NOTE: The templates are now FOLDED in an oversized envelope. Not rolled up like I show in the video. They are exact, and shipping is much quicker.
This video is about how I made money, and advice I have given others on how to make money doing woodworking. I am centering the video around a project build because that will make it more interesting. It also happens to be a very important project for making money. I actually paid much of my way through college by doing woodworking, and I have also helped many others do the same.
The build itself is a new style of Adirondack Chair that I designed myself. It is very comfortable since it consists of compound curves for the back and seat. Yet even with these curves it is quite easy to build. I have also designed the set of plans to allow the end maker to use any lumber from ¾” thick to big box store lumber that is 1-1/2” thick, and regardless of lumber thickness, it does not affect the plan or dimensions at all.
This is a very detailed build video, and much of it will be focused on perfecting the details of a salable piece. And some advice that can hopefully improve your woodworking if you are a beginner.

After purchasing your template and Instructions, I decided to try and build one. I followed your video that helped me through the process, I have to say that I was extremely happy with the finished product. In a week or two, I'm going to make my 2nd one. Thanks for being so detailed in your video. This made my life so much easier. My wife was very happy with the finished product she had to post some pictures on Facebook bragging on my work. Thanks a million!!!

Hello Mr. King. I have been watching your videos for quiet a while now. I subscribed emmediately after watching one of your videos the first time. Back in November 2020 when you posted this video, I watched it 3 or 4 times before deciding to purchase the plans and the full size template on Nov 17,2020. I had most of the tools( drills,drivers,palm sander, mitersaw and planer).This project was a great reason to purchase a bandsaw. On January 29,2021 I finally started the project by purchasing the rough lumber from my local lumber yard and started the project. Yesterday March 10th,2021 I finally finished 5 chairs for my family and I. I really like the idea of building the chairs, I enjoyed cutting lumber to size, planing it , drawing utilizing the template( also made a more permanent template out of 1/2" plywood) But I absolutely LOVE....LOVE the final product. My other Family members and neighbors are asking me to build them some. I Love the size of the chairs, how comfortable they are and I LOVE the fact that when I grab and hold of the chair it feels like I am actually holding a good quality piece of furniture. During this built I watched this video probably a 1000 times, it helped me everytime. I wanted to say thank you for all the work you do and share. Looking forward to your next video. Thank you

Brings back wonderful memories of making this chair with my dad back in the 70s. We bought chairs from a man driving around the neighborhood with chairs and tables stacked 15 feet in the air. We had those chairs until we couldn't repair or patch them anymore. I would love to make this chair from scratch. Wonderful beginner project for me.

I don't know how many times I've watched this video, but when I start making a batch of chairs I love watching it to inspire me all over again! Since I started making them for like 2 years ago I've improved my shop to make these chairs! I've made them with a corded jigsaw, router and sander. This is the first time with a bandsaw, router table and baltic Birch templates. We quickly ran the cedar through the planer today, which before we sanded all the rough cedar, so we saved some time already! My son and I have built the last three chairs and he's helping me do these 4 too! I love building these so much! Thanks as always James!!! I post up pics in the group page

First off - I bought the plans. Thank you very much for making such a detailed video with tips and tricks! Dimensional Cedar isn't available anywhere near me, and I don't have the tools to mill my own lumber from a lumber yard. Would you recommend Southern Yellow Pine or Pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine for this build? I have heard it's always best to wait for treated lumber to dry fully before assembling which infers staining and assembly will take a very large amount of time for my chair project.
@gpdoyon
@gpdoyon 3 жыл бұрын
Cedar is relatively pricey for me so I am going to build my first version in pine, too. I'll use it outside but I'll put stain and a weather sealer on it, too. I'll make a second one, maybe, from cedar the second time. I, too, bought the plans!

I'm in same situation as you I'm in NY. Only cedar in stores is fence pickets. I was looking at kdat decking boards. It's pressure treated then kiln dried. Found 2 lumber yards near me with it available going to check prices later.

The only change I would make for aesthetics would be to pencil a line wherever you have a row of screws so they form a straight line. I think that would look much better than a wavy line as in the front of the back rest pieces and the seat pieces.

For an old guy who needs to have a new way of doing things as opposed to my previous lifestyle as a pastor/teacher, I'm looking to start up woodworking. I first learned this in wood shop in high school and have done some handy jobs over the years but now its on to new and better projects. First I thought I'd just do something for fun, but your detailed, yet simple to understand instructions have given me the idea of making some extra money to compensate for cost of living and inflation. I have the basic tools you spoke of on the video and I want to get started with building the chairs. Also, you offered the template for a deserving guy...I hope that I qualify. At any rate, I anxious to be going. I'm gonna be watching your video over and over and get myself up and going by the first of the year. Blessings and Merry Christmas. Gene Evans, Sugar Land, TX

I'm very interested in the templates - these chairs look amazing, I've never bought 'fine' furniture before so the price tag is initially shocking, but considering the number of hours put into it I guess it makes sense. I've enjoyed your videos, you do a great job making content. One small point - for the screws in back slats at the level of the arm rests - you don't make sure they're in a straight line across? It seems pretty noticeable in the video that they're uneven, not sure if that's something a customer has ever mentioned. Seems like it should be easy enough to mark a horizontal line or a clear curve to make it look even better once finished.

Hello from 🇨🇦 . My wife just loves these chairs , but the ones you buy at the stores are junk. So glad I found this video , I was going to make a couple but was not exactly sure on how to make them look good and be COMFORTABLE. So I watched this video and bought the plans and the templates. While I was there I figured I may as well get the plans for the table saw sled as I just purchased my first NEW saw, and I will most definitely make use of that as well . So I am looking forward to getting the drawings shipped to me. Thanks for all you do for newbies like me . 👍

Thanks for such an AMAZINGLY COMPREHENSIVE video. Most of these videos I have seen give very limited to no details . Nor do they explain the why or how behind what they are doing! This video is saved to my favorites! Thank you again!

Hey James, Figures I would stumble upon this video months after you put this video out and offer the plan templates for free for some fortunate woodworker. I definitely like your mindset about how to take one's fav hobby and use it to support their wood working habit. LOL. I'll definitely look forward to purchasing a set of your plans both for the standard adirondack chair and the rocker version you did in a later episode that I first stumbled onto. I really like how you used different woods to add an additional two-tone finesse I have never seen anyone else try with their adirondack chair builds. And I really like that you add curves to your cut wood slats so that one's back fits more comfortably when sitting in the chair for long periods of time - especially if you don't use cushions for the seat or back. That is definitely paying attention to comfort I don't see very often in other videos. My hat's off to you, dude. Great work!

I have to be honest. Ever since I had to stop working due to my health, things have been really hard financially. I do a little woodworking to try to do things for my children with scrap wood that I find in the garbage "cause we can't really afford it anymore" I try to make little things to try to sell to make some extra money. But having nice plywood templates like this could really help us maybe make something worth a little more. I'm not looking for sympathy, but I must admit that it would be a fabulous gift! You really do beautiful work. Thanks

I am about two steps away from having this Adirondack chair done and it was so easy with the plans and the template that I am in love!!! After the first one, I am going to go to a Doug Fir chair or two as covid has increased prices so much ... With Doug fir HD had the materials around $95 per chair... The cedar one is beautiful but the Doug Fir will make me money!!!! thanks James!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've made a couple of Adirondack chairs and what I didn't like were screw holes in the top surfaces of the arm rests or the chair slats. The last chair I made I decided to put pocket screws in and hold the arms and seat slats that way. I just like the look of wood with no screw holes showing and of course helping to prevent water from getting into the wood. However...I do love these chairs you have made James and will be buying plans etc. from you. Fantastic job.

I would love the opportunity to make Adorandack chairs. I've made many picnic tables in the past, There's just something about the smell of cut lumber, I believe it's in my blood. LOL Kind regards, Mike PS, Here's hoping I'm one of the lucky individuals who will receive that wonderful gift you are making.
