Part one of a two-part comparison of the King James Version (KJV) with the English Standard Version (ESV). This video gives background information on each translation, then shows the two side-by-side in a series of passages from the Old Testament where the ESV translates the Dead Sea Scrolls or an ancient version such as the Septuagint or Vulgate.

Wow, thank you for this in depth comparison. In Psalm 91 the KJV uses the word buckler instead of shield. If you research what a buckler is used for, it gives the text a powerful statement. God doesn't simply shield you, he deflects and parries the enemies attacks. That is why I love the kjv, the translators knew how to convey so much meaning in one line of scripture; I don't get that from modern translations.

ESV says the same, the Nasb says shield and " bulwark" which is a wall of protection . Ships have a balwark an extension of the wall protecting us from the storm. I love the KJV but the NASB has become my most favorite translation now. I was gifted an Allan NASB last year by a total stranger and the Lord has used that bible to break some serious chains for me with bible translations. 😇 Now I keep the KJV nearby but I use the NASB for my main user, it used to be the other way around and I didn't trust other versions at all. I still agree with our good brother in this video, the KJV has beauty in its delivery of the scriptures that is unmatched.

@@Airik1111bibles - I agree. The NASB has a lot going for it. It is very literal (though maybe not the *most* literal), very accurate, easy to find in verse-by-verse format, and some very good Bible teachers use it. I've been consulting a Lockman genuine leather NASB, the one formatted like your Allan reader, while working through my UBS5 lately. I look forward to those Zondervan Comfort print editions. I know they plan to do an SCR and a Preachers' Bible, but it would be nice if they tried their hand at a classic format like that Allan reader. Have you heard anything more about what they plan to offer? (If these Zondervan offerings fly off the shelves, would Lockman be tempted to postpone the 2020 NASB indefinitely?)

@@RGrantJones I haven't heard any news on the premier edition I'm just happy to see a quality made NASB that isn't $150-$200. The Lockman editions are very sad and I was being nice in my last calfskin review. I had to glue the yapp down out of box but I have had that happen with a few Allan's so easy fix for me. What really gets me a bit upset is the blue paper its just flat out cheap and many reviewers don't even bring it up but personally if I'd bought that Lockman I would of returned it. 3 years ago it would of been cool but today it's just way behind the current market and over priced. That's why in that thinline Lockman video I told people that I had an opinion about bible marketing in regards to Lockmans bibles. They are selling people a calfskin cover and budget book block for $100-$120 its way overpriced for the quality. The Neslson Premiers might not be "full premium leather" but overall paper and print quality is excellent plus under $100 some are around $85 at times. I hope we will see change from Lockman just like I hope Kirkbride will also change with the market.

@@Airik1111bibles - The NASB I use most often is a black genuine leather Large Print Ultrathin printed in China in 2013. The paper and print are very good. (It's the Bible I showed in that short video I did early on about the newsprint effect in the ESV Large Print Thinline.) I have an older (circa 2009) Lockman NASB Large Print Ultrathin in calfskin with the felt slip cover, but I prefer to use the 2013 genuine leather copy. It's printed more boldly. I also have an SCR from a few years back, before Lockman went to the wide margin/blue paper style, and it's also a pretty good Bible for the price. I mention all that to suggest that Lockman's deep decline in quality seems to date to the past five or six years. I associate it with the move to blue paper. By the way, that 2009ish calfskin Large Print Ultrathin has some quality issues of its own. I'll show it some day. When I do, I'll mention this article from the Bible Design Blog, since the article describes the unique binding approach the Chinese took on that edition. Thanks for all your informative videos. I think it was in this one that you mentioned you think the ESV apocrypha is out of print. There is an edition available from Concordia Publishing House. It is a companion to their Lutheran Study Bible. I have it but all I have really done so far is break it in. (Thanks for that video, too.) But it looks very good. There's even a chart comparing the account of the Maccabees to that of Josephus. And the paper is really thick. Almost no show through.

I am Catholic and would like to ask you if you'd recommend buying the Augustine Bible which is supposedly the ESV with Apocrypha books? Would it be closer to word for word as the Douay Rheims or KJV is?

I’m just not sure I agree with the commentary about the Bible’s used for the ESV. Some act as if the ESV was translated from the originals and it wasn’t. But overall I really enjoy the info you provide. Very studious

The Vulgate in 1 Samuel 14:41 most likely just said "give a sign" as is shown in the 1610 Douay, and reconstructed by the stuttgart vulgate. The longer reading in the Challoner revision comes from the Clementine Vulgate which in this passage is translated from the Roman Septuagint, which was specifically prepared for the revision and standardization of the Clementine Vulgate for the printing press.

At 13:40. Isaiah 14:4. I checked the Leningrad version of the Masoretic Text at Bible Hub Interlinear. Hebrew text says "madebah" the golden city. Under Strongs 4062 says maDhebah=golden city. Further down under 4062 says word origin of madhebah is maRhebah meaning boisterous, raging behavior, fury.

The Douay-Rheims was a literal translation of the Vulgate to a fault. The Challoner revision of 1750 (often mistakenly also called Douay-Rheims) is still a literal translation but has been heavily revised in light of the KJV. I have sometimes used it as a reference to the Vulgate when I didn't feel like trying to translate it myself.

Concerning "what DSS provides support for the reading"Give to Levi" at 11:55 in Dt 33:8: Scrolls 4Q35 Deuteronomy h and 4Q45 PaleoDeuteronomy r are two Dead Sea Scrolls that have "Give to Levi" in DT 33:8

A good comparison, and especially valuable when you show where one or both depart from the masoretic text and give priority to the Septuagint, and the ESV uses the Dead Sea Scrolls. How soon do you think part 2 will be available?

Thanks, Mike Richards. I think it will take three to four weeks. These translation comparison videos are much harder to make than the standard Bible review. I have most of the slides made up, but there are a few gaps, and I have to draft the script, record the audio, and add the illustrations.

Great Vid. I especially enjoy the bookmarks in the description. I am never using a Bible that doesn't provide italics for man-added words and uses a NT based off of probable-forged manuscripts such as Vaticanus and Siniaticus like the ESV does. No translation is perfect but I still prefer the Byzantine translations.

@@royalpriest89, What kind of rebuttal does “probable-forged” deserve…How about this. It’s probable-not forged. It cracks me up that some KJV Onlyists are so wrapped up in their dogma that they actually wish that God hadn’t preserved the treasure of early manuscripts that he did. They actually believe that the last people ever allowed to do textual criticism were the King James translators. I’m very sure they all wish the KJV translators hadn’t written their Preface To The Reader.

@@kylec8950 , You clearly haven’t read very much about the issue or why even honest KJV Onlyists believe Simonides claims are false. All of modern scholarship accepts Codex Sinaiticus as real. I don’t want anyone to take my word on it though. I want them to actually research it themselves. Listen to what actual scholars who have no dog in the fight say. Only people who are upset at what the early manuscripts contain are still perpetuating the forgery nonsense. There’s a reason all of modern scholarship, including secular scholars, accept it as a real manuscript..and they love exposing Christian forgeries.

You absolutely need to compile this knowledge into a book, comparing these translations (or maybe smaller volumes with different versions compared to each other) unless someone else has already done this?

I'm not sure. Over the years I've seen a few books that discuss the character of the available translations. But I haven't seen one that consists largely of side-by-side comparisons.

@@RGrantJones Maybe it would work if you organized the chapters around the various issues your comparisons have raised, and then use the historic and currently available translations as examples and illustrations. That way the book would not be made obsolete the first time a new major translation came out.

The KJV was written over 400 years ago. Obviously, English has changed dramatically over that time and word have even changed meaning completely. No translation should remain static for so long, and should be updated but not too often. It seems to me that once every generation or so should suffice. I use d to use the KJV as my only Bible translation but now use the NKJV and the MEV, as well as others. I admit a bias in favor of the underlying texts of the KJV, influenced in part by sentiment. The familiarity of the phrasing, even in the newer TR translations is comforting. The ESV has a measure of that to some extent.

@R Grant Jones : If you ever have the time and you would like to compare more Bible translations. I’d like to make a personal request for you to compare the KJV to the Jehovah’s Witnesses New World Translation. I’m sure it would make an entertaining comparison. And on a personal note I’d be fascinated to see even more differences than what I have already discovered between those translations. It was an incredible eye opener to find out the Bible that I had been brought up on from Birth was actually a completely dishonest translation of the scriptures. If you don’t ever get to do that comparison, that is completely fine and don’t feel pressured In any way! Thanks for the encouragement, Wilson! I hope to get back to work on a Douay-Rheims/KJV comparison soon, but once that's done, a KJV/New World Translation comparison is possible. But I'm not very familiar with the NWT -- I don't even own a copy. So, if I were to begin such a project, it might take some time for me to gather enough data to provide a useful video. Anyway, I'll keep it in mind. Thanks for the suggestion!

I find it funny that the English “Standard” Version has been revised three times (that we know of) in 18 years. That’s not much of a standard. The New American “Standard” Version is working on it’s third also. Another good comparison verse: was Moses floating in an “ark” or a “basket”? Is “basket” adding clarity, or obliterating connection and meaning?

The word "Standard" was originally intended to distinguish the official American edition of the Revised Version from the unofficial editions that had hit the U.S. market from the 1880s to 1901. Hence the more common name for the translation: the American Standard Version. The term "Standard" then came to mean "the translations derived from the ASV" (namely, the Revised Standard Version, New American Standard Bible, and New Revised Standard Version), which made sense. The English Standard Version is also from this lineage, so the "Standard" part makes sense, even if the "English" part doesn't (since it's not a British edition of the RSV). Then other publishers started using the word "Standard" and diluted the meaning of the term.

AutumnSays, no, you’re misinformed. The KJV has never been “revised”. It had its spelling and printing errors corrected and modernized in 1769.

@@joeltunnah The King James Version has received several editions with a number of translation changes. Charts detailing those changes are readily available online. The translation currently exists in four editions: an Oxford standard text based on the 1769 edition, a Cambridge standard text (c. 1900) with some minor differences to the Oxford text, and two more notably modified Cambridge paragraph editions. It has been officially revised once by the authority of its copyright holder, the British monarchy, (as the Revised Version of 1881-1885) and is the basis of several unofficial revisions, some mild (e.g. Noah Webster's revision) and some more extensive (e.g. the New King James Version and the Modern English Version).

M.A. Moreno, you’re talking about the new versions in the 19th and 20th centuries. Those are NOT the King James Authorized Version. The KJV today is the same 1611 text, with spelling updated (to 1769 standards) and printing errors corrected. Try reading more closely next time.

They're small, but they're not all simply spelling updates and printing error corrections: www.bible-researcher.com/canon10.html As I said, the 1769 edition is the basis for two available editions, the Oxford edition and the Cambridge edition. The differences are minor, but KJV-Onlyists still debate over which one is the "correct" one. The latter is sometimes called the "Pure Cambridge" edition by its champions, while others remain unconvinced of its superiority over the more common Oxford edition. Don’t need to. I’ve got the Holy Ghost. It’s not that deep. The kjv worked for over 400 years. There is power in Gods word. It does not change. So 400,000,000 books and videos are not needed on this

Many KJO christians have bought into the theory that there is no BC LXX, and they couldn't care less about the dead sea scrolls. I'm looking forward to part 2.

Thanks for the comment. I've been hearing that myth about the LXX for a number of years now, most recently from Steven Anderson. Just a week or two ago, I heard a Textus Receptus advocate dismiss the Dead Sea Scrolls as "scraps of paper." I'll try to make Part 2 worth your while.

R. Grant Jones, also David Daniels, a big KZfaq KJV advocate who I agree with 95% of the time, has promoted the theory that the “Septuagint” is an a.d. forgery. I don’t find it at all compelling or well reasoned.

Sylvain Durand, have you looked at the high res images online of sinaiticus? Not a manuscript I would build a translation on. And it has a very dubious history. Not to mention that the dating method used, paleography, is pure pseudoscience; and the Vatican refuses to submit it to carbon dating or ink analysis.

@@joeltunnah To begin with, I think you're confusing your codici. Sinaiticus is at the British Museum, not the Vatican. Also, textual criticism has progressed quite a bit since Wescott & Hort. I don't think anybody relies exclusively on Sinaiticus or Vaticanus the way they did more than a hundred years ago. Personally I favor the Byzantine text, but I try to avoid left field conspiracy theories.

Also keep in mind that the other version companies make BUNDLE because every one of them (except the KJV) is copyrighted, thus the copyright has to be renewed ad royalties paid. The KJV is not copyrighted, thus is freely available to everyone. Money talks people.

It's not available to everyone. It's copyrighted in the UK. Also, there's a translation from the early 2000s called the "World English Bible" that was deliberately published without a copyright, so it's a lie to say that "every one of them (except the KJV) is copyrighted." If anything, the World English Bible should get higher praise than the KJV because the World English Bible is free to everyone, while the KJV is only free to people in certain countries.

ASV 1901 is public domain also the Geneva Bible.

They missed the point about the money, reading the comments, but you’re right. They create these “new” versions thinking a denomination will adopt them like the United Methodists did with the RSV, and therefore generate bulk sales for pew bibles, but the denominations are fading away, post-modernization has occurred, so now it just must be ego driven. Why not just stick with the good old KJV, and stop calling us KJVO’s, for lack of fairness or compassion. I’m sick of hearing it.

You are picking what you think makes sense. So you can't say thus sayeth the Lord, right? You should do more investigating. How about tuning in to Chick Tracts and listening to several of his videos?

The ESV is based upon an inferior Greek Text to that of the AV. The creators of the Critical Text denied the Reformed principle of the Providential Preservation of Scripture unlike those who penned the AV. See chapter 1 of The Baptist Confession of Faith 1689 and The Westminster Confession of Faith re. Preservation. The Critical Text is based upon a small minority of manuscripts whereas the Received Text is agreeable to thousands of extant manuscripts. My choice of Bible is determined by which manuscripts in the original tongues are used and not whether it is an easy read.

I'll stick with the good ole KJV. "For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints." (1 Cor. 14.33)

Thank you. These millions of videos and books based on people’s opinions are pointless. Whose even getting saved while people are arguing about this? The devil has peoples minds.
