Great tutorial and very clear informative instructions. I’ve done more CP than pastel but the idea of sharpening less appeals!!! (Oops just realised I need to switch accounts as not using my pers one!) :)

Hi Kirsty, this is so lovely. I really enjoy your art, you create some very beautiful work. I was wondering what tool you were using with the pan pastels in your initial layers in this one? The Sofft tools all have blue handles apart from the sponges or the tiny "eye shadow applicator type" one.

Thankyou, I'm glad you are enjoying the tutorials! It is a Sofft tool (it's called an applicator) but mine is an older one with a wooden handle - they've since changed the colour to red I believe! This is the link to show you what I'm talking about 😊 panpastel.com/applicators.html It's basically the same as the little eyeshadow Sofft tools but with a longer stick and replaceable heads!

@@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Thanks Kirsty, I have quite a lot of Pan pastels and Sofft tools and sponges but didn't know about this applicator tool. Another handy tool, the longer handle on those little applicators should make using them easier, more like holding a brush or pencil.

Beautiful pastel work!! Your art skills are wonderful. Some things I noted were 4.5 inches = 11.5cm (been metric for 50 years), also ''tones' is Australian and 'values' American. Are you an Aussie living in the US? TFS!!

Thankyou 😊 Haha no I'm an Aussie living in Australia, but most of my audience is American so I tend to use some American terminology, but my Aussie usually comes out so it's varied! Haha Plus, I usually try and keep my artwork in standard photo sizes/print sizes which is inches, so I usually write the size in inches on all of my work because it keeps it consistent

I see you have put a number on your pencil why is that? Do you have a tip about values? Do you posterize your reference photo for the right values?
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 4 жыл бұрын
I used to open a new set of pencils and number them, so when I was done using them I could put them back in the same order that they came in in the box haha But I have way too many sets of pencils to worry about that now... they're definitely not kept in order any more! The most useful tip I have for values is to take a photo of your artwork and turn it into black and white, and do the same with your reference and compare the two. That way you can easily see if your darks are as dark as the reference photo without the distraction of colour! No, I don't really have an edit of the reference photo specifically for values actually.. for me, I don't really struggle that much with values anymore but I know a lot of people do, which is why the previous tip is very useful :)
