An SOL kit but packed classy for Father's Day or Christmas. Still, hella classy packaging compared to the field it's competing with.

You should review Les Stroud's survival kit. He did a review himself but I always enjoy another persons opinion. Especially since it's in your wheelhouse. If memory serves me right, he has 2 different kinds, for single person and multiple persons.

Redunancy is always a benefit in survival kits. The benefit of having both the spark wheel and the ferro rod, is that the spark wheel can be operated with a single hand, so if you injured one of your hands or arms, you can still make a fire.
@Jakoshdw
@Jakoshdw 11 ай бұрын
True... but they cheaped out on the tinder. Including the spark wheel is nearly useless without a tinder than can actually catch those cooler sparks. If I recall correctly... those spark wheels are usually paired with Tinderquik tabs. Used correctly that pairing can light quite a few fires as you can just tease out a little fluff at the end of a tab... spark it to flame... and use that flame to ignite your tinder before extinguishing the tab to use the rest later. They could have included a small amount of charcloth instead which honestly could be produced incredibly cheaply with scrap 100% cotton material. As is... not sure a birds nest of the jute twine they included could catch those sparks. Your average person given this kit isn't likely to know how to find and process tinder fungus. If all you had was this kit as is... you'd need to figure out how to make and save some char material from your first fire.
@Eidolon1andOnly
@Eidolon1andOnly 11 ай бұрын
@@Jakoshdw That jute twine can definitely catch those sparks just fine. This is definitely just a basic kit and more of a launch pad to work from to better customize it. My biggest issue with this and the SOL kit is the way the case is molded adds a lot of bulk at the expense of usable space. Having that custom mold to hold the knife, compass, and spark wheel seems like a good idea on paper since you don't have to open the kit to use the light for example, and you have the knife, compass, whistle, and light easily accessible, which would likely be the most used items in the first hours of being lost and in need of rescue (by yourself or from others). But those specialized slots can't carry anything else so there's just a lot of odd bulk that serves nothing but a very specific purpose. By removing all that fancy molded slot stuff, and simply making a plain box, and putting all those items inside that box, you'd have a box which could be made to the exact same dimensions, yet have a larger internal volume and storage capacity, which would allow you to pack more items inside of the box.

Good stuff Eric. I always thought that the SOL kit was a little pricey and although this is slightly inferior it is much more affordable. You could get a batch of these and give them as gifts. Also, as you said a few times, they are 'Better than nothing'.
@boek2777
@boek2777 11 ай бұрын
Misunderstand me right 😇 Anything is better than nothing but I would prefer a reusable/thick mylar blanket over a dozen of these kits. In different climates, you obviously need different equipment. I live in southernmost Sweden so a flashlight and knife might come in handy but a compas is wasted space for me. I have a package (actually several that I can give to my friends if needed). They contain a reflective 4 point belt (around your waist and over your shoulders) and the cheapest Mora knife in existence (about $2 each). A store sold flexible belly bags for $2 each so I bought some and filled them with different stuff I had at home. The Water filter was the most expensive thing but I managed to get a rebate since I bought 20. If portability or look is the most important thing, I have failed. If local usebility is prioritized, I'm close to perfection.

Earlier this week I accidentally stabbed my hand with a sak blade and severed an artery. I was just sharpening it at home so luckily I was able to get to hospital. But I needed the artery to be tied off, the wound stitched and 2 blood transfusions. All caused by a small blade. It convinced me that every survival kit should aim to have quality haemostatic items to stop bleeding. A trauma tourniquet should also be in every kit.

@TrangleC
@TrangleC 11 ай бұрын
Don't get me wrong, but I don't really see what for you would need such survival gear in the UK anyways. Much to my chagrin where I live (Germany) there is basically no spot on the map where you are further than a 1 hour walk away from civilization and wherever that might be, you will be surrounded by bicyclists and hikers and agricultural infrastructure and farmers on their tractors and the such. As far as I know, it is pretty much the same in the UK. In most of Europe it is pretty much impossible to get lost. You'd have to go to Norway or somewhere like that to get yourself into a situation where a survival kit might actually be of use to you on European soil. The point being, wherever you could go where you might need such gear, you probably can get it legally when you get there. That said, whether it is needed or not should not be relevant. Wanting it should be reason enough for being able to get it in a free society and I strongly oppose weapon bans. I wish I could emigrate to the USA and live somewhere where you still have actual wilderness and places where you can at least in theory spend days without meeting someone else. Here I can't even walk the dog without having to jump out of the way of some bicyclist, tractor or car every 2 minutes.

@@TrangleC I know what you mean, but I love survival stuff, so I have thought of scenarios where it might be useful. For example, hiking in an area with no phone reception. If you just sprain an ankle you could be stuck alone quite easily. In that case it would be useful to have a torch, a mylar bivvy, and perhaps a means of making a hot drink while you wait for rescue, and possibly a whistle too. It may not be essential for survival, but it would ease the situation. Good luck in finding your wilderness 😊
@TrangleC

@@JUNIORK1974 Hehe, not sure if this is a friendly invitation or a veiled way of saying that I should get lost. Either way, I am too old and too useless (no valuable, rare skills) to get a green card and make a new life in the USA. Of course, I could sneak in over the southern border, as half the world seems to be doing at the moment, but that isn't my style, if you know what I mean. Besides, even if I would be enough of a low life to immigrate illegally, I would still not know what to do career-wise and how to find a job.
@TrangleC
@TrangleC 11 ай бұрын
@@nicolab2075 Yes, I was into the survival stuff too, which is why I am still subscribed to this channel, but my obsession died down a lot in recent years. For one, I am too aware of the fact that I most likely will never need the stuff, for the aforementioned reasons and even my fantasies about some "End of Civilization" scenario where I could be some lone survivor roaming the remnants of a crumbled civilization don't really work for me anymore the same way they used to. I guess it is just because I am old (45) and not in good shape and single without kids. Me surviving would be highly unlikely, even with the best gear and it also would be pretty pointless, hehe. Besides, I live like 1 mile away from one of the recently deactivated German nuclear power plants, so in a WW3 scenario, even with it being shut down, the Russians would probably still nuke it just to make sure it can't be reactivated again and because their missiles are not very accurate and nuclear power plants are hard, well protected targets, they would probably throw something big at it, which means the most likely scenario would be that I just wake up to being air fried in my bed one night and wouldn't even have the time to realize what is actually happening, let alone get the opportunity to stumble through the ruins for a few more days or weeks and die of radiation poisoning.

its kinda look like this - a client comes to a factory in china wishing to buy survival kits and factory gives a big price list which include great variety of survival kits. You choose the outer shell, you choose the colours and types of logo stamping, choose the contents of the kit. For a right price you can have your own kind of survival kit manufactured in China with you're own branding.

chances are Votagoo people just take the SOL survival kit with them when searching for factory in China, then just said something like this "we want this survival kit with our branding, our colour and let me see which parts or contents of the kit we can make cheaper" and viola, another suvival kit is born

I would like to see if you could kitbash this sucker to make it better. First off, I'd throw out the fishing line and put some 20 lb. spider wire fishing line in there with a couple of sinkers and a couple of barrel swivels with snap, and maybe a larger hook. I'd add a bit of KT tape, throw out that saw (b/c I have one on my SAK), impregnate that jute with wax (and add a couple of pieces), throw out the spark wheel (b/c I carry a bic lighter wrapped in 100mph tape in my pocket) and see if I could jam a small pair of tweezers in that slot, and add two more batteries for the penlight. Maybe try to fit in some micro cord (or kevlar cord) and a ceramic razor blade. Finally I'd ranger-band an emerg. blanket to the outside (use like four ranger bands b/c they're good fire extenders.

Anything in-between than meh call it a draw. Personally, I like this, sure it's not the best and what not but as a budget friendly "starter" or "growers" kit than one just finds. I believe any gear that 1 might have is better then the nothing and much better than just the desired thought of having. keep up the great content my friend.

I have the SOL version. I have similar suspicions that the same Chinese factory that made the kit for SOL back in the day likely makes the Votagoo. They probably obtained a license from SOL to continue manufacturing them under private labels on the condition they omit a few features to avoid consumer confusion. And I bet SOL's license from Buck Tildon for that pocket survival guide didn't permit private label versions to include it. I like your theory about old stock and the need to include fresh batteries. If that's correct, then it's likely the same underwhelming LED emitter as on the SOL version. Even 10 years ago, that LED flashlight was pretty anemic. On the other hand, the Votagoo is only a third of the SOL's current $80 price on Amazon. What about a follow-on video upgrading the Votagoo to give it comparable capability to SOL original? You said the case on the Votagoo is slightly taller than the SOL. Is there more room inside? I wonder if there's space for David Robert's Tiny Survival Guide, a few more fishing items and perhaps a thin mirror for signaling. In any case, excellent video review as always. It, like the SOL original, is a nifty little kit.

Weird! As you say, you gotta give 'em props for the truly lavish packaging and presentation. Maybe a fancy gift an aunt might give her Boy Scout nephew? As with the SOL they copied the main problem is that the little plastic case adds a lot of weight and bulk for very little actual capability. It's chunky enough that I can't imagine carrying it in my pocket all day, and while it's maybe "better than nothing" it doesn't look enough better to bother taking along. Still, nice presentation!

SOL is $80 and this kit is less than a third that throw a few extras in this kit and it would be the same as the SOL but yeah... looks like the same box may things come out of the same China Factory with different paint jobs sometimes different things like mirrors or bearings but basically the SAME I HATE those flashlights with push buttons! I like a real switch, that push button stuff is ON even when it is OFF! 1. You are likely to not ever have a good use of a wire saw. 2) a fishing kit may be a total waste depending on your location and depending the season at hand. 3) snare wire? Hugely overrated and usually by far too little in the kits to be sufficient for the number of snares realisticly needed. 3) 'better than nothing' is a weak argument if you have the possibility to make a choise beforehand. 4) a kit container not possible to use for general purpose storage and water boiling is sub optimal. 5) flash lights tends to be overrated and my experience is that it tends to relate to a fear for the dark...Yes, there may be special situations, but in general your eyes adapt well enough and you should avoid doing too much during the nigh anyways if possible. Too much risks and it is probably better to just try to sleep. 6) plastic mirrors are way less effective for long rage signals than glas mirrors, just try it...
