Not only that, I can't remember ANY other media that has involved a former hive mind. If a hive mind is ever depicted as being broken at all, that's usually where the story ends, and the whole species along with it.

​@@InchonDM This is very true. It doesn't help that have minds tend to make it so individual personalities aren't a thing. I'm wondering how different a hive mind can be if each person within the hive can live their own way even as apart of the unit.

@@kairon156 Well, under some definitions, human societies could be described as being united by a hive mind. In the biological or sociological sense anyway, not in the fantasy-ish, science fiction-ish type of way it's usually depicted in media ^^ Basically, a real hive mind (as in : those we find in reality), such as those that operate ant colonies (though technically these aren't hive mind at all, hive mind is supposed to apply to human societies) are based on individuals being connected through chemical signaling (in the case of ants) or other types of signal, which allows them to sense their environment and react to it in unisson through simple basic rules. A notorious example of how this work is in the case of pathfinding, where a column of ants will find the shortest/fastest path to a food source by simply laying down recruiting pheromones along the way. With each passage, the signal becomes stronger, and since the fastest route is the one where the most passage can be achieved in the least amount of time, the path the fastest path will soon be the one where the chemical track will be the strongest, thus recruiting the most ants, etc. And we humans aren't that different, it's just that we don't use pheromones to communicate where the food, or mates, is/are, we use verbal and nonverbal communications, and we inform ourselves on what others are doing. The market is a great example of how this work : some humans find something they like, so they buy it, more of it can be produced and at a cheaper price, thus more humans can buy it, and you have a feedback loop until the maximum number of humans that want that product bought it, at which point the market reach peak efficiency. Well, that's the theory anyway. Point is : if you want an example of how a hive mind would work if individuals were... Well, individuals, just look at humans, that's basically it. Take the most gregarious humans, if your typical western individualist human isn't enough ant-like for you.

@@InchonDM well if we go with media you CAN do that in the paradox rpg 4x stellaris if you get advanced enough bio tech you can seperate drones from the hive mind turning them into indivduals

Hydrogen One i mean the star union’s tyranically logic made sense. Having a hivemind race on your side is a MASSIVE boost to your military might. Its why in my fantasy novel im working the hivemind race has an overwhelming power over economics and politics. Why even bother with slavery when you can just buy off a army of workers from them? And when you actually have that hivemind race under your control, even better.

@@alaskarii007 It was an idea I had for a "peaceful" Necrophage faction in endless was this subgroup had access to so much dust that they believed their usual goal of consuming everything through war was inefficient, better to threaten to serve as laborers, hardy merchants and processors of the dead that can take anything of value and sell it back to you. Cities fearing that their weapons and supplies being sold to enemies, nobles who bought these peaceful and seemingly docile necrophages had workers who could sustain themselves aligned with them, towns that relied on unruly masses for labor bought the service of the necrophages as strikebreakers and ate the mob that resorted to violence to chase them out. It was a brutally effective technique as they were guaranteed to never go hungry.

It follows the same formula that 40k created and Starcraft popularised, and it does it in a sufficiently interesting way that it isn't entirely forgettable.

Considering 40k's biotech species are a bunch of ravenous drones with no concept of anything except expanding the hive by stripping worlds bare of all life, I don't know what you're talking about.
