kipkay Use a voltage regulator 12 to 3 and hook it up somewhere in the fusebox that way it can only be used when ure key is in the ignition. a lot safer.

Pretty sure that if you go press that switch in that location now, a camera mounted in the dash will take a nicely formated picture of your face and if things go wonky, that picture will end up well publicised. ;-)

You can't FIRST your own video. That isn't fair. I make it a point to go around and type first on all new videos but they take a minute or 2 to show up online and by then you have already typed FIRST. SO THANKS A LOT FOR RUINING EVERYTHING!!! Oh and awesome hacks btw.

Carry your garage door opener with you when you get out. Modern autos allow you to program a built in garage door opener, switch is on the rear view mirror. Very well made video. Kipkay could sell anything!

Linda-Ice Comet Jiao That is most definitely a hack. You clearly don't know what the term "hack" means. In a nutshell it means to be able to make something do a function it wasn't intended to do and/or modify a system. So actually it is a hack and he's smart.

Thank you very much! I have big plans for this hack. Instead of a switch I'll be using an arduino nano and photon sensor to detect when my indoor garden's grow lights kick on and to open/close my garage doors / ventilation hack I made. Normal people just cut holes into their house for such a thing, but many renters (such as I) don't have that lovely option and well this is just perfect.

You could make it even better: use relay connected to ignition to interrupt the wire when the car is not running so noone without keys will be able to use it :)

Unfortunately the ignition line provides 12v, and most garage doors remotes require 5v or 3.3v. So all you would accomplish is frying your remote. There are ways to step down the voltage, but also emit heat so that could cause its own problems to deal with.

That's why he said use a relay. You wouldn't be supplying switched 12V to the opener. You'd be using switched 12V to flip a relay which is in series with the push button switch to make it function only when the ignition is on.

Good idea. You can also retain the original garage remote housing and do a plug in remote switch; with the similar idea of putting velcro on the original unit to hide at the back panel. That way, you can simply unplug the remote switch from the orginal box unit and take it with you in another car, without dismantling the whole assembly and switch from the back side panel of the car.

You can use the original remote control case for this project. OR, you can velcro the original remote to your dash.

Better hack is to wire it to your headlight bright switch. Opener stays in the bucket. Did it on mine, worked great

or you could use ispy and install the license plate plugin. Then connect the garage door opener to a serial port, write a script and set a webcam up to see the license plate.

Bro! Awesome Jeep! My dad and i did something similar to our Jeeps. We put momentary switches in the plastic directly behind the shifter and it works great! Your idea is pretty awesome too though. l Love the videos keep it up man.

We simply inserted our garage door opener into the fabric sleeve over the roll bar on the driver side of our jeep! The batteries are easier to replace with your method!:)

Hello kipkay. Whats about doing a advanced version? If you use a voltage regulator you can connect the garage key directly to the car electronics. For example using the 12V from the radio conections.
