Lewis, just wanted to say it was really fun seeing your take on an anime style scripted duel. As a former competitive player, it both brought back memories while feeling fresh.

Agreed. It was fun. As a lover of the anime, I absolutely adored it. But as a semi-decent anime-style scripted duel writer myself and one who watches the Duel videos on TGS Anime where he goes over anime Duels to see if either player made any misplays that cost them the match, I also can't help but notice some of the misplays in the Duel, like the Bandit not switching his Monsters to defense mode after Blue-Eyes attack failed on Five-Hheaded Dragon, they hadn't attacked yet they could have been switched to defense and he would have been safe, unless of course, Linkara had something like Fairy Meteor Crush of Big Bang Shot in his hand. But much like when I watch an anime Duel I can just turn off my brain and enjoy the Duel because the Duel between him and the Bandit was absolutely awesome. :)

Honestly, Jonas had a pretty interesting--if simple--character arc. He's one of those characters who you start out hating and then do a complete 180 on as their character development kicks in. Also can't get over the fact that he looks like a younger MCU Loki.

The fact that the man behind a Superman comic also made a Santa Claus origin story comic is pretty funny when you remember that Santa Claus: The Movie from 1985 was basically like a Santa version of the first Richard Donner Superman movie, down to having similar logos and the same producers. Which honestly just makes Morrison's claims that there was never a Santa Claus origin story even more baffling.

No one ever really goes over St. Nick being a necromancer hobbyist. ...and then there's this story apparently. Yes there is traditionally a line between necromancy and shamanism, but he plays a tune and gets possessed by spirits. I think it counts.

Hey, I'm the Patron who requested this one and I just want to say it was everything I was hoping for. I picked this one because it seemed like the perfect good comic to feature on the show: a story that was ripe for jokes and riffing, cool and fun moments to just admire, and a great message and feeling of hope and positivity that I know will always get a smile out of Linkara and my fellow AT4W fans. This will forever be one of my favorite episodes of the show and I look forward to revisiting it for many Christmases to come. Merry Christmas to everyone at AT4W and anyone else who happens to read this, I hope it's been a great one for you

*Their life, Grant Morrison is non-binary. Though in all seriousness, you'd be surprised how crazy a lot of the real world origins of Santa is. I think Odin was a major inspiration for what we think of as Santa today, hence the Scandinavian setting of this comic.

The Cult of Saint Nicholas took many centuries to be established and emerged first in the Eastern Mediterranean. And while there is truth to the claim that Scandinavian Kings overlayed Pagan and Christian practices (Yule was moved back from Mid January to late December) and depending on the region Scandinavians would merge their Christianity with their Paganism that doesn’t mean ever Christmas Practice has secret Pagan origins. The Cult of Saint Nikolas didn’t really reach Scandinavia until late 11th century, and even then Santa Claus as a separate figure doesn’t come about until the Early Modern Period with the rise of Protestantism. See while some Protestant Sects venerate Saint Nicholas others didn’t; and in those who didn’t presents were brought not by Saint Nicholas on December Sixth but by Kris Kringle - little baby Jesus - on Christmas Even assisted by his totally not Santa helper. And then the modern image of Santa Claus is constructed in the 19th century by moral reformers who wanted to ruin everyone’s good times by transforming Christmas from a time when people got drunk, threw parties, sang all night, and got into raucous brawls into a family friendly event about family and charity and good will towards men and not 12 straight nights of singing, and drinking, and fighting.

I personally loved "There are no bad children". I think that Santa and other figures too often are used as a way to scare children into obedience, to try and teach them bad lessons. A real Santa figure would love all children, would know all children are a victim of their circumstances and their parents, and that they all deserve love, affection, attention, and a chance for growth. Teaching the kid with the toy from Santa how not to get bored, and then him later saying "Santa brings toys to the good children, and I got a toy, so I must be good" as a turnabout instead of as irony I think was a magnificent choice. Made me tear up.

An interesting thing about this book, the blobby and geometric shaped spirits are a direct reference to a foundational moment in Grant’s life. They had a very similar experience in Katmandu, and since then, they’ve been making call backs to it in pretty much all their work. It’s in most of All Star Superman, it’s in the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, The Worlogog in JLA, Captain Atom in Pax American, and of course The Invisibles. Once you start looking for it, it’s everywhere in their work. Personally, I think it’s brilliant every time it’s used, because Grant never really does it the same way twice.

Would you believe New Years? I came into this review expecting some forced darkness, angst, and basically everything you'd expect from a lame adultifying of a kid's concept, but this surprised me by actually sounding good. I like the Badass Santa trope, especially Rise of the Guardians and Regular Show's versions, and this seems to be a strong version of it right here that takes itself just seriously enough. I'll agree that it remixes a couple things from that Rakin Bass special, but it's more of an inspiration than just a darkened version of it. They upgraded the Mayor (that's what a Burgermeister is, a mayor) to actual royalty, but they gave him an actual evil streak, not just "I hate toys because I slipped on one and broke my back."

Life and Adventures of Santa is my favorite holiday special. We had it on tape when I was a kid, and it was so strange and different that it hooked me in immediately. Cool to see it get a mention here.

Still not as strange as Sanda, the manga written by Paru Itagaki (the creator of Beastars) about a middle school student who learns that not only is he a descendant of Santa Claus, but awakens the power to transform into a big, buff Santa whenever he wears red clothing. And I'm not even scratching the surface of it's weirdness.

i would totally buy it if you WERE right on the last of those runes being related to the World Tree--that's actually kinda-sorta where the whole idea of Christmas trees came from. i'm stretching a bit in comparing the two, but Christmas trees started off as Germanic traditions related to the veneration of Thor (though he was more associated with oaks) and, as this comic insinuates, a fair bit of Christmas and Santa Claus lore really DOES come from Norse/Germanic mythology with the "original" Santa being Odin.

Honestly, a violent Santa, or at least a Santa who will defend people's right to joy has been done enough it's not a surprise anymore. Though I lean more Rise of the Guardians than Violent Night. Oh, and Bruce Cambel's Santa reliving his past life as Odin and starting a bar fight while unknowingly intoxicated by mistletoe. Also, the movie, "Klaus," is absolutely worth a watch. No connection beyond title, but fun.

Missing a Christmas release is totally understandable and expected given the circumstances. At least we got to hear, "Frank Miller, you're off the Nice list" before 2024.
