Dame Kiri is by no means "voiceless"! Having seen( and heard) her in recital not too long ago, I can say that her voice has changed a bit, but certainly NOT for the worst. If you read her interview in Opera News, you would know that she was deliberately keeping things light and funny because she realized that she had a tiny, cameo role and she did not want to detract from the the true leading roles. Thanks so much for posting this!

I was lucky enough to hear this first hand on the opening night. The most wonderful thing was that her voice rang throught the auditorium, seemingly effortlessly. Bliss.

What is this I am reading? First of all, to those like me who have heard Kiri in recital and preformance, she hasnt lost that easy way her voice fills the room. Second, by her own admition, Spanish and German are not her strongest languages and finally, WIH did you expect from her...1982 or something? Technically and vocally, KTK can still hold her own with those 1/2 her age and will be singing long after those kids leave the stage! Brava Kiri!

I saw her in recital not long ago and she was hardly voiceless. She still has the creamy instantly recognizable sound. She has taken very good of her voice and is proving that one can sing for a very long time if one sings with excellent technique and is careful to sing the right stuff.

Wow... that was just great. I'm argentinian and that was an argentinian song written by Ginastera: El arbol del olvido Her pronouciation is not that good, but I can't help loving her... She sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing this

@Gav640 And I was there too...from the parterre when she sang this melody starting from 2:39-on the sound was incredibly warm and round. Not voiceless in any way.

@renzo0510 Living in Texas we hear a lot of Ginastera espically here in the Dallas Opera. Kiri's Spanish was never that great but she does give it a good try. She (and Leontyne) sound amazing still! I thank you for a great comment on Ginastera and KTK. Love her here in the Big D as well. Thanks for posting.

@Drelnis I tried to DVR it but it came in scrambled and unplayable. I guess one must put a camera in front of a telecast and record it that way. The radio broadcasts I just place in a disc and record from the hard drive on my laptop using the local classical radio station's internet gadget. I think that the Met itself sells the previous season's telecast in DVD/Blu-ray but I am not sure. Hope that wasnt confusing?

@marioegorga Have to agree with you about her Spanish!!! When I first heard the song on the Kiri & Karl CD, that was my first objection...and it is not a flirtatious poem, but rather inward and reflective. Great song, but wonder about its use in this opera, too. Doesn't really work for me on any level...except for her vocal beauty.

@33blueberries. I have heard singers with wobbles so bad that it sounds like they are trilling on every note. I certainly have never heard anything from Dame Kiri.

What the heck was she doing that was making so many people laugh? I don't know that I would describe her as "voiceless". Maybe "thin-voiced", but that is to be expected at her age.
