I experienced the exact same situation as this in Fuerte. I live in Ireland and have been kitesurfing for 20+ years. On a kitesurfing stag in Fuerte and was riding strapless. Came off the board but wasn't so worried about the it (never use a leash). Whilst bodydragging to get back to try and find it I got washing machined by a huge wave, dropped the kite in the ocean. Couldn't get it to relaunch at all in the big surf. Every time the kite got rolled in a wave it dragged me backwards under the water. Tried to release everything but for some reason the safety release didn't work. After numerous times being dragged underwater I manged to undo my waist harness . The whole kite and lines rolled through the surf. I then body surfed in the wave. I was absolutely exhausted and definitely thought my number was up that day. Glad you got sorted in the end.

The real lesson is to never kitesurf further than you can swim or have a solid rescue plan that does not depend on having enough wind to relaunch kite. Keeping calm is the other major lesson that this video demonstrates well.

One more reason to use short lines, and with all due respect Dimitri, you are an amazing kite surfer, but going so far offshore alone is quasi suicidal. You are lucky your foil blade and wings didn't tear up the kite, otherwise that would be a different story. Amazing demonstration of skills and self-control.

We can praise your self control, even when algae finally spiced the ride back ! You keep talking to your kite like a lover and the kite did not betrayed you ! I would probably not have dared to try to relaunch after untangling : finally the light wind may have helped you at least to unroll your bar while the kite was in the power zone, it could have been pulling fat too much I guess with stronger wind conditions. Thank you for sharing your horrific predicament with us. A good reminder of why I have no business trying to kitesurf as I lack the skill, intelligence, and calm demeanor exhibited by Dmitry. I can't even operate a GoPro camera let alone stay calm while taking out knots in the kite lines while treading water. When I surf I ride a longboard and stay close to shore and have started wearing a leash because I chain-smoke cigarettes and am scared to death of sea monsters and other ocean creatures. Wow! What a video! So safe for me to sit at the computer and watch as you become a Zen master. Happy for the happy ending!

Wow. Just wow. Usually things would've been handled pretty well when the kiter releases the kite when it gets washed instead of u-boating behind it wave after wave. However... so far offshore I understand releasing the kite is not an option. Which makes for a wild ride. Still don't understand how you managed to get all the lines untangled and restarting with so little wind is a work of art in itself. So you're either a very very talented kiter or a very lucky one. But probably both!

This beach would be in the top 5 most dangerous currents combined with advanced wave difficulty in the world. Many people have drowned here, the current can whip you away from the the Island of Mauritius, and you will never be seen again. Dont think for one second the coast guard or the mistral club will come to your rescue. I've witnessed the life guards watch people get washed out to sea, only to be saved by a brave surfer. BEWARE OF THIS BEACH, especially ONE EYE and the Le Morne pass (the current can move out to sea 18km/hr from the lagoon on an out going tide, the bigger the waves the faster the current moves).

No impact/life vest, no straps on the board, swimming far off shore without anybody nearby. Classic russian guy there.

Ты когда к парусу подплыл я подумал, что его можно в режим винга поставить и хреначить к берегу как на вингфоиле распутывать стропы.))) Очень похож кайтерский парус на крыло для вингсерфинга.

Wetsuit won't let you drown outside of being stuck in some crazy surf or getting pulled by a slipknot. Why ever cut lines otherwise? Maybe you have lots of $$ and spares ready at the beach, but still why cut when you can untangle later regardless?
