Excellent video and ideas. One thing you might consider in grizzly country is a pistol lanyard. If the bear charges you out of a brush and makes contact you, it could possibly knock the pistol from your hand. With a lanyard you can pull it back to you and make some noise. I am in black bear country but I still wear a lanyard.

Good info. Also consider some style of double edged blade if bear knocks you to the ground, pistol off to side. A back up to a back up system. In similar, when leaving the dock, take two oars rather than one.

yup, building a mock alice gear setup right now, Modern belt and suspenders, old alice triple mag pouch (with alice to molle adapter) with the grenade pouches removed for a sleeker fit, GP pouches for some water bottles, trying to come up with a modern equivalent for the buttpack, if i cant find one i will just adapterize an Alice one onto my belt. Apparently the shift away from belt based equipment to chest rig placed equipment is mainly due to most troops riding in vehicles these days, as that does not apply to me and i value the ability to be prone more than the ability to ride comfortably in a vehicle im going with the old school inspired setup.

I enjoyed the video and I subscribed a long time ago. I’m a 1970s USAF Sgt. I realize the military doesn’t want to go back to gear that dismounted infantry used in the past for several wars, but the Brits have perfected the use of a suspenders and belt rig that allows for the addition of body armor over it and a assault or rucksack to also be worn. I think the way you have your kit arranged is darn near perfect, but on the negative you are not carrying additional Squad ammo like LMG, 40 Mike Mike, claymore, hand grenades, or smokes. I’ve worn ALICE, MOLLE, Chest rigs, and plate carriers and all have place. But a belt and suspenders rig is the most comfortable. Eagle Industries has a good suspenders and belt rig out. My suspenders and belt rig is extremely simple. My M56 canvas H suspenders are attached directly to a Condor pistol belt with para cord, for comfort and adjust ability. I do not use a buttpack. I use 3 MOLLE SAW pouches, 3 MOLLE general purpose Canteen pouches ( one for bigger IFAK and two Tourniquets) and the other two for 2 Canteens, 2Cups, 1 natick stove, and eating utensils), a quad side by side Mag holder for 4-AR30 rds magazines, and an over sized rifle pouch ( that can hold 2 or 3 AR mags or two AK mages, or Issued radio), one compass pouch for compass and one sewed to canteen pouch for a multi tool. If SAW pouches not needed for Squad gear, NVGs, or hand grenades or smokes, than extra personal ammo or kit can be added. Like a poncho or a Gortex Jacket or Gortex pants will fit in a SAW pouch. A small 20 liter pack is added for a patrol or overnight.

3:04 remember the utility of plastic hip flask style bottles. Stanley makes a few as does Coughlan’s. 500-750ml range. The kidney shaped flat approach often works well to supply hydration without the ever-nagging ergonomics nightmare of “pulling away” or down from one’s core load out. Something I recently experienced during experimentation with fanny pack/butt pack loads: without Y or H harnesses they naturally pull away from the lumbar or abdominal region. Waters the main culprit. Or loaded mags.

Good vid, thanks! I like not having a lot of stuff on my back because I tend to get very hot. Plus where I'm at, the humidity is often 90%+. I like belt rigs for that reason, but my rig won't hold as much stuff as yours. If you dropped some of your gear in the front pouch to a belt, would that let you get flatter when going prone? Also, in bear country I think that I'd want my pistol in a set up that let me get to it much faster.

What are you using for hearing protection with this setup? I’d imagine using something like Peltor Comtac’s would be ideal for radio communication. Standard foam inserts are fine but then you lose the ambient audio that some electronic headsets allow for. Curious to hear your thoughts.

I do use peltor comtac 3s sometimes if i will be doing a lot of com work. But I prefer to use the Surefire EP4s 90% of the time.. Small , lightweight, reasonably cheap, and you can still hear most ambient sounds around you. If you need to listen very intently, I just pop them out.

Based on the name of the video, it seems more like it serves the purpose of a quick to don, self contained kit. Throw it over your head, grab your rifle and go. Then again, we don't see what's on his waist, but, it seems like a 10mm auto loader should handle anything you need a pistol for. But like you said, it may be for the purpose of keeping light an agile, or that may just be a perk.

I have used several LBEs before, and I haven't found one that works well for me. Can they work? Of course, they are a good system if outfitted properly. It doesn't bother me too much. Absolutely, I agree you should have a carrier and armor. I have one setup as well, but it is used in a different context. I use a carrier with armor in more of a defensive aspect. Neighborhood protection or stationary security. If I am maneuvering over terrain long distance, I will not use a plate carrier due to the weight and fitment with a ruck on.

newbie but just from a spinal side of the things shouldn't you relief some of the weight from your back by distributing at least half of the weight on your weist belt rather then everting weight on your back that for sure is going to wear you faster and not to mention and back pain that most people over 30 have especially if you tried stupid sports or fall hard biking.

It's mainly what you are comfortable with. This kit weighs 13lbs, which realistically is very heavy at all. My Active Duty plate carrier that I use on a daily bases is 30lbs, so 13 is very easy to manage. If you move stuff to a battle belt it is extremely difficult to use a sustainament pack.

Yes, I use a small assault style pack for NODs, thermal, water, wet/cold weather gear, socks, batteries, and other items in conjunction with this. It's just not shown in this video. If I did show this, the video would be extremely long. Is that what you are referring to?

Too much stuff. You might have gone training, but you haven’t gone to war in your kit. But maybe it’s good enough for survival, quick firefight and get out.

This is an extremely slimed down kit from what I was carrying in Afghanistan for almost a year... Ultimately, it would be METTTC that would determine. Could you reference a sustained operation that you carried anything less than 7 mags, water, comm gear, snacks, and an Ifak? (And that doesn't even contain mission required gear).

You are in the US, who are you getting ready to attack? What about the other hundred pounds of gear you recommend?

OK, but where does it stop? You gonna carry around a spare Barrett .50? Really, to get much better than a 10mm, it'd be a revolver, but then round capacity would be limited. So, what are your suggestions? He's carrying a rifle already, that's a good start.

@@thewatcher611 there are many choices, but you could start with a 300 WinMag that should do the trick

@patriotordinance9695 the minuteman setup is not 100% focused on bear defense. Sure if he was hunting bear it'd make more sense to equip for that occasion, remember his purpose

Tarp, shotgun. You are obviously a child. When you need gear, you don't have skill.

If you think an Active Duty combat vet doesn't have any skill, you just pissed off a lot of veterans in the country lol
