I don't know why everyone downs Kirk so much. I give him and his solos full credit of me becoming a shredding lead guitarist for over 25 years. All my first solos i played was Kirk solos. After a while I started studying everyone else also. Kirk was the gateway guitarist for me.

Kirk is the reason i picked up a guitar. I was 5 years old when my older brother showed me metallica, and i fell in love with the band and especially Kirk's playing style. That same year i got my first electric guitar for christmas, and the first thing i learnt was Nothing Else Matters. He is my hero, and i can't imagine Metallica without him.

I was visiting a friend in San Francisco, some time in the 90's and Kirk and I passed each other on the sidewalk. As we moved past each other, I remember thinking, "Hmm... That's Kirk Hammett. He's got to be somewhere, so I guess he may as well be here." I didn't want to bother him, I just kept walking. What a close call.

i was once in a Metallica wannabe band way back in 95 too and was exactly in the same spot as good ol Kirk, coz i wanted to be like him and my leader wanted to be James. Well i guess we even took on the same persona and i also had trouble nailing the tricky riff down and my ‘James’ was gonna punch my lights out. I left eventually. Kirk’s a legend in his own right.

Kirk Hammett is a complete amazingly brilliant guitarist who makes each and every song that Metallica writes just that much more awesome but I can't help but wonder how Metallica would have sounded like if they didn't fire Dave Mustaine and if Cliff Burton didn't die so tragically in that tour bus accident? Personally I think that Dave Mustaine is a better guitarist than Hammett is they both have very different styles of playing but I believe that Mustaine is just a bit more creative with leads than Kirk is for example the solo that Mustaine rips in Holy Wars is in my humble opinion about the best lead solo of all the heavy metal songs from that era
