This began life on Kitty's Corner. Thought I'd show it the general audience. Just a ramble about different tangs found on fixed blades with an emphasis on the encapsulated tang.

Always good to see what is actually happening under those handles. I guess when you go beyond hand forging it's easier and cheaper to encapsulate, rat, push, or otherwise attach blades to separate handles. I'm glad more companies are sticking with full tangs however, even with their small blades.

Smaller knives used to be more likely to have full tangs because it was easier to make them that way!

I believe that the M9 bayonet has a tang that consists of a threaded rod that runs through the handle and links the blade to the pommel.

awesome. very informative. of note, even full tangs break at the hilt.

This is very true! They also break at the place where pins are used to hold them to the handle. Some times people will use a knife with a broken tang and not even realize it is broken.

Great video Tobias! I am not a fan of encapsulated/partial tang knive. Many of my older hunting knives with rat tail tangs which was the norm vs. full-tang knives. I prefer a rat-tail over this type of trickery.

Encapsulated tangs were very common on Talwars for centuries without major issues. I’m not expert enough to say if it was the default method, but it definitely was very common.

I would bet that many, many knives that are sold as full tang are actually encapsulated. When done correctly you have a strong knife/sword that is very capable of taking punishment. Full tang is over-hyped. The main reason you want a full length tang that passes through the handle is in the even the handle falls apart you still use the knife in an emergency. This can be done with anything from a rat-tail to a push-thru, or a full tang. A short partial tang can be problematic when a handle breaks. But when a blade is welded into a handle, depending on the welding, the joint could be the strongest part. Consider the construction of the Katana. Even traditional Katanas were not always full tang, especially when it comes to what most people call "full tang" today. We wont even get into to Traditional burned in rat tails of the Nepalese Kukris.

My wm Rogers fairbarin Sykes has a peened on pommel but my j nowill has a nut that can be unscrewed. I like the idea of a peened on pommel but I also like the idea of being able to change the handle for my pleasure
