Install Raid on PC/Mac for Free clcr.me/xyLzSM Start with💰50K silver and get a Free Epic Champion as part of the new player program ! Our initial plan was to cover the battle of Lepanto next, but it was impossible to ignore Cyprus and the iconic siege of Famagusta. At the same time, we mentioned the first Ottoman conflict with Russia in a few sentences. Down the line, new videos will be made covering that conflict in detail. Thanks for being with us!

Funnily enough, even though the war for Cyprus was the reason for the battle of Lepanto, the Holy League never actually mounted an assault to retake the island as it basically collapsed due to bickering after winning at Lepanto.

The Holy League could win at sea, but to mount an assault on land near to the coast of Anatolia was a completely different affair. 70 year later, in the Cretan war, Venice easily won all the sea battles, but in the end Lost Crete anyway, since the Ottomans could sustain 19 years of siege.

Yes, but the Venetians achieved this goal mainly through commerce and not by conquer, looting and slavery like ottomans did. Of course we can't forget the fourth crusade and its huge impact. But that occurred only once and we can claim that it was not planned from the beginning. Also i have never heard that the Venetians flayed someone ALIVE, just like the Ottomans did to Bragadin and others.

The Ottomans were planning to open the Don-Volga Canal but the Crimean "allies" tricked Ottomans that it was "too cold" and there was "no food" and started rumors which ended up with military unrest. Crimean Khanate thought that if the canal opens it would damage their authority in the region. The Ottoman soldiers were unaware about the weather conditions in North so the soldiers were easily tricked. The construction of the canal was already started by the soldiers but with the military unrest Ottomans had to stop. Crimea literally helped Russians during this time.

In a book by David Brewer regarding this time period it is said that baglioni was beheaded and his head was shown by lala mustafa as a trophy and bragadino had his nose and ears cut, as you mention as well. GORE ALERT But afterwards, as the book states, they utterly humiliated him by making him work as a slave having to carry heavy sacks of rocks on the walls that he defended, then they tied him naked on a pole in a central square and skinned him alive. After his death they took his skin and filled it with hay, put his clothes on it and paraded in famagusta with it on top of a cow.
@Leonfromre4and2
@Leonfromre4and2 3 жыл бұрын
Also, this book states that lala mustafa knew about the hostages being killed, thus his motivations can only be speculated
@blacktaler
@blacktaler Жыл бұрын
Then this book is wrong, because first of all, being naked around people or even at home is restricted in Islam and looking at other people's private parts is also haram and those commanders who got the island of Cyprus were muslims. Therefore as author says, they conquered the island because of pirate attacks.

Fun fact on Marcantonio Bragadin: he was flayed alive and then decapitated, his body quartered and distributed as a trophy to the Ottoman troops. The skin was then stuffed with straw, sewn together with the head and paraded on the streets of Famagusta, to be then brought back to Selim II in Istambul. Years later a venetian merchant stole it and brought it back to Venice. It is now buried in an urn in the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo.

It's a shame people think the Ottoman Empire started to decline the second Suleyman the Magnificat died. Yes there were hints of decline during Suleyman's reign but the Ottomans would still be one of the most powerful states in the world going into the 1800s. Hopefully in the next video about the Battle of Lepento there won't be a "the beginning of the end" narrative for the Ottomans. As with many other empires like the Roman Empire, the Ottoman decline can't be traced to one specific event but a serious of events that spanned centuries. I know Kings and Generals won't make this mistake like so many over dramatic documentary's from over the years. If I learned something about the historical KZfaq community it's that we strive to learn about all aspects of history and not just a popular narratives. Love you guys and love all of your work! -Ege

selim 2 was competent sultan but inactive one who left all the work for the slave grand vizirs. He organised the succession system in the empire to almost perfect condition. All sehzades were kept in the palace only the oldest one went to a sanjak to learn statecraft and when the current sultan so his dad died he would come to the palace kill his siblings there, pay the janissary and become the new emperor. Better than the previous system where all sehzades would battle for the throne. The empire was too big to handle a crisis like that again. The empire needed stability. He knew how to use the religion when the divan was not okay with his decisions. When he ordered to conquer cyprus the divan did not agree so the day after he said that he saw the prophet in his dream and that he commanded him to conquer cyprus where then everyone obliged like a dog. New sultans could a) rule the empire or b) let the slaves run the empire which most sultans did the b option. But when Ahmet 1 became sultan he decreed to make sibling kill not legal anymore and then whenever a sultan wanted to rule he was deposed whenever a new sultan wanted to reform he was deposed etc. The slave system also was not practiced anymore the positions of grand vizirs etc were literally for sale by paying the janissaries and forcing the sultan to accept X as the new vizir. Ahmet 1 outlawing sibling kill contributed dumb sultans which contributed to the collapse of the devsirme system. Major event is ahmet 1 bro supporting events are american gold that inflated ottoman economy by 50% in one day, east west trade decline and industrial revolution ( which the ottomans had the basis for hundred years earlier than europeans but did not care; taqi ad din's work)

@Muhammed Enam Ahmed 170041036 no read better selim 2 made it almost to perfection by not allowing all sehzades to go to sanjak only the oldest one and when sultan dies he goes to the capitol and kills every claimaint and everyone sucks him since the slaves cannot become sultan or other person since there is no artistocracy in the empire. 2 mehmed legalised 2 selim adjusted it since the empire was too big to handle a crisis. Ahmet 1 did kill the empire not selim 2 lmao. If selim wanted to reform the empire he could have done it but did not. When 2 mustafa,2 osman, 3 selim, 3 ahmet wanted to reform they were deposed or killed because of ahmet 1 when ascending the throne they were not allowed to kill their siblings so when they wanted to reform they were deposed and or killed. When mahmud 2 the reformer of the empire wanted to reform he killed all his brothers and claimaints and sent their bodies to the janissaries who wanted to depose him and the janissaries returned to their barracks. Then the sultan killed them and reformed the empire BUT IT WAS TOO LATE since the west had the upperhand which could not be reversed by that time lmao

"Bragadino had his ears and nose cut off and after imprisonment, he was executed". Wow, what a sanitized presentation of that execution. Here's the gruesome details left out: The pasha was so enraged by the execution of the pilgrims (even though there is no historical evidence that that execution ever took place), that he pulled his sword and personally cut one of the Venetian's ears. Then he ordered that the other ear as well as the nose of the general be cut off, and then be put in jail. One can only imagine the agony of headache and lack of sleep during these two weeks of imprisonment. Even every breath must have been a torture. But the Ottomans had more in store. After they took him out of prison, he was taken on a ship where the Turkish sailors taunted and abused him. Then he was hanged and flayed alive. In order to maximize his pain during the skinning, the exposed flesh was sponged with salty water. After that and while still alive, he was quartered and the pieces were sent to Constantinople for display at the palace as was customary. The gruesome news reached Europe, and had a big impact on the fighting spirit of the Cristian soldiers and sailors during the Battle of Lepante.

It's quite interesting that the Greek population cared very little about the Ottoman invasion at the time. Malta and Cyprus were both colonies of Catholic powers, the Knights Hospitaller for the former, the Ventians for the latter. But the Maltese shared a religion with their colonial overloards, even if they dislkied them. and thus were more determined to resist an invasion by Muslim Turks. The Greeks on the other hand were Orthodox Christians and saw little difference in being ruled by Muslims or by Catholics. Indeed, the Ottomans mostly allowed the islanders autonomy in their own affairs. After Ottoman conquest, the effective government in Cyprus was the Orthodox church, who were responsible for collecting taxes and was the largest landowner on the island. The Turks largely left the Orthodox church in peace, unlike the Venetians before them.

@the Belgian Yes, that was barbaric but not unusual by medieval standards. Sieges were costly for the besiegers, so unless they immediately surrendered, there would be a sack. The Turks massacred and enslaved the people of Nicosia and Famagusta, but this was because they resisted the siege. Otherwise the Greek natives cared little that they had Muslim overlords instead of Catholic overlords.

So why did continental Greeks kept uprising sponsored by Venetians? According to the contemporary accounts I read, the Cypriots were simply extremely poor and mistreated by their local lords, not the Venetians, that's why they didn't care about defending the rulers like most of their contemporaries btw

The campaign of the Humayun fleet to Cyprus led by Lala Mustafa Pasha began with several surprise naval raids launched by Damad Biala Pasha on the ports and factories of Venetian ships in Dalmatia, Crete, Italy and Venice itself, burning and destroying more than 200 ships and killing thousands of their men. A land landing of 60,000 men on Cyprus began on 1 June 1570, a Venetian army tried to repel them near Kyrenia, but were wiped out and lost 12,000 dead. On June 9, the Humayun army seized the city and 40 ventian ships and killed the rest of the remnants of the Venetians. Then the Humayun army seized Lefkosia after bombarded it for 49 days they sacked the city slaughtering 10,000 Venetians & 20,000 Greeks and seized 150 guns on 9 September.. Larnaca, Limassol, and most of the island surrendered without a fight Lala Pasha appointed Mustafa Pasha as governor of Cyprus and left him in Lefkosia with 2,000 men Then he headed to besiege Magusa with 40 ships, while Berto pasha headed with a fleet of 400 ships to Italy and landed in Sicily and managed to besiege the Crusader fleets preventing them of supplying Cyprus Humayni managed to capture Magusa after being starved for 13 months, & after the sixth assault on August 1, 1571, the entire garrison were massacred. In the Cyprus campaign, the Humayun army lost 20-25,000 men, the population of Cyprus decreased from 360,000 to 120,000 .. Thousands of settlers were brought from Andalusia and Anatolia, and they settled on the island.
