minus 20 metres. The shape probably came from the origins of the game being first played on cricket fields, which most of the AFL grounds are in the summer. Luckily for fans no one else plays it, like NFL, and so they can feel like their heroes are best of the world. Whereas watching basketballers and NFL wide receivers, they should realise they are very lucky no one else plays it. It also means we are drained of half our national strength in beating people in a sport that other people care about winning in - rugby. And even our rugby playing pool is divided in two.
