Today we’re on the top of a hill with some amazing views over West Yorkshire. Avid cricketers amongst you might know this place as there’s a brand of cricket bat with the same name. Musician Robert Harvey, of the band The Music, of which I’m a huge fan, is from here as well, so let’s have a look around - we’ll take the long road, and walk it (See what I did there?)
Of Anglo-Saxon origin, it was recorded as Chipesch in the Domesday Book, and was also known as Kypask and Kypax from the 13th century onwards. The placename seems to be composed of an Anglo-Saxon personal name Cippa. The village was first established in a wooded area of ash trees. The pronunciation of the name seems to show Scandinavian influence
Despite being an administrative centre for hundreds of years, the population remained small and it was mostly agricultural until the late-18th century. That’s when coal mining began on a small scale in bell pits. The discovery of coal seams in neighbouring Allerton Bywater saw it undergo a rapid expansion. It wasn’t long before it was transformed into a typical northern mining community in the 19th century
It has now adjusted to a new status as a commuter village. In some ways it’s ideally situated where it is. Its proximity to the A1/M1/M62 means that many residents now commute to Leeds, Castleford, London, Wakefield or York rather than working locally. Its status as a commuter village is seen when we look at how the age groups break down. 58% of residents are of working age, more or less the typical commuter village percentage
