There was apparently going to be a scene in the Heisei era where he killed and ate an unused kaiju

I would like to make a hypothesis on what Godzilla eats: Sea water. As I understand it, he basically has a nuclear reactor, so he fuels it with the deuterium found in salt water. This is why he likes to live in the ocean, as he can use it to fuel himself, along with keeping cool. This only covers his energy needs. When it comes to minerals and such, sky scrapers serve a nice helping of iron and whatnot. Supplement with an occasional whale for protein purposes. Godzilla is just a really hangry critter who views civilization as a dietary supplement.

Goji feeds on radiation but i like to think he can also feed on meet, he can get food from various sources Most other kaiju seem to be carnivorous or omnivorous, Mothra as a goddess avatar of nature likely doesn’t need to eat, and can gain her life force from the planet itself,

Mike Dougherty also implied that the Legendary Godzilla is carnivorous. Other kaiju are essentially sources of radioactive meat in that continuity.

Godzilla 2014 also eats cars, but he can’t seem to stomach all of them. Mainly FIAT 500L models.

I think if you do a follow up to this, it would be nicer to focus more on the "unusual" diets of monsters. A lot, and I do mean a lot are just your basic people and meat eaters. But you got a ton of unusual ones, (especially from other franchises), that eat much more than that. Legion eats silicon, Gabora eats uraninum, The Mammoth Flower consumes blood, SpaceGodzilla eats comic energy, The Monolith Monsters (I know that is a really far out there idea)...they consume water. The Giant Claw is said to feed on the destruction of matter. Elekings are herbivores but can survive on eating electricity. Neronga eats electricity. Hedoron from Spectreman eats pollution, Pulgasari eats metal. Gamera and Guilala consume energy. Iris sucks the life out of things. You get the point though, I could go on for a while with it lol. But I think the more unusual diets would make for a pretty informative and usual followup to this.

You forgot to mention how it is mentioned in Godzilla vs Destoroyah that Godzilla Jr. seemingly killed tons of whales for food in the waters of Japan. Fun video nonetheless.

I get a feeling that Godzilla is possibly omnivorous, as The Big G was depicted snacking on fish and livestock, yet Minilla seems to get nourishment from fruit. Or who knows? Maybe he's a herbivore. Herbivores tend to be larger than carnivores (and also really aggressive).

I think it would be worth mentioning in another video that in the novelization of Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong wanted to eat the meat off Godzilla's bones during their first encounter on the aircraft carrier. Another kaiju worth mentioning is the Ultraman kaiju, Eleking, who feeds off of electricity.

I remember an old Dark Horse Godzilla comic book that had Godzilla snacking on a whale, eating it like a hotdog.

Some things: 1. While a fully mutated Godzilla is presumably still perfectly capable of heterotrophy physiologically, there is probably something going on with their hunger that gradually weens them off any instincts they may have to hunt. We never see the 1st or 2nd generation Godzilla go after a power plant, but we do have those instances of implied behavior that's a remnant of their hunting instincts before the mutation. It's possible those individuals were acting that way because they simply never made the connection between power plants and food. 2. Which brings up a really important question: we only see him at a power plant every so often, and there's simply not enough stuff on the planet to feed a whole Godzilla that's hunting regularly, so how the hell are any of them surviving at all? One possibility that's been thrown aroond is that they're subsisting on background radiation. I remember hearing this as long ago as GURPS Godzilla, with the idea being that whatever natural process was mutated into Godzilla's reactor heart couldn't have evolved in a world with nuclear power plants, at least not the kind we make. Instead, the biology of processing radiation as an energy source likely would have evolved in Godzillasaurus as something incredibly sensitive, able to use the incredibly weak ambient radiation for... something. Obviously this would have made a poor food source, as Godzillasaurs were still marine predators, but this system existing at all would be exactly why they basically gained super powers after mutation, instead of just... y'know, getting cancer or something. A really interesting idea for why this evolved in the first place comes from that blog hypothesizing the evolution of the Godzilla clade, which basically makes it a form of bioluminescence. Which is to say, the reason Godzilla discharges light from his dorsal plates when using the ray, is because his plates were always meant to emit light in response to radiation. 3. It's a lot like a heat sink, of sorts. Shin Godzilla goes a lot into this sort of thing, how his cardiovascular system is basically the coolant system of a man-made reactor. Which leads into the second possibility, which is, as alluded to by the line in Shin Godzilla saying that he could basically subsist on nothing but air and water, once Godzilla's reactor gets going, it's essentially powering itself. This is another level beyond a source of radiation, where Godzilla is like an "ascetic living on mist." You can still point to possible solutions with the idea of ambient radiation, for instance, when Godzilla is submerged in magma for extended periods of time, there are probably some heavy elements in there. But given how the situation is presented in the films, it really just seems like Godzilla is a self-sustaining engine. We can imagine that ambient radiation helps, and that after periods of exertion he would need to actively seek out some sort of energy (Shin just completely shuts down after exertion, for example, but boots back up when attacked without any obvious radiation source, meaning, again, he was probably just conserving energy in order to build up a store of energy through the self-sustaining process), but ultimately he can do just fine when left to his own devices. 4. Godzillasaurs also appear to be able to enter a state of torpor. The Lagos Island Godzillasaurus apparently didn't move from the spot he was teleported to for over 30 years. Godzillas have been frozen for multiple years. One of them lived in lava for 5. Earth was inactive for so long a *mountain* formed over him. And so on and so forth. This is far beyond simple hibernation and looks more like something a tardigrade would do. 5. Speaking of Earth, kinda shocked you didn't mention this, but given that he's basically a kind of Biollante, cuz part plant, Earth and Filius are 100% capable of photosynthesizing. 6. That's not Godzilla. You have to know this. How the hell could you get that thing confused with Godzilla? 7. Frankensteins are still technically human, so yes, they have human diets. It's unclear where the original came from in the Toho movies, although the text implies a stronger connection with the Universal films than anything else, which would make sense why they don't spell it out, given that that would have been a legal issue. If that's the case, then the Universal Frankenstein appeared to be a kind of "perfect" undead, they were just called immortal, and they could eat, sure, but there's no indication they ever needed anything special to maintain this. Frankenstein is kinda just a highlander I guess, they just... live forever. No idea how that's supposed to work biologically, but he IS undead and these ARE monster movies and Mothra's just fully supernatural, so... y'know, not every monster is gonna make sense. 8. Of the Heisei era Ghidorahs, only 2/6 aren't shown eating. Well, "eating." Based on the fact that every Ghidorah shown feeding feeds on the same thing, and that the Showa Ghidorah has the same MO as 4/6 Heisei Ghidorahs, I think it's more than safe to make the assumption. However, those two cases are both very special. The VS series KG is basically a clone with extra steps, from the Venusian KG, to designer pets, to their mutation. Super Godzilla brings attention to the fact that Ghidorah cells have an "energy storage" potential, which explains why a non-radiovore would still gain super powers from the bomb like Godzilla did. The 2nd generation KG was also being controlled, it wasn't acting on instinct, and so wasn't looking for food, but also, but outside of that it's still a domesticated creature, not a natural Ghidorah, so it wouldn't have the instinct to devour planets in the first place. I'm way more curious aboot what people who cared for Dorats as pets were feeding them than I am what a clone-KG-with-extra-steps eats because I feel like I already know what KG eats. 9. The other special case is, of course, the GMK guardian Ghidorah, or Orochi. The classic myth has Orochi being bested by drinking a lot of booze, which is depicted in a Toho monster movie, albeit as a recounted story, but we have no reason to think that Yamato is lying. However the most recent Toho version of Orochi before GMK was the 1994 film, and that backstory doesn't mention the sake at all, so maybe the version of Orochi that became Ghidorah simply never drank? It's hard to tell. At any rate, the 1994 movie presents Orochi as basically having the same MO as Ghidorah, it was on Earth, started wrecking everything, was banished to space, returned from space, and once again posed a planetary level threat. One super interesting detail is that in the 1994 movie, they actually say that the next time Orochi will appear, they will be acting as a guardian, which is weirdly prescient, but I'm sure this is just a reference to a particular myth I haven't heard. Either way, pre-GMK Orochi seems to be an utterly ordinary Ghidorah based on that, so taking that into account the GMK Ghidorah doesn't really seem odd either. Their motivations are different due to being guided by spirits with a different agenda than the monster's normal behavior (this might even go back as far as Tsukuyomi controlling Orochi to use as a weapon, but the dialogue just kinda suggests Tsukuyomi IS Orochi, which I guess makes one of the Shinto gods a Ghidorah? Weird, but... he is the moon god, so he's technically from space I guess), but as far as their diet, if they ever were to eat, it would probably be the same stuff. Of course, this Ghidorah might also count as undead, which would complicate things further, but you get the idea. Basically, both abberant Ghidorahs aren't actually any different with regards to their diet, they were different because of their motivations.

The vague idea of Showa Goji being carnivorous is also supported in illustrated books from those years. You can find many pictures of Godzilla's habits, and he's shown feasting on whales and sharks. Of course this is just extra material and not the films, but it reflects the general notion at the time about his diet.

In regards to the Baby Zillas, they only really start going after the humans because they picked up the smell of the fish while exploring the wrecked stadium. It's still possible that they may have developed a taste for humans anyway, but the fish smell was very much the initial trigger.

It's kind of surprising how many monsterverse incarnation have actually eaten a human. Kong on Skull Island, the Skullcrawlers, the MUTOs, Rodan nomming that pilot, and King Ghidorah outright devouring Dr. Vivienne Graham. The only exception is Godzilla because Toho states that he cannot eat people.

Gameras diet consists of fire, lava or anything fire related because he is seen feasting on fire in the beginning of Gamera vs barugon

The original King Kong was said to primary be carnivorous in the later prequel books by joe divito, and the Peter Jackson kong was apparent,y a confirmed vegetarian, but with a lot of animals those lines aren’t hard set, so kong maybe have been willing to eat live prey from time to time for protein

Gamera likes to eat fire and gyaos has a hunger for people(because you know he’s a vampire kaiju) Also in godzilla:planet eater his rival(king ghidorah) in that film he also can devour energy like the other incarnations like when he’s devouring Godzilla’s energy in that film

Anytime those '90s kids book about Godzilla get a mention puts a smile on my face. I love the art in those books. My favorite of design of Godzilla and others until Monster-verse.

Just like regular marine iguanas! I always liked to think along with lots of fish Godzilla 98 also eats lots of Algae and other sea plants! But also eats fish cause it’s so much larger and needs the extra nutrients!

Kumonga likely caught Kamacuras with the intention of eating it. In the Ultra series several kaiju have been known to prey on others like Gudon to Twin Tail and Birdon to Kemjili, then theres Astromons that consumed Oil Drinker through its stomach flower

Worth including perhaps is the modern Godzilla of the MechaG duology of the Millennium series (the 54G of that series being the bones of Kiryu): it attacked, killed, and possibly ate some of that giant turtle from a more obscure Toho film.

Seeing how Monster Planet canonically confirms Heisei Godzilla's diet of consuming fruits and deleted segments from Biollante and Destoroyah supporting the species predatory habits alla through Godzilla--again--and Junior, one would think an expert such as yourself would pick up on this.

Great video! Funny, I was just talking about this at work. I suppose it's possible that the original Godzilla was merely killing livestock with the radiation he emits... but your evidence suggests that he (and other mutated godzillasauruses) need to sustain themselves with actual food.

It would seem that a large number of Gamera's foes are humanitarians. Gyaos in all of his incarnations is always feasting on people, as is Zedus. Barugon chowed down on a jewel thief, and there is an anatomical drawing floating around showing Zigra with multiple stomachs, one of which is devoted to digesting humans. So, maybe an exploration of the diets of the Daiei kaiju is in order.

After watching "Gorgo" when I was a kid of six, I could only imagine how many schools of fish, pods of whales and even groups of humans that sea-going dino consumed.

Most likely they made later monsters energy feeders because it would be impractical for them to feed on anything else, especially since they have gotten bigger over the years. Modern Godzilla incarnations are larger than the first Godzilla by what seems like orders of magnitude.

I like to think Godzilla's species can eat basically anything but the adults prefer meat, like cows whales and fish, but the children prefer fruits and vegetables, i would guess that this is due to plants being both easily accessible and enough for them at their young age, but as they get older, they're able to go for more nutritious meals But any of them at any age will prefer radiation

Rodan definitely likes eating humans, I remember that from his debut movie.

I do plan on giving several kaiju a food source in the form of surviving Mesozoic marine reptiles. With sub-Kaiju size ichthyosaurs & plesiosaurs making up the bulk of their diets.

Well Godzilla jr has also ate a burger and whales, the baby Godzillas in the 98 film also ate humans and one of them ate a bag of popcorn, and Micheal Doherty states the monsterverse Godzilla eats radioactive meat

Bemstar from Return of Ultraman and later Ultra series can consume quite a few items on the menu. Including, but not limited to gas, electricity, ice, death ray, missiles, and a space station. Silver Bloome from Ultraman Leo also consume space station.

I don't know if you consider them kaiju per se, but a mention should go to the inhabitants of Skull Island, as across continuities it's shown that even the ones based on herbivorous animals go out of their way to eat humans if they encounter any.

Godzilla lives in water, so it would be logical to assume that he feeds on fish, also considering the size of Godzilla, he could hunt whales.

Since godzilla has a nuclear reactor for a heart i think he doesnt need to waste energy to keep his blood warm, warm blooded creatures use energy to keep their blood warm, so he wouldnt have to waste useful energy for this process which would decrease the amount of food he would have to eat/nuclear energy he'd have to consume I also think most carnivorous kaiju eat bug like kaiju like kumanga and kamacharus since they appear to reproduce in high number and quickly, making them a reliable food source for other kaiju

Meanwhile, in a possible nod to G54's omitted cattle rustling habits, the Marvel Godzilla grazes the tops of trees after being falsely accused of eating cattle from a nearby herd.

With Godzilla consuming radiation, I think if a piece of media just solely stuck with that idea, it'd work. These are fantastical monsters, they don't have to follow the same biology, including dietary consumption. Hell, they could even pull a Godzilla SP and make scientific names, just call him a Radiotroph.

Here’s an interesting fact about Godzilla from the monsterverse. Godzilla actually eats other titans for radiation and most of the times absorbs radiation. Mainly the only times the monsterverse Godzilla would ever eat is when he likes the taste and during his past history before the events in the monsterverse, he had a taste for muto flesh.

Godzilla himself doesn't eat, he feeds on radiation. His species, on the other hand, is most likely omnivorous, as Godzilla Junior fed on plants and meat when he was young. Once he was a sub-adult, he even ate whales.
