Hi, welcome to this free Altium Designer Tutorial for Beginners series. I'm using version 20.2.5
• Altium Designer PCB De...
===== Summary =======
We're building the Sparkfun Electronics PCB design found here:
www.sparkfun.com/products/12711
It's a Lithium Polymer single cell battery charger. As per their description
If you need to charge LiPo batteries, this simple charger will charge 3.7V LiPo cells at 500mA or 100mA.
The PCB incorporates a charging circuit, status LED, selectable solder jumper for 500mA or 100mA charging current, external LED footprint, and we're using micro-USB instead of mini-USB.
===== Projects in Altium =============
Creating projects in Altium Designer 20 is easy as ever, using 'sheets' and 'documents' to create schematic, printed circuit board, and even part and footprint libraries.
The main things to understand are the files and what their purposes are:
Here are the main things you'll learn below:
- how to create a project file - the project file contains and links all files together for a complete PCB design. That includes the schematic, PCB, parts libraries and professional drawings and so much more. You can have free documents outside of your project and you can have multiple projects in the same Project panel.
Projects
When starting a new Altium project, you can make it a single PCB project that's stored locally, in the cloud or on a server of your choice.
Schematics
After you've made a project, you can make a schematic. A circuit schematic shows the high level plan for an electronic design. it can be later turned into a breadboard project or a printed circuit board (PCB). In this tutorial series we'll make a PCB, since it's more compact and Altium is designed for that.
PCB
There's a separate PCB document file (.PCBDoc) that contains the printed circuit board design. This is the mechanical part of the circuit (electronic devices, 3D bodies, etc.), where you can perform routing, part placement, constraints, design for manufacturing, signal integrity analysis and so on, depending on your design. For our project we'll focus on just the PCB layout process.
Part Libraries
We set up a schematic part library (.SchLib) for schematic symbols and a PCB part library (.PCBLib) for PCB footprints to attach to those schematic symbols. Without part libraries to hold our parts, we won't have anything to put on the schematic or PCB. Having the right parts make everything come together so easily. But part selection is no easy task, so in this series, I show you 4 ways you can find or create parts to put them on your schematic.
Who this tutorial series is for
Anyone who is using an ECAD software tool, like Cadence Allegro/OrCAD, Mentor Graphics PADS/Xpedition, KiCAD, Autodesk EAGLE, or even Altium (20 or previous versions). Makers, hobbyists, Arduino enthusiasts.

Kirsch, Thank you very much for this great series. We have a lot of university students working in our research group who are very excited about Altium, electronics and PCB design. Unfortunately I am pretty busy at the moment and can't devote the full time needed to teach them myself, so I was really looking for a good video series to help them get started. This is great, and even better because it is up to date with a recent Altium release. This is a great reference and is very helpful for a lot of people! Thank you.

@@techedkirschEE Will do, thank you for the information. Altium has a student license which is available for students with a university email which might be worth mentioning in addition to the trial version. It is renewable every 6 months while they are a student and is full featured from what I understand. Keep up the good work!

@@techedkirschEE Only a few reasons but they are pretty critical. Also, I learnt Altium first so kind of have a biased opinion. 1) 3D modeling; 2) PCB design rule setup; 3) variants and output jobs; 4) creepage and air clearance in AD20 is available, especially in Medical industry when you have high voltage in system. I am dealing with >1000V in the system. Hope it helps.
