119 - Driveway Gate
This video is about how we built our new driveway gate.
There were a few things we wanted our gate to have. The gate is about 8’ wide. We wanted it to be a single and not a double gate. We wanted it to open both inwards and outwards.
We wanted to make sure it would never sag, and we did not want to add a wheel for support.
The posts are cedar, 8”x8”x10’ long. They go 3’ into the ground. They were installed when our concrete patio was poured. The rails are 2”x8” cedar and the pickets are 1”x6” cedar. This is a very heavy gate, so we had to use three massive strap hinges.
We are offering free plans that you can modify for your own build.
Things I used in this build:
Jigsaw amzn.to/3C0k2RJ
Random orbit Sander amzn.to/3eB8k5c
I also frequently use my Ridgid Belt Sander amzn.to/2GF56B7
Router amzn.to/3AXw8tF
Flush trim router bit amzn.to/2XudbBd
Drill & Impact Driver amzn.to/38nvta8
Drill Bit set amzn.to/2IgxpXp
3” deck screws amzn.to/2U5df4V
2-1/2” deck screws amzn.to/2IfQ7yq
1-5/8” deck screws amzn.to/3vuBknR
And here are the some other things I use in my shop: amazon.com/shop/kfw

Glad you took the time to build a mock up of that diagonal support. Most people just try to explain it and it can be tough for non-mechanical people to wrap their heads around. But I see so many put in wrong, even by fence companies.

I so much appreciate the detail put into your builds. I enjoy seeing a little extra time put into what might seem like overkill to ensure that it’s done right the first time, for a long time. I don’t remember who said it, maybe Larry Haun, something along the lines of, “If you don’t have time to do it right the first time, what makes you think you’ll have time to fix it later?”

Since my funds and tools are in short supply it's nice that a lot of your builds are done with very few of both of these things. looks fantastic. With all the expense and grandeur of the gate, I would sand it to 120 and weather seal it. It is just esthetics for me but I hate pocket screws so I would do dowels or dominoes instead of any screws. Great gate you have there. and thanks for the bracing demonstration. Urethane glue would also do well instead of the epoxy.

Great gate and lock and great detailed explanations of what and why you do things. I love the double key deadbolt and will be looking into ordering one for my gate. I have put the middle or opposing hinge pin upside down to prevent the gate from being lifted off it's hinges and gaining entry. I know it is heavy but very short pins holding the hinges in place would make it easily wedged up and off the pins.

Now that's a massive gate! Very nice build and tutorial sir. However, since I personally tend to be a bit paranoid about security, I would have added 2 more sturdy bolts. One above and one below the main lock. And I would find a way to add some spikes to the top of both the gate and the gate posts as a painful deterrent to any one attempting to climb or jump over.
