Paul Stanley should have been an R and B singer. He basically shows here that he really is a Soul Singer. He could sing any Motown song and kill it. His voice is amazing and so is his range and on most of their songs, it's wasted.

They even did a Slow Ballad, Co-written by their Original Drummer, Peter Criss. It's called "Beth" and even though Peter was replaced in the 80's, the band still performs this song using the current drummer. IT IS SO WORTH A REACTION!

This song was Kiss' little stab at making a rock song with a touch of disco. They released it close to the end of the disco era. From the late 70s to the mid 80s, Gene Simmons, the bassist (persona of a demon, sticks his tongue out a lot), dated Cher and then Diana Ross. You are going to do well with your channel, Angela! You have a beautiful face, meant to be seen and you also have a great voice, perfect for commentary!!

Their debut album (imaginatively called KISS) is fantastic, with the first song - Strutter - being a particular favourite. I really like this track, their dip into disco turned out really well. That bassline is so addictive.

The makeup: Paul (lead singer/guitarist) explained that they wanted to do something different that really stood out...something *they* wanted to see themselves on stage. Groups were beginning to experiment with makeup, but Kiss wanted to take it to a whole new, mega-theatrical level. Thank goodness they also happened to make some great music to go with it.

Yes, very "soft" song, for a band given its image. Got the top of charts, disco vibe-rock blend, from 1979 Dynasty album, with the session drummer Anton Fig replacing the original Peter Criss who sang and played only one song of that album. By the way the ballad "Beth" and the beautiful lyrics from "Hard Luck Woman" they were performed by Peter, The Cat Man. Both remarkable, as well.

The make-up and costumes are due to their start in NYC in the "Glam Rock" times where being outrageous was the only way to be noticed(tons of great musicians never got anywhere professionally),the blood spitting and fire shows are other examples of the theatrics of that time

There was a period of time in the mid to late 70s where it was a whole thing like "what do they look like without the makeup on??" and they did their best to avoid being seen or photographed without the makeup on. A clever marketing ploy, adding some mystery to a band is always a good thing.

Check out their song "Forever" if you like love songs. :) The official version and orchestral concert versions are both pretty good.

The Makeup was their "Schtick" back then... for over 10 years they refused to be photographed without the makeup, so when they did it, the world freaked out! Gene was even Dating Cher so the paparazzi had problems... Cher loved having her pics taken, forcing Gene to wear Face Masks everywhere! They put the makeup and outfits back on for some concerts due to popular demand. It tells the Audience there's going to be Bigger Explosions, Spitting Blood/Fire and High Energy!

On the one hand, you're not wrong about them being most known for their harder, more traditionally "rock" songs - "Detroit Rock City" would be a good one to check out for that sound. But on the other hand, for all the success and notoriety the band had, they only ever had one song to actually make it to #1 on the charts -- a soft, romantic ballad called "Beth".
