It's not *that* weird. Sparring with medieval swords, spears etc is a real hobby called HEMA, it's similar to fencing but often less competitive and with a greater variety of historical weaponry. It's not even out of the question that the victim really was a HEMA practitioner and that's why they used that as a cover story.

Uhhhh no if he was poor he would have gotten bail but he just wouldn’t have been able to afford it. Not the same as being held without the option of bail. Also, I’m absolutely not saying that the wealthy don’t get better outcomes in court lots of times due to their ability to hire better attorneys (and pay for expensive tests, expert witnesses, investigators etc) bc that is most definitely true. However, your last sentence seems like it’s implying that you will always get to go home on bail if you are wealthy and can pay big money. That’s definitely not true. There are tons of instances of wealthy people who are arrested for serious offenses that carry a potential life sentence are held without bail. Regardless of a person’s wealth the judge will definitely hold you without bail if the person was caught red handed committing murder/high level drug trafficking/racketeering or any other serious felony. If you know that there is a 99.99% chance of you being convicted and the minimum sentence is like 25 years I think most people, if given bail, would go on the run bc there is no reason to stick around. Either way you are going to be in prison essentially the rest of your life. Sometimes it’s actually HARDER for a rich guy to get a judge to agree to bail because of the much higher chance of a successful escape. Same goes for dual citizens or foreign nationals bc it’s very easy for them, compared to an avg American, to flee the country.

Money and connections, which usually go hand-in-hand. Personal wealth isn't always required, but knowing rich/influential/powerful people and groups is just as good, if not better.
