Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a predominantly ground-based martial art, using the principals of leverage, angles, pressure and timing, as well as knowledge of the human anatomy, in order to achieve a non-violent submission of one’s opponent. Unlike other martial arts that focus on strikes and/or kicks, jiu jitsu focuses on close-contact “grappling” holds and techniques, and the application of chokes and joint-manipulations.

Wow Kize that was amazing. As a bluebelt I'm still a beginner in the sport, but I can see how you have a natural talent for the craft. You instinctively know in what direction to flail your limbs... that will turn into controlled movement over time and it feels incredibly empowering. You'd have a bright future in this gentle martial art. As others have commented before me, I sincerely do hope you'll find your way onto the tatami again. Oss

Honestly, I’m only on my fifth week of jiu jitsu and personally, it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. First week was HELL for me (it doesn’t help since I’m obese and haven’t exercised in years). But now I feel so much better and good about myself

I started training about 4 months ago and I'm hooked, I was in the worst shape of my life when I started, had been having foot issues from Plantar Fasciatis, I am a 35 year old male that was 195 lbs. I'm now feeling like I'm in better shape then I was when I was 25 and 155 lbs. I don't really know if there is a better cardio workout than rolling (sparring) in bjj. It also is so core intensive that I've really noticed my gut disappearing. I have not lost a ton of weight in the process, only about 8 lbs so far, but definitely puton a bit of muscle. I've always had a hard time motivating myself to go to the gym, but I don't have that problem with Jui Jitsui. It actually has been pushing me to actually want to go to the gym on off days to better my time at Jui Jitsui. But The best part for me is that my feet almost completely quit hurting. I used to come home from work and literally want to do nothing but put my feet up. Starting my journey was not been easy, especially the first couple months, but it's helped me get my life back again. I was really not doing well mentally after a couple years with the covid pandemic and how much my body was just hurting all the time, I can say bjj has quite possibly saved my life.

Super happy to hear about out of shape people get into this sport, HAVE FUN, and get back toward a healthier lifestyle. Hopefully you’re all still with it. The first few months are tough but as you learn and gain some strength, it becomes even more fun.. Least I think so 😄

Keep at it. For me it wasn't just obesity but also some old injuries. I've lost nearly 40# in almost 8 months. I recently upped my training regimen from two days off per week to one. I'm not rolling the whole duration but it's closer now than it was previously. It's a long slow process but it pays dividends. I had abdominal surgery last year and my core's not back yet but it's close. My knees hurt sometimes from a fall I took more than 10 years ago, and I'm the slowest runner and the worst lateral mover there. I had a repetitive-motion injury a while back, and I've had broken bones and sprains. I just hit 50. All that's meaningless, except that I still have to modify sometimes during warm-ups and drills, which are for me the hardest part of the class. What isn't meaningless, is I can now do a lot of stuff I used to be able to do, and I expect it will get better and easier if I keep with it. My clothes fit looser and I've had to donate some. __ Another note, as people have said, and the video also, it's different than you think. I took judo as a kid, and I wrestled in HS. I did TKD in college, I used to lift weights hardcore, and I picked up a few tricks here and there from friends and co-workers. I'm 6'4" and currently hovering around the 310# mark. Nobody wants to roll with the big strong guy who's a beginner, except for blue belts and above, and the occasional white belt who's got comparable size and strength. First time I rolled with a black belt, I didn't expect to WIN, but I thought I might at least give an OK fight. Didn't happen. Message given and received. I purchased a black gi after that. Easier to not show blood. I don't know your relative fitness, but you can expect some bruises and blood, and to feel whatever issues you have...just keep going and things will get better. You'll get hurt, just don't let it stop you. One thing about being a beginner is you tend to go all-out; I don't know enough yet to go slower or sometimes lighter. Which is one reason nobody wants to roll with the big guy. Nearly every obese person I ever knew, including myself, was a lot stronger than average, and we're usually no more prone than others to WANT to hurt others, but when you've got more size and mass, it can happen by accident easier than it does with a smaller individual (and the very small ones are the other ones people are reluctant to roll with...the why should be obvious here as well).

Wow, it's great to see this comment from a well established BJJ organization that has been on KZfaq since the very early days of KZfaq in May 2006! BJJ is a great sport that teaches self defense and respect for others. I hope Kize continues to train and starts competing soon!

I’m a brown belt in BJJ and have been doing it for over 11 years and honestly this was good to watch seeing how most people would step out of their comfort zone and try this art. @@elturko58 I would say BJJ does a lot of aerobic exercises because you are using your entire body. It’s like doing a lot of cardio work and you’ll definitely drop weight and put on a bit of muscle but not as much though. But it’ll definitely get you in losing weight shape. If you want to build muscle and or get lean then you will have to hit the gym and lift weights ect. Best luck to you in stepping into BJJ man! 👍👍

I'm a brown belt and have been in the sport for 13 years & I honestly love this video, it is very well done! I like how you captured the struggles and how tough the sport can be. No matter how athletic you are, it does take a long time to get better, but gets easier every week that you train. There are so many benefits from it, I really encourage everyone to try it.

I just started taking Jui Jitsu because of recent trauma. I’m only 3 classes in and its just sooo much fun! I haven’t had the courage to just roll with anyone yet 😣 I wanna throw myself in as hard as you did though and give it a shot next time 💪🏻

Keep on going and courage will follow 🤙🤙🤙I really started to roll on my 4th month and only after I found my bjj tribe outside of US. Keep on going that's the key 🗝️ No matter where you are ☺️ You can even get a dummy (I travelled with it) to help you practice at the beginning as it helps with muscle memory at least for me it did.

Never be scared to roll. You will lose. You will be put in uncomfortable situations. However the only way to put together what you learn is to roll. Diamond's are formed under pressure. So embrace the pressure. Do not run from it! Good luck on your journey!

I know this was months ago but I just started 2 weeks ago! 1 class was more judo and other was no gi fundamentals. The thing I already love the most is the people, the community. At the time I started my "fundamentals" they were still further along from day 1... so I just jumped in but everyone respected my pace or if I needed to rest and gather myself etc... everyone WANTS people to be there and it's a great thing!

My kids (5, 8 and 12) all do bjj with my hubby. I told them I was joining the gym next week and started watching videos on bjj for women and they kind of freaked me out (started regretting telling the kids) Your positive attitude reset me and reminded me why I wanted to try it! Hey Kize, I saw your video a few weeks back and it helped me a lot on my fear of starting out on an MMA gym as a total noobie. I had my first class last night, it was rough but I think that was the hardest step and I thank you for helping me take this after so many months of thinking about whether I should do it or not. 6 years in, 4-stripe purple here, and you were absolutely incredible. I'm sure you heard it a million times but 99.9% of practitioners have been in your exact shoes. Even with years of judo, HS wrestling, and a childhood of karate could only prepare me so far (not very lol). I think, similar to you, one of the biggest first steps wasn't a physical one. It was the mental adjustment philosophically. To put it into more practical terms, it was pacing. One of the most important advice I give to anyone new is to *breathe*. Hope you continue your training! If not, glad you gave it your all 🤙🏻🤙🏻

Wow, great work. For sure, you know how to learn. I've never written down or notated flowcharts and can definitely see how that can be super helpful for conceptualizing and giving yourself a cheat sheet for what to do next. This could be helpful for everyone doing jiu jitsu.

I’m still contemplating to even take a trial class, it seems so overwhelming. The main reason I want to is because of my anxiety and I really need something to focus on. But my anxiety is making it quite difficult to take that leap, lol funny how that works. Idk why I’m so freaked out

Totally understandable! Especially given how close-contact jj is. Don't force yourself to do it, the time will come. When you want to, you'll go! Or take a friend with you! That way they'll most likely be your drilling partner.

Kize, I was completely impressed. I did many forms of martial arts when i was younger for the better part of 20 yrs. What you did in 30 days was amazing! You certainly have the knack for this sport and should continue. Even if you just do it for the shear enjoyment a couple of times a week its certainly great exercise and a skill you can take into life that may save your life one day.

Ive been doing jiujistu for about 4 months so im still very new but im training with alot of brown and blackbelts getting tapped and i find getting tapped by people better then you make you so much better

Well done. I have been doing jiu jitsu for approaching four years. I think you are on target to get some awesome skills if you continue. If anything I believe that not studying the game more and kind of organizing my progression from move to move and position to submission in a focused study has probably kept me back from progression. I have had no shortage of live rolls, submitting others and being submitted for sure, but writing notes and organizing the process mentally is really a great way to get even more out of your learning experience. I hope to bite your style on this process.

WOW! I have been wanting to take martial arts classes, but I wanted to see what it is was truly like as a beginner. Your video gave my peace of mind, as I thought to myself on how hard it may be for me to remember the moves, but your mentioning how it was for you in the beginning to remember once you were on the floor gave me hope! Depending on where you train at but for the most part Jiu Jitsu guys and girls are extremely friendly and pleasant people. It looks like you probably made some friends at that gym so thats very cool. Also, very nice 30 day progression!

This is amazing, I really want to give this a go. I challenge you to take up bouldering for 30 days. It's such a technical sport, not just about upper body strength and you can track your progress really easily with the grading system. Would love to watch you do this!

I've been doing BJJ for about 6 months and you honestly held your own better than I could. A lot of that was me being too chicken to attend rolling sessions often during the first couple of months, and then being unable to due to time conflicts when I realised how important it is. Don't skip out on rolling folks its the most important time you'll spend in the gym!

Yo this was awesome! I just started bjj. I've been to 3 classes. Rolling can be intimidating but I agree with you, starting rolling right away. Great stuff!

Getting your first Sub on day 28 is amazing. Congrats. the First 2 months of my training I didnt focus on submissions at all. I just tried to survive and advanced my position. I really hope you continue to train. Its an amazing hobby and lifestyle.

I like that you picked both Muay Thai (another video) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for your martial arts journey. They are very different but both great arts to learn and put together. Great video, sweetheart.

yeah VoW must have some good teachers cause your frames, regardless of how well they were applied, their intent was really good - feet always on a shin or hip, knees recovered to prevent guard pass. well done

The funny thing with jiu-jitsu (or really any skill for that matter), is that the more you learn, the more you realise that you don't actually know anything. Jiu-jitsu is a constantly evolving sport, and there is ALWAYS more to learn or refine. Great work, I loved watching this journey :)

I have always wanted to take a jiu jitsu class or a taekwondo class but always nervous about the environment. I am busy with school and working full time but I think I am going to go ahead and find a place near me. Seeing you more confident after 30 days got me excited!

I love how it looked like the group classes started with the triangle choke which can be one of the harder but more fun moves. I'm 14 and have been doing jiu jitsu for around a year now and I think you progressed pretty well in 30 days.

Nice job! As 10 year, recently promoted black belt, BJJ practitioner I am very honored you decided to challenge yourself. I agree with your instructors, by the end you are performing more like a 3-4 month white belt. I truly hope you continue you BJJ journey! And yes…most BJJ academies are like Wii audiences…well, at least ours is…lol. There’s no prouder moment for an instructor then when we see our students executing the techniques they learned! Can’t help but cheer!!!!! OSS!!!
