In this clip I install custom trim on the pantry cabinet and crown molding on all the cabinets in the kitchen. I also, over three days, repair and skim coat the walls in the kitchen.

It's almost impossible to match the same paint color as the cabinets. Great thinking on your part to use the molding to transition between cabinet and crown. Excellent work!!!!

FYI. U should seal the areas of drywall where the paper face is removed, before skimming w/ mud.

@@horstcarpentry I learned that the hard way . I once skimmed over exposed paper and ended up having to scrape it out, seal and reskim because the paper bubbled up through the mud.

I like what you did, padding out the sides with that little piece of trim. The few times we did crown that way, ( nailing right to the face frame) we notched the ears, and it turns out kinda crappy. P.s. every company I ever worked for absolutely insists on running the crown up to the ceiling, and it looks soooo bad almost every time, with the humps and out of levelness of the ceiling
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliments. I agree with you about the crown on the ceiling. It's always a ton of problems. Those cabinets were already assembled, so, the price savings made up for the non-flush sides. The customer was happy with the finish and that's what counts in the end. Glad you enjoyed the job. Most of this kinda trim work is made up as you go. You can only squeeze in what you can based on what you have available. Thanks for sharing

Apologies…. Why is the crown not touching the ceiling?
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 2 жыл бұрын
The cabinets did not go to the ceiling. The trim on top of this pantry was only done to line up with the adjoining cabinet. If the cabinets had gone up close to the ceiling then it would've been really bad because the ceiling was out of level by a lot. So making the crown work would've been quite the task. Thanks for watching

Cool, but why wouldn’t you take the trim to the ceiling??
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 3 жыл бұрын
I usually stay away from that because the ceiling is always off and unless you can caulk and paint it'll never look good. With the pre finished trim that I used hear I wanted to keep it simple. Thanks for watching

I love your attention to detail and I'm learning how to do things myself. Can I ask if it would be easier to build the whole frame and put it up in one piece instead of building it piece by piece in such a confined area?
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 10 ай бұрын
You could do it that way. I'm used to building things in place, so, it just feels natural to me to build it that way. I would make sure you give yourself some room to work the piece into place. Often when things are built all at once they won't fit and have to then be taken apart to modify. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching

So if you're remodeling a kitchen, should you do the ceiling before the top cabinets?
@horstcarpentry

Why not go all the way to the ceiling?
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry 4 жыл бұрын
I usually will shy away from that unless it's new because the ceiling is usually not flat or level. This will show even more once the trim is installed. This house had some issues with settling and would've been a nightmare if I ran the trim all the way up. Thanks for watching

hoping you can give me some advice. i have just about 6 1/4 inches to the ceiling on the right side of my kitchen. on the left side its like 7 inches. how would you fill the gap on the left side above the cabinet.
@horstcarpentry
@horstcarpentry Жыл бұрын
Any way you slice it there will be a noticeable difference between the two sides. You could do something similar to this but with a crown piece at the top against your ceiling. I used a piece of toe kick for the bulk of the space with a small piece of moulding at the bottom to cover the gap. When you install the crown you could start on the low side and cheat it up a bit as you install it to help gain some height on the far side. Be careful not to get to greedy with it and you should be able to make some of it up
