Exactly. I think there has always been a lack of emphasis on how much of Japanese resources were locked in the Sino-Japanese front. If the battle of attrition did not take place on the sino front, the Americans would not have had such an easy time during their landings on pacific islands. The Japanese would have a lot more soldiers to send to positions like Iwo Jima and the marshall islands.

@@jaythompson5102 The mission of the Flying Tigers are merely to protect an international supply line. They do not operate in the entire area of China and certainly cannot stop Japanese air dominance with the little force they have. They are not even officially US army but volunteers that form part of the ROC air force. Not that I am ungrateful to the American aid during China's difficult times, but let's not blown things out of proportion, which is disrespectful toward people that sacrificed much more.

An often overlooked fact is that Japan considered attacking the Soviet Union during Barbarossa. One main reason it decided to move south was due to the large number of troops tied up in China. In hindsight, that could have been one of the most critical moves for the Axis to win the war.

I hope you guys continue to talk about Japan’s war effort in China. Too often, only 1937 - 1938 is talked about and as soon as the US enters the war, the whole front in China gets dropped from conversation. It comes up again during Operation Ichi-Go but that’s so late into the war and while very bloody, is ultimately inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Edit: “Inconsequential” was poor word choice on my part so I apologize. My point still stands in that China took so much of Japan’s war power, but a lot of the conversation in media is about the US island campaign. That’s why I was disappointed with Hardcore History’s Pacific War series. Side note, the episode for this topic on the podcast was fantastic and went into more detail. Hopefully this series continues to talk about what happened in China up until 1945. Honestly, the only western source I can remember talking about it in detail is Rana Mitter’s book Forgotten Ally. I know there are more but I can’t recall off the top of my head.

Well it is true, but i don't believe it inconsequential, at the end of the day if severed US support to the Nationalists, and created a rift between them, allowing the Comunists to take over at the end of the day. Fun Fact---A group of Elite Chinese Soldiers (trained by the Germans) stayed behind in Shanghai and resisted the Japanese for so long and thus turning Shanghai into the Stalingrad of China. They caused the Japanese so much trouble. These soldiers were forced into the international section of the city where they would be interred for a longtime. Their commanding officer would refuse to support the Chinese collaborators and would be assassinated for it. Shame what happened to these guys. This is a great depiction of how strong Chinese resistance was. Yes, they lost territory, but they never lost the ability to resist and keep fighting. That said, I'm curious about the internal politics of the KMT whenever Chiang decided to keep fighting. Were there people in the KMT government who would have settled for peace rather than a long war? In the UK there were some who were willing to sign a peace treaty with Germany after all. Internal politics are just as important as battlefield results.
@smoolensko1672

Most of the KMT hign command were determined to resist, including Chiang himself, though he did took control of the CCP elite army under his command and kept a close eye on them. Those who were willing to sign peace with the japanese were mostly warlord leaders, such ad Yan Xishan and Tang Enbo, these figures seek to preserve their power during the conflict and fought passively and never achieve dominace within the chinese politics. In 1938 Wang Jingwei, Chiang`s main political rival within KMT, declared peace with the japanese after failed to convince Chiang to do so. He soon became the puppet ruler of Janpanese occupied China (Reorganized National Government), and thus is condemned as national traitor to this day.

The country literally fought for half a century non stop. And before Korea war, McArthur thought Chinese army is some kinda of a joke.

Yes, there are few commentaries that properly explain that Chiang Kai-shek first started by attacking the Japanese in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. In this video, Chiang Kai-shek's declaration of invasion of Manchuria is omitted. Chiang Kai-shek's invasion of Shanghai and his declaration of invasion of Manchuria was the beginning of the Japanese government's counterattack.

Interesting fact, the INA and Bose were not considered traitors by their fellow Indians. Many Indians, even those who fought with the British against the Japanese, considered the INA not to be collaborators, but fellow independence fighters who chose a wrong path, and protested when the British attempted to try INA leaders. The resulting fallout led to the British not considering the Indian Armed Forces to be that trustworthy anymore, and contributed to Britain leaving India in 1947.
