Bruce Kulick are such a great guitarist. His playing on Carnival of Souls - The Final Sessions from 1997 was so exceptional. The most heavy Kiss album ever. Didn't get the credit it deserved. This was a phenomenal concert. It was recorded for a Live VHS tape titled Animalize - Live Uncensored. I was fortunate enough to see the warmup to this. KISS played in Saginaw Michigan the night before this. It was my first concert when I was 15 years old. My step dad took me and my brother as a birthday present to me. It was awesome 😎 The drum solo, by Eric Carr, prior to this song, kicked a## and was especially incredible 😱 to me because I am a drummer also. Hearing him was amazing enough but seeing him blew my mind 😮😮😮😮. Gene, at age 74 today, still did the fire torch, to War Machine, on the End of the Road tour this year. There will never be a band who puts on a show like KISS 💋.

Kiss stated with the makeup for over a decade, then took it off in "83" for the Lick it up album. They left it off for many years, then started doing concerts with it back on. With, or without the makeup Kiss was a great band, and put on the best show ever! I saw them twice, blew my mind both times!

Kiss in the 70s were super heroes. They never revealed their face. Literally covering it up in interviews and when they were in the public. This was the first live show on tvwith out the make up. It was also how I was introduced to kiss as a kid. Eric carr is a phenom I think it's funny how alot of kiss fans and folks think kiss isn't talented To write that many songs To sing in harmony and the vocal technique used To be acrobatic and play is unreal Kiss is absolutely one of the most underrated and talented bands of all time

Maybe an unpopular opinion: but my favorite KISS era has for a long time been 81-86. Classic, 80’s hard rock albums produced during that period. 5 studio albums and 1 comp album. That’s the KISS I grew up with, that’s the KISS I believe could also use some more appreciation and acknowledgment from the KISS fan community.

Cobo Hall where this was filmed is like a 12,000 seat place. Find some video of them playing in Brazil on the Creatures of the Night tour if you want to see a 200,000 seat soccer stadium full.

This clip is from the Animalize tour 1984. Kiss exists since late 1973 and they always wore makeup til the early 80ies. In fact my first ever vinyl LP was Kiss Alive II from 1977. BTW if I'm not wrong, Gene Simmons now is the 70-year-old demon, so that's a loooooong carreer! Greets from Germany as always! This is my favorite Kiss lineup. Stanley, Simmons, Carr (RIP) and Kulick. Kulick wasn't a member in 1984 but replacing Mark St John (another RIP) who couldn't tour due to illness.

KISS last concert in makeup June 1983, this concert is Cobo Hall 1984...18 months later.

KISS wore the makeup and costumes for the first 9/10 years of the band - approx 1973-1983, removed after the Creatures Album and then went on to release Lick it Up. They had various line up changes between 1980-1996 when the original 4 reunited following the MTV unplugged era and again put the costumes back on for the reunion tour - and they haven’t taken it off again despite some more line up changes since then. You can watch the ‘unmasking’ of KISS on MTV where they were revealed to the world for the first time for everyone to see back in 1983. Although, they did get tricked into taking a photo back in 1974 (I think) for an article for Cream Magazine

This song was from 1982's Creatures Of The Night album, the last in make-up. It was a very heavy album but after a disco, bubble gum pop, and then a concept album that consecutively that turned a lot of fans away, most people didn't care about this album or tour. They were playing to maybe half full venues even though Eric's drum kit was on a huge tank turret that fired actual tank blanks. That's a big reason they took off the make-up, for the free publicity. They revealed themselves live on MTV and it drew huge ratings. The marketing worked and KISS was relevant once more. This performance was from the Animalize tour, Bruce's 1st with KISS (hadn't even played on a record yet). My only problem with the performance is the song is sped up too much and loses some of its oomph. Eric was an absolute beast on the drums and is one of the best drummers to have ever lived.

History: Kiss started 1972 (not sure but I know I’m close) with the makeup! Paul Stanley (Star Child) on Rhythm Guitar Gene Simmons (the Demon) on Bass, Ace Frehley (Spaceman) Lead Guitar, Peter Kris (Catman) on Drums. They struggled for fame with the first 3 albums: “Kiss” , “Hotter Than Hell”, “Dressed to Kill”. Then their first live album “Kiss Alive” (1975) made them super famous. The next studio album, Destroyer needed to kick ass following up “Alive” and it did! It had bangers like “Detroit Rock City”, “Shout it Out Load”, “God of Thunder” and the classic balled “Beth”. The next Album “Rock and Roll Over” rocked really hard with more great songs. The sixth studio album “Love Gun” was my first Kiss album, another classic. The “Alive II” (1977), came out featuring only songs from the aforementioned three albums that followed the first live album. The band was at the peak of what some call the classic kiss era. Then came the legendary Kiss single albums in which each of the four members record a solo album with other musicians of their choice. All four were released simultaneously. Paul, Gene and Peter were all great lead singers in Kiss with Ace not doing any lead vocals until “Shock Me” on the “Love Gun” album. So, it was a big surprise when Ace’s album was clearly best of the solos! That same year, Van Halen released their first album which IMO was the best of the year for hard rock. AC/DC was tearing through the Bon Scott era. So when Kiss’ 7th Studio album “Dynasty” was released, the Kiss hype had cooled off a bit. All this time the public had never seen Kiss without their makeup, making them able to walk the streets anonymously. .Eventually Peter left the band and was replaced by Eric Carr (the Fox). This makes Peter the first member of the band to be seen by the public without the makeup. About a year later Ace takes off his makeup and leaves the band replaced by Vince Vincent ( The Ankh Warrior). Then finally, in 1983, the then current band members of Kiss appear on MTV. without the costumes and makeup. They would go on to release several more albums, and make a few more personnel changes always maintaining the quartet formula from 1983 to 1995; and Paul and Gene stood firm. When the the current lineup of Kiss performed on MTV unplugged they invited original members to sit in and play a few classics. Paul and Gene felt the “old magic” and noticed that the crowd was very excited about the original lineup playing together again. This inspired a surprise appearance with the original four members with full costume and make on the 1996 MTV awards. This was followed by a reunion tour bringing back the spectacle of the 70’s to the turn of the millennium. The original four continued to tour until 2000 when Peter and Ace parted from the band once again. Since then Paul an Gene continued to tour in full dress; but with different players as the Spaceman and the cat man.

KISS ERAS: 1st Make Up Era: 1973- 1983 (Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley & Peter Criss are the original line up) Non make up era: 1983-1996 2nd make up era: 1996- to the present. There have been 10 members of the band in total, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are the founders and they have always remained in it from the beginning until today.

Kiss wasn't about the music as much as the performance. But in my opinion they killed both.

Peter left the band in 1980 replaced by Eric Carr seen in this video, Ace left the band in 1982 the band went thru two other guitarist before hiring Bruce Kulick seen in this video, they took the make up off from 83 to 96 when the reunited with Criss and Frehley for a reunion putting back on the makeup. Since then Criss/Frehley left the band again but they kept the makeup on and their current lineup is: Simmons/Stanley/Eric Singer on drums/Catman makeup and Tommy Thayer lead guitar/Spaceman makeup. Was at this show. I think I’m appreciating even more now. Believe it or not, Diana Ross was backstage at this show. I remember seeing her off stage dancing with Paul while Gene was out front doing his bass guitar solo. For a little while, Gene and Diana were an item. Most people at the show were surprised that the guitarist was Bruce Kulik. The album they were supporting for this tour (Animalize) had a guitarist name Mark St. John (his actual name, Mark Norton) but Mark had a horrible recurrence of Reiter’s syndrome, a condition in which his hands became severely swollen. Even more sadly, Mark Saint John eventually passed away. Bruce Kulik what is the main guitarist for the mass majority of the KISS without make up days and he really kicked ass as a stand in for this show even though nobody knew who the F he was. Actually Bruce’s older brother, Bob Kulick, was second in line to be in KISS, but Ace Frehley won out. Bob, actually played a few solos on the studio side of KISS Alive 2, and also was the lead guitarist for Paul Stanley’s 1978 solo album.

Lick It Up was the album they took their makeup off and revealed themselves. That featured Vinnie Vincent from the Creatures of the Night (Ace's replacement as lead guitarist) and Eric Carr (Peter Criss's replacement as drummer). That was in 82?/83?. My dad would know. Then we had Mark St. John replace Vinnie. And then St. John got sick with a disease in his hands and Bruce Kulick (lead guitarist here) take over. Bruce has been part of the band behind the scenes for a while now and was introduced by his brother, the late Bob Kulick. Who also did behind the scenes with KISS.

I saw Kiss first Time in 1980 in Germany. First time Eric on drums never vorgott, he cries after being honored by the fans after playing 100000 Years. They started in Make-up. The animalize tour was the beginning of the unmasked Area. Later they go back to the roots with Make-up and Costumes. Every concert is I saw was a great event that blows your mind. KISS debut album was around 1975, they came out wearing makeup, they even made sure nobody ever seen them without makeup so nobody knew what they really looked like. In 1983, after Ace Frehley and Peter Criss left the band, KISS had low album sales, and low attendance at concerts. To get on MTV KISS took off their makeup. In 1996, KISS did a reunion tour with the original band, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, Peter Criss. They toured for about 6 years when Ace Frehley left the band, they replaced him with Tommy Thayer, wearing the same makeup. Later, Peter Criss, they let his contact run out because they weren't getting along with him, and rehired Eric Singer who wears Peter Criss Catman makeup.

Kiss from 73 to 83 had make up...no one knew who they were...kept their identities a secret...then from 83 to 95 no make up kiss....96 to present....make up....the 70's kiss was a phenom.

This was a new arrangement. They speeded it up somewhat. And the video is post-face paint of the 1970's.

KISS did the makeup because they wanted to be the band they always wanted to see. Plus it allowed them to become characters. For Paul who was very self-conscious, it allowed him to become the rock god we know. And in the '70s their manager got the idea for them never to be photographed without their makeup so it was a mystique.

I'm glad y'all got to see that video it was I think back in the 90s maybe a mid-90s they made that song with the makeup as it was. They were trying to go for a different look because they had different members music was changing and they were trying to change with it a little bit. The makeup came in back in the early 1970s it looked different the way you see it now. Basically the same just over time the makeup designs evolved should I say. They put the makeup back on when Ace and Peter joined back in with the band back in early 2000 I'll believe it was when they made the album psycho circus and you can watch that video watch the video cycle circus and watch them the official video. They said it one time they would never take the makeup off and that was I think back in the latter eighties, but anyway they did take it all everybody got to see what they look like and everything. Personally I wish they'd kept the makeup on because it kept not only with the mystery but with the kiss that everybody knew to begin with. Just my own opinion. Glad y'all enjoyed that video because I enjoy watching kiss myself.

Let me help you with the *KISS* timeline, because it is a bit confusing if you don't know the band very well... KISS was formed in 1973 and wore the makeup until 1983 (...during that time period, the band members actually refused to be photographed w/o makeup, they wanted to maintain the "mystique") ...The makeup stayed OFF until 1996, that is when all four original members reunited for the mega-successful, worldwide "Reunion Tour"... After two members left the band...got fired.....they were becoming very stale, and sales were terrible, so around the late 80's they took it off and released Lick it Up. After several years of decent sales, and interest, they were approached by MTV to do an Unplugged episode, then some other things happened and it ended up with all 4 original members on stage for the first time in many years. They then put the makeup back on and went on a Reunion Tour. The same two guys got fired/quit again....and the last two guys that had taken their place now wear the same makeup and costumes.

Um, they took their makeup off in either ‘83 or ‘84, the greasepaint, and didn’t put the makeup back on until when Ace Frehley and Peter Criss rejoined for the reunion tour in 1996.
