its a hire that a gm that is just going through the last year of his contract does. They will most likely have a lack luster season because even if Hiller tries to change this isnt his roster of players at all and so hes stuck just getting the experience of coaching a team as " the guy" its obviously gonna be a shitty season but thats what happens when you have an aging cast of guys from past teams mixed with a crop of young guys from a half baked re-build attempt. Its not a full on rebuild when you keep Kopitar, Doughty, Brown etc its similar to what the sharks had before Joe and Pat left (at least we won 2 though)

@@bearcookie13 kings need 2 legitimate right handed shots. 2 seasons ago they had Vilardi and Arvi and finished the season 4rth in PP efficiency. This season Vilardi was gone and Arvi was injured most of the season. Kings never addressed that with adding other right handed shooter options. They adjusted by sliding DD and Spence left. This season, without a right handed shot on the 2 units they can't stack 1 timers accross the 3 on the 1-3-1 and teams will cheat to cover Kempe's shot on the right. Kings ended up middle of the pack if not lower all season long. Gotta get 2 right handed power play shooters this summer to fix the power play.

100% agree. I knew we would get a bunch of political answers with no concrete information or even a hint of an opinion. Honestly almost pointless having him on. He sounded snippy when Eddie asked some very standard/expected questions. I'm an everydayer on this podcast, Eddie does a great job but Zach is a bummer.

OK so there's no "magic bullet" for the PLD problem. May I suggest a possible starting point? EFFORT. Maximum effort all the time. He has to WANT to do this. He's 25, big, strong, and talented. What's the problem? It's in his head.

I'm not happy. Nothing against Hiller, but they need a complete change in direction that includes more offense. Having five players camp out in front of the net and then claim how great the defense is... it's absurd. It's also boring. It hasn't worked. The Kings need to reconfigure the talent makeup-- that should include for a pure goal scorer or dynamic playmaker like Marner. They need a power forward like Evander Kane. Losing Roy will be a big loss, more than people realize. They need another big, tough d-man like Englund. They also need a legit first-string goalie that can play longer than next season.
@Ryan-pg7uo
@Ryan-pg7uo Ай бұрын
In all honesty, this can still very well be a new direction. What is known is this, Jim Hiller had to go with Todds system as a assistant coach. When Todd was let go, he still had to continue the system for obvious reasons not worth mentioning. It is entirely possible he will implement a new coaching style. However the reality of this situation is this, if he still uses the 1-3-1 next season, then this was a decision from the management. Meaning if it wasn’t Hiller, it would have been another coach who would have been on board to the 1-3-1. If we see a change in play style, then this is because the management is on board to a new direction in play style. At the end of the day, don’t forget who’s doing the interviewing for coaches. The coaches must either sell a new direction in coaching or adopt the status quo’s the team has in place. Im highly skeptical this management will allow a new style of play, but im optimistic if they do, Hiller was the one who sold them on the things he wanted to change. But after hearing Rob only focus on GA during the press conference, the 1-3-1 will probably be back albeit with slight tweeks. Sorry for rant. GKG!
@bhbecca
@bhbecca Ай бұрын
@@Ryan-pg7uo I understand what you're saying. Hiller most definitely would have had to share a different vision for the future in order to get the job. And he might be the best choice in the end, time will tell. BUT-- if I was Blake and my job was on the line I'd be bringing in an experienced and reputable coach. At the end of the day, no matter what system they play they'll need the right blend of talent. They need to make some significant changes to the roster. As good as Kopitar is... he'll be another year older and he's never been an elite scorer. They need another Kempe caliber scorer and they need a big bodied power forward. Too many little guys getting manhandled. Edmonton's forwards are bigger than our D-men. Draisitl does whatever he wants and never pays a price-- this must stop.

@@bhbeccaPersonally i would be very surprised if they brought Blake back considering his contracts up next year. Barring the kings go deep into the playoffs next season i think he’s gone. At the same time i wont underestimate the organization’s ability to double down once again on a decade of failure. To your point of depth scoring and talent, very much agree. Kopi is at the end of his career no matter how you slice it, and the fact him and drew still put in team leading TOI and in drews case basically league leading TOI for a Dman is concerning. Definitely a indication that something is wrong in the talent pool thats holding the coaches back from letting the young guys alleviate that from them. I could be wrong though. But i agree with you, we definitely need more offensive talent. At the same time though, i do know there are guys on the team who can produce more given a more offensively viable system. It may not even be about the amount of talent on the team, but that the talent cant reach their full potential under such system. But also lets not forget that 1-0 game. The Kings controlled the physicality of that game. The kings most definitely can play hard and be a very tough hitting team. The problem is they still got beat at their own game. They played a perfect “kings style of hockey” game and got beat. I think at the end of the day the system is holding this team back, and its no use bringing in more talented players who wont be able to play the game with the same offensive prowess virtually every other competitive team plays and that they are use to. At that point we are just paying big money for offensive beasts who will be forced into a defensive first mindset at all times that will inevitably hamper their point totals.

If I was Anaheim I would offer sheet QB for 5 million a year honestly its straight up collusion and bad for the fans and NHL that GM's do not do this more, its part of the job and sport to try and win and get the best players available. I at this point we need to be held accountable for these bad decisions and an offer sheet on QB would force us to address this BS

Ummm. Sure. Now fix the roster. I’m going to cry if we’ve already blown it. We were one of the OLDEST teams by minutes played so we have less time than we think. Also what the heck was the idea behind PLD? We’re in win now mode, not replace kopitar two years from now mode. We wasted a year and have no cap space. It could get ugly.

If you noticed, after Hiller was brought aboard as an Asst., the PP initially improved then Todd and the team devoted an off-season to improving the PK after its miserable failure last season's playoffs. Fast forward to this season's playoffs under Hiller, even if he wasn't brought in until midseason and BOTH Special Teams looked abysmal in the playoffs. That Hiller is pretty much receiving a free pass on this for the most part because he was promoted to head coach after Todd's dismissal when he was,, as if that really excuses the team's Special Teams play under him is beyond me.

@@mbuckley3828 40 years of kings hockey under my belt and I just don't trust kings hiring coaches or gms for that matter. Dave Taylor and Lombardi was the only stretch where kings actually build something. Sutter of course was the crucial hire to get the best out of the group and win 2 cups.

I am happy with Hiller. He is a cerebral coach. Owned his own staticstics company before working in the NHL. Only critique i have is he used the 11/7 for the end of the season. Basically to make the playoffs at all cost. Once the playoffs started he had a bit more freedom to do his own thing and he changed the system. The playoffs aren't where you experiment. You do that during the regular season to fine tune it. I would've rather have seen LA run the 1-3-1. A system that they knew, rather then switch to the 1-2-2. A system that was new to the players going up against a veteran Edmonton team. Next season if they switch to the 1-2-2 or even a more aggressive 2-1-2 i am fine with it because they will have a full season to refine it, but no more drastic system changes once we hit the playoffs. Figure out a system and refine it during the season. Not the playoffs.

@michaelv1986 Brown, Quick, Greene, Mr Game 7, Carts, Mike Richards, Stolly, etc... So many guys in the room as leaders and dedicated to being champions. Even then, they brought up guys like Nolan and King, and they contributed more than these overpaod bums like Fiala and PLD. Mr. 30 goals all of a sudden, Moorsey, and I am your #2 center, Filip Daneult, completely disappeared in the playoffs. Idk. I like both those guys, but like Byfield and Clarke are not Kopi and Drew, Moore, and Daneult and not Richards and Carter. Really, much of the identity is lost and needs to be found again, and I really don't think there is a coach out these that can solve this without a change in on ice personnel.
