This is my favorite song by them. 😁 Headphones definitely help you hear all the little things in Tools music that make a huge difference. And I think your interpretation was spot on!
@crystalscolza1663
@crystalscolza1663 3 жыл бұрын
Many bands do not have their mixer dude pay attention to what it sounds like in the headphones... they listen to the music, they balance it for sitting in the studio. But only a really good mixer puts on those headphones and gives you that experience where maynard is singing right over your left shoulder and the drums rotate all the way around your head. That's a special attention to detail that not many bands, mixer dudes do.
@shipirategirl7070
@shipirategirl7070 3 жыл бұрын
@@crystalscolza1663 absolutely! I wish more bands did this sort of thing to be honest. I've only come across a hand full of them and even then its more math metal/finger tapping sort of style. Nothing like what Tool's mixer has proven themselves capable of.

this song is considered one of their masterpieces. it is beautifully crafted and planned out music that perfectly communicates its message. it is funny though how their song about over thinking and over analyzing being a bad thing is the song people analyze most from them.
@thomascrawley99
@thomascrawley99 3 жыл бұрын
You got the wrong take-away from it. The song is encouraging over-thinking and over-analysing, give it another listen with that perspective in mind, it's trying to tell you its good for you!
@jeremybozarth6682
@jeremybozarth6682 2 жыл бұрын
Are you certain about that portrayal of it being a bad thing? I think it's left up to interpretation and depending on listener the song could be actually telling you to over analyze and never stop questioning anything or else you get caught in that spiral and recycled by the machine....... just a thought
@ThunderBasketball22
@ThunderBasketball22 2 жыл бұрын
It literally says “withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind” so yes, we’re sure. Withering your intuition does not sound like a positive side affect of overanalysis
@jeremybozarth6682
@jeremybozarth6682 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThunderBasketball22 no you're sure that's what it says to you. Some would say letting go of those mortal opportunities and the bounds of ones intuitions within this earthly prison which is our physical construct that guides our perception of reality from it's pinned down vantage point is a very good thing. Early preparation for the endless vortex of experience of which we have closed our means of perception in our egotistical embrace of ones self long ago...I once heard Michael Tellenger one refer to us as a species with amnesia...... I sometimes wonder just how close to truth that actually is ... Maybe sir, Your obtuse perception of your self sovereignty is blinding you to hearing this song the way others might and if I know the personality of Maynard just a little I know 100 percent that is exactly some shit he would pull to fuck with Tool fans out there because he can..... Face it bro the only people who could be right about what is really being said here are those who wrote it and whatever it says to you is exactly what they meant it to be
@jeremybozarth6682
@jeremybozarth6682 2 жыл бұрын
And what does he say directly after that line "withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind"? Continuing thus"And I must feed my will to feel this moment drawing way outside the lines. Reaching out to embrace the random reaching out to embrace whatever May come".. you know when your intuitions are withered and those mortal "delusions" or opportunities are behind you? that seems like anticipation, excitement, fulfillment, enjoyment and even encouragement to embrace this letting go and rise to higher consciousness, wouldn't you say? Or is that just absolutely NOT what Maynard and/or other authors of these words had in mind whatsoever???? No one's interpretation is right and at the same time everyone's is that's exactly what music is meant to do, take you for a journey through your feelings thoughts and emotions driven by the operator(experiencer) themselves.......

Maynard repeats “spiral” hinting at a numeric sequence, so if you go back and count the tempo in the lyrics you will count 1,1,2,3,5,8,13 and then he goes back around repeating this. Super deep. Also brilliant. This is the Fibonacci sequence which uses mathematics to calculate what is called the golden spiral (aka golden ratio:1.618), seen in art and nature.

Forced maybe, by the spiral itself, the universe, or purely life/existence. That's everything existence/ life is everything (as below so above) and that instinctual will to exist is the driving force, I.E. the function of the system. The vortex of energy is the visual guide you see in nature and mathmatics in the fibiancci spiral everywhere. I believe the message here is that outside and all around the spiral of energy that is our individual lifespans there is so much more going on unavailable to our limited human perception and every one of us should take out time in your lives to allow our minds to step outside this physical dimensional shell and pan out to perceive this wonder for what it actually is; One continuous fluid of energy in motion(emotion) with numerous beginnings and absolutely no end showing us such an unbelievable portrayal of organization and beauty unmatched by anything whatsover.(organized chaos, balancing the unbalanceable, yin and yang connected and dancing in perfect harmony) So let the details go else you get lost in following the lines and end up missing the meaning of life, the true detail and never really appreciate this gift we all have been given. Enjoy the moment everyone its all that truly matters. Don't let negativity ruin your experience for a second.... you may end up regretting it....... OH, and SPIRAL OUT MY FRIENDS

Black, white, red and yellow are significant colours to many tribes across the world. It used to be thought that those colours were literally what infant vision development went through. Additionally, ancient alchemists thought that those colours in order, were what was necessary to transmute material into the philosophers stone; using various chemical processes or burning would to change the colour of a substance through those four colours in order would change the material into another material at a molecular level. Whatever was meant in this song those four colours are significant all over the world for different reasons

Some interesting facts about the song, well interesting to me as I never knew this much went into this beautiful masterpiece. Ironically, the song, as well as the entire album’s, the structure was carefully planned; this specific song is based on the Fibonacci sequence: The introduction section of the song is 01:12 long (0, 1, 1, 2 are the first four numbers in the sequence). The first verse starts at 97 seconds, which is approximately 1.618 minutes - (The Golden Ratio) Each verse is 55 seconds long (11th # in sequence). The syllables in the verses coincide with the sequence, as the first part of the first verse goes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3 The 2nd line “to swing on the spiral” finishes at 6:18 which numerically matches 1.618 - (The Golden Ratio) The time signature of the main riff is 9/8 8/8 7/8, 987 is the 17th term in the sequence.

The first time I ever saw Tool play live was in Everett, Washington back in 2007. Lateralus has been and always will be, not just my favourite Tool song, but probably top 3 favourite songs of ALL time. When they got to it during the show, I was about to die with anticipation lol. It started, it built up, it slowed down... Then it got to that KICK BACK IN moment, and everything stopped. At that moment, they pulled out the drummer from the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, with a bowl drum set up of some sort, then he and Danny Carey had a whole drum off. I can't remember how long it lasted, and I bet 1000s of people were amazing and in awe. For me though, lol I had waited years to hear that massive drop in the last half of Lateralus, and as it built up to the moment, POOF, silence. Lol As amazing as that drum off was, it was like I was just denied the final climax of an orgasm. 😂😂😂 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q6xxfseevqq4m30.html This is the full concert, people have timestamps in the comments for those who wanna see the drum off haha

There is a lot of connection to Alastair Crowley in Tool's music, lyrics and art. The "black, white... Red, yellow..." segment is derived from this Crowley quote, though it's not a direct quote. "My number is 11, as all their numbers who are of us. The Five Pointed Star, with a Circle in the Middle, & the circle is Red. My colour is black to the blind, but the blue & gold are seen of the seeing. Also I have a secret glory for them that love me." There's a lot of fun connections to make with Tool/Crowley, especially if you're interested in their symbology and lyrical themes.

Definitely keep spiraling out with TooL, you will not be disappointed, they are a cerebral band with a message about different aspects of the human mind and philosophy about humanity with perspectives on how to learn and grow as a society and as a individual. Keep spiraling out and the dedicated TooL army (fans) will help you grow along your path. You already seem to grasp the concept of this cerebral driven band. That gives you a unique perspective of humanity and the human mindset in today's society.

Has anyone broken down the song how it goes along with the Fibonacci sequence? Never mind I just saw somebody said it. But it looks like they missed how the lyrics also go according to the sequence. Also the “black and white…red and yellow” is something that’s related to ancient alchemical processes related to the 4 elements in medieval alchemy…among other things. From Wikipedia: “The Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical sequence. It starts from one, the next number is one, and the next number being two, creates the 2+1 which is three, continuing in this mathematical progression. That's how they found the chord progression. It began linking up to the Fibonacci sequence." The syllables Maynard sings in the first verse follow the first six numbers in the pattern, ascending and descending in the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. "Black (1), then (1), white are (2), all I see (3), in my infancy (5). Red and yellow then came to be (8), reaching out to me (5). Lets me see (3)." In the next verse, Maynard begins with the seventh number of the Fibonacci sequence (13), implying a missing verse in between. He descends back down with the following pattern; 13-8-5-3. "As below so above and beyond I imagine (13). Drawn beyond the lines of reason (8). Push the envelope (5). Watch it bend (3)." The second verse adds the missing line to complete the sequence; "There is (2), so (1), much (1), more that (2), beckons me (3), to look through to these (5), infinite possibilities (8)." 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3-2-1-1-2-3-5-8-13-8-5-3”

Infancy: young in evolvement, before inner growth and transformation. Black & white: one or the other, no in between. Red and yellow: it's not just black & white. Overthinking, analyzing separates the body from the mind: mindless thinking/analyzing takes us out of mindful presence, being in the moment. (the only moment that matters is the present one). And so on. ;)

There’s a video on KZfaq that tackles the math behind this song, but for the life of me I can’t remember what it is at this moment. But, essentially, this track follows the Fibonacci sequence…. which is nature’s spiral displayed through mathematics. It’s a formula that shows up in many of nature’s elements- from the way a snail’s shell spirals- all the way to how our own universe spirals….. it all keys back to a mathematical formula called the Fibonacci sequence. Tool is expertly calling this out in this song. The lyric “spiral out” isn’t just a cute phrase- it’s referencing the Fibonacci sequence. Maynard and some of the other Tool musicians are math nerds, so this shit is right up their alley. This song is a completely genius accomplishment. If you ever find that video that I, for the life of me can’t find right now, you’ll see what I’m talking about. Okay- EDIT…. I found the video. Y’all nerds check this shit out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7V4nsh5l7zFdWQ.html

Oh and the color part at the beginning of the song goes back to the indigo thing as well in that they see things differently their minds work differently theyre specially gifted and said to save us from defeating ourselves as a race... being that Maynard shared a number of the characteristics indigos were believed to have some speculated he may very well be an indigo That in turn tied in with multiple other "conspiracy" theories surrounding not only Maynard but the industry as well

I don't understand why anyone would complain about the pausing. If you don't pause and give input how do know what you are feeling. What's the point of a reaction if you can't react. They mind as well just go and listen to the song. We are here for your journey. Keep it up! You are doing great! For me it is really soothing to listen to your voice. So, thank you!

"All I see in my infancy" leads me to think about being ignorant of the world around you, rather than physical age. When you become more educated or awake to the world around you "Red and yellow then came to be" leads me to think that your understanding of your world is increasing.
