Just ordered the Heresy III brand new.These were hard to find here in EU. Everyone was only offering the IV: Dont want the port and too expensive for me. Currently running KEF Q900. Haven't heard horns before, at least here in my apartment. I also have.a SVS PB2000 subwoofer and minidsp + Audyssey XT 32 (Denon X3500H). I think i will be fine with the "lower" base. I wanted the III because its sealed. Should get them in a week, will be planning on raising them about 40cm. Main reason and the "aha" moment to get these was the appreciation and realisation of the importance of a tight mid base slam and the "speed" these should give. I usually listen pretty quiet during the evening, around 75db + dynamic EQ at -15 offset. (about 8db hot). Hey Z, what do you think? Will i get an improvement or a paradigm shift? 😎

I have the Heresy IIIs, and use them as maxi-bookshelves with a sub. They work great. They will go to "death ray" levels if you ask them to, but they are pretty amazing. I find that they portray acoustic percussion in an incredibly realistic way. I run them full range, with the sub coming in to boost up the low frequencies. The sealed version certainly rolls off below 60 hertz, and needs a sub to get the slam we'd want as modern listener.

Originally. the Heresy was intended as a center fill speaker for use with a pair of Klipschorns. As such it was designed for low distortion from the mid-bass up and to let the big folded corner horns do the heavy lifting for the deep bass. The Heresy [I] to III were sealed boxes, acoustic suspension/smallish infinite baffles. The story is that when Paul W. Klipsch was designing this speaker with a direct firing woofer without a bass horn it was heresy, hence the name. Yeah, old dude here.

Take the speakers down off the ridiculous pedestals for starters, Next situate the speakers each in a corner and utilize the room dynamics acoustically as Paul Klipsch had originally intended, as with all the heritage series speakers all you need is two separate corners and the wedges you had under them originally trust me on this you will rediscover those speakers.

Came to comments to say the same. No reason to go through all the trouble and expense to add subwoofers (to do it right and match the quality of the Heresy, it will take two subs and a DSP or active crossover and multiple amps - as he scratches the surface on) - which is a hole not worth going down and will be a source of endless frustration and constant tweaking for Z. By the time you've properly figured out your subs, you are taking up more physical space and spending more money than if you just bought better speakers from Klipsch. As he said, these are the cheapest Heritage Klipsch speakers. They were originally designed to be a center channel speaker! Yes, they've been redesigned a lot, but these are still Klipsch's bookshelf models. Get the damn full size already. Get the Cornwalls or even better, a pair of Chorus IIs (used - because they don't make them anymore), which replaced the Cornwalls before they brought them back with a re-design.

Been following reviews for the Heresy IVs for a while and this is the best review so far. Some reviewers said to match these with a tube amp to temper the brightness; Zeo's better, cheaper solution? DSP. Some reviewers have said it's not the best for modern music but good enough bass, and only excellent for the type of music they prefer; Zeo's solution? Cheap dual/sub. Efficiency discrepancy between horns and woofs at high volumes? Bi-amp w/ DSP and subs. Tells you exactly what you need (or what you don't) for what you want out of these speakers.. even numbers for dsp. All are affordable options too. Great fk'n review.. only criticism is no upside down demo lol. I really need to start saving up for these D:

To answer the question at 30:18, assuming the drivers behave like a linear non-deforming piston (they don't exactly but it's close enough for small excursions), the volume displaced by one is given by: V=(1/4) h pi d^2, where h is the driver excursion distance, and d is the driver diameter. Equating this volume with the volume of a second driver, d_2, that will have an excursion of h_2, we can simplify to: (h_2)/h = (d/(d_2))^2. In other words, the relative displacement of two drivers is equal to the inverse of their relative diameters squared. In the case of a 12-inch vs a 4-inch driver, this means that the 4-inch driver requires 9 times the excursion of the 12-inch driver to achieve the same volume displaced. Obviously, you could plug in any driver diameters to that formula for quick calculations.
@skizzlemane1
@skizzlemane1 4 жыл бұрын
"C" wyrm so what’s the answer? 😃 I’m curious now and geometry is not one of my strong suits
@Cwyrm
@Cwyrm 4 жыл бұрын
skizzlemane1 Well, using the formula, we can find that a 4-inch driver would need to move 54 mm to displace the same amount of air as a 12-inch driver moving 6 mm. As for the other sizes, A 5.25 inch driver would need to move 31.3 mm. A 6 inch driver would need to move 24 mm. An 8 inch driver would need to move 13.5 mm. A 10 inch driver would need to move 8.64 mm And of course these are all only approximate; the larger the excursion the more error there is in the number, since in reality the driver does not deform perfectly linearly. Hope that helps!

Last summer I spent a nice chunk of that time repairing/refurbishing a sansui sp-5500x that I got for pretty cheap. The cross over needed new caps, the woofers needed work before their surrounds were completely gone and the all of the horns were blown. Caps were an easy fix spare the horse glue holding down the old rubicon and the woofer was salvagable even though they used While I was able to find replacement parts for the squawker/tweeter horns I could not find an original replacement part for the super tweeter horn but I found a set of super tweeters that uses the same driver material found in the larger horn and the super tweeter and normal tweeter have matching sound signatures so it worked out far better than I ever anticipated in the end. Anyways I have to agree, there is something to three-ways and large speakers like this. Those drivers simply do not move as much as you expect them to move and having each driver doing less just leads to the whole thing sounding so clean. I can see why klipsch makes these style of speakers still as does JBL in their synthesis line.

The Heresy have amazing low end set up correctly, in the corners, on the floor angled up, and with vaulted ceilings, thereby effectively turning the room's floor and walls into extensions of the horns and virtually horn-loading the woofer. Properly harnessed, Heresy bass sounds fast, like a giant electrostatic subwoofer.
@gaza4543
@gaza4543 Жыл бұрын
I agree with this though make no mistake if you want bass you need a subwoofer . Kind of think the reviewer created a load of problems for himself. There is a reason for the tilt and would explain the horns time alignment/sound pressure problems as the volume increases
@xxxYYZxxx
@xxxYYZxxx Жыл бұрын
@@gaza4543 I owned a pair of Heresy's decades ago, and set them up wrong, per conventional speakers. Eventually I set them up more correctly on accident, but now I understand the acoustics better. The corner-loading helps the bass tremendously, while nullifying side wall reflections, while the tilt nullifies floor reflections. It's all about the setup with Heresy's, not their raw output in free space. Any sub better pump out 120db just to keep up.

Your frequency balance problems when you put them on stands was probably because you put them on stands. That put the horns directly on ear axis, for one, and more importantly, you lost several dB of bass because you were no longer getting floor reinforcement of those frequencies. They're voiced to be on the floor, with all the acoustic effects that has. When you put them up in the air, that's gone.

Brandon Burr It’s nice to see Z reviewing klipsch heritage 👍🏼 a klipsch hereitage line review is incomplete without a tube amp imo though. Tubes and klipsch go hand in hand. Putting my pair of heresy 1’s on stands and in the corners made a huge difference in soundstage and bass in my living room. They were on the floor and against the wall before and they were uninspiring. But even in their new position you can still tell exactly where the low frequency cuts out and there’s just nothing below that point. So unless you’re ok with missing a significant portion of the information in your recordings below the cut off point, you need subs. But if you’re going to add subs, might as well get Cornwall’s. And if you’re putting Cornwall’s in the corners, you might as well get klipschorns. 🤷🏻‍♂️ which is what I ended up doing. Problem is my used klipschorns cost me the same as this new pair of heresy iv’s. Actually less when you factor in the subwoofers and stands. That’s the problem with klipsch. I love klipsch and have for my whole audiophile career. But the vintage heritage line are so robust and last forever. For me it doesn’t justify spending 10x more on a new pair. If you have the space I recommend used Cornwall’s or klipschorns. La scalas and belles run into the same bass problem as the heresies.

If there is a driver balance problem, you cannot fix it by normal biamping. You have to have different gain control for each channel. Using a dsp or AV amp is one solution otherwise you have to use separate gain controls or attenuators for each amp.

. . . all that is not necessary, my Bra. Utilize a high pass filter between your subs output, and the Heritics, buy it set at 100hz. No freqs below 100 enter the Hereseys . . . the big 12” instrument speaker, then becomes an excellent mid-base/lower-mid driver, with the subs crossing with a 3d order, 18db per octave roll off, doing the down an dirty . . . try it, puts nothing in the signal path . . . you need powered subs, though. Parts Express sells the filters 😊.

Three weeks ago, I received my pandemic speakers, new Cornwall IVs and my sheer joy has been similar to Z's. One of the reasons I chose them was that I could save $1k on the amp. I don't need the subs either. I did raise them up six inches and put them on wheels so that they could be turned depending on the sound stage that I want. 16'x12' room.

Z! I really like the direction you are going with the Heresy! Are you going to install two more crown and two 15" Subs? Klipsch makes them? The Klipsch guys say it's good to listen to them positioned so the horns cross in front of your ears? Did you consider the Cornwall IV? (short for corner wall ) It sure makes a lot of sound without moving, doesn't it?

The JBL L100 which is similar in size also really needs to be elevated beyond the shorty stands they offer. Which may be why JBL classifies them as bookshelf speakers instead of floor standers. Anyway, the surround on the Klipsch is made of treated cloth and is known as an accordion surround. It's very commonly used in high efficiency pro sound drivers. The cabinet for these is now and always has been undersized for a twelve inch driver to produce truly deep bass. But it is not strictly a mid-bass driver as it will play well down into the 50 hertz range which is most certainly in the bass frequencies. However, in an elevated situation such as this you probably will see a dramatic roll off starting around 65 hertz. But as Z said the sound you get in your room will vary. In any event his assessment is accurate. You need a sub. But then to get the best performance from pretty much any speaker that doesn't have multiple large subs built in you need a sub, or two. Yes, really. You think you don't until you try them and then, wow, what a difference. Now, I know a lot of people think bass is the only reason to pay more than sixteen dollars for a speaker and will think these are a rip off. Other folks will fuss about the lack of extension on the Klipsch but then pay five thousand bucks for a pair of bookshelf speakers that roll off below 150 hertz and claim they don't need subs for them. Okay. Truth is these speakers have a lot of competition at three grand. But just as each of these competitors can do something the Klipsch can't. The Klipsch's can do scale, dynamics and realism in a way that I've only heard from one other speaker at the same price point.

That's why the PS audio exchange exist they have kits where you cannot rebalance the speakers where you can bring more bass out of them and cut back on the mid and I by her ex exchanging Parts off of the crossover just by changing certain pieces off of the crossover board you can change the efficiency of the speaker and they do sell kits so you can change them up and you won't have that problem anymore and you won't have to run two amps to one speaker

Saw a video where a designer said higher efficiency ( Klipsch law) reduces distortion and you get more sound from less cone excursion. That’s why that huge cone barely moves when rockin Think of Bruce lee’s three inch punch that sends the guy across the room. The big cone is hitting harder and faster so it doesn’t need a three inch throw... bro

now they have my attention. it took your review to make me even want to return to looking at these. my brother in law had a pair of these in the 80's and i hated them. he ran them with a old school Pioneer 100w/channel receiver that ran them to incredible sound levels but it was nothing but an assault of mid-range that nearly killed me. their clarity was incredible but there was no full-range sound to them. this could get interesting. thanks Zeos...

I was watching another vid about Klipsch and they stated that the Heresy was originally designed to be a center channel speaker to the Klipschorns. That explains why they don't need to go deep. The speakers that need to be looked at are the Fortes as they were designed to be stereo speakers.

Large woofers are the secret to star spangled awesome sauce! Why? Because beaming my friends! It's actually a good thing for frequencies below 1000khz. And big woofers help a lot to focus frequencies below 500hz. They won't achieve cardioid bass by any means, but they're much better than having 2 five inch woofers. Honestly, MTM designs have never made any sense to me. The center to center distance is never close enough to avoid comb filtering in the mid range (intermodulation distortion), plus they spread too much sound to all the side walls. MTM trades everything for a symmetrical vertical lobing pattern. Smh, It's so bloody stupid. It's a total failure, and I'd be glad if they chuck all D'Appolitos into the sea (not referring to center channels). Use small woofers and too much sound is hitting the side walls and floor and ceiling. It creates a muddied sound and is unclear. Small speaker drivers are best for very large rooms, or heavily treated rooms, because they're able to spread the sound far and wide. Oddly though, they lack the ability to move much air which won't fill a large room. So stacking small drivers in a line array configuration is sometimes good for large rooms. Physics affecting audio is quite peculiar, and the general public is oh so very lost and confused. If you have a small to medium room, a large 10 to 12 inch woofer which doesn't have much excursion is your secret weapon to achieve better clarity and sound staging. Small mid-range drivers are also a poor design choice for most homes. Go with a 6.5 inch (not a 4 inch) and harsh frequencies from 2 to 4khz won't be bouncing all around the room-- depending where you set your crossover point. Cardioid bass is the goal, along with a good directivity index result, especially for most home environments. Here's a good setup for increased sound staging, clarity, and decreased listening fatigue. A 3 way with a subwoofer. One 10 or 12 inch HiFi driver, just like the heresy's. High excursion not required. We want it to be able to play down to 60hz with ease, but below that is the job of the sub woofer! Possibly use 2 eight or nine inch woofers. Then a 6.5 inch mid range. Crossover region ~250 to ~4khz. Yes, moving the crossover point an octave from either of these points would still be fine and understandable. But those are general boundaries. A ~1 inch tweeter. And the sub. I'm not a fan of compression drivers. What's the point? Most people don't listen at high enough volumes to have a driver which typically doesn't measure as well. If going for a 2 way configuration. Consider 2 seven or eight inch drivers, and a ~1 inch tweeter. Focus on HiFi drivers without massive excursion or crazy bass specs. You want mid bass and mid range clarity. The sub can always pick up the low end. The crossover point will be ~2,000. Older speaker designs had a lot going for them and now with the better drivers of today, they've been perfected. Granted, they don't look like slim sexy towers. That's the only drawback.

I love the idea of legacy klipsch dpeakers. BUT everytime i see a review of one or the last time i spent the day at their engineering facility, i want to build new cabinets so that the driver acoustic centers are lined up and adjust the crossovers to take advantage of the increase in coherencey. After spending years designing pro sounds systems using speakers with woofers misaligned with the horns, i learned to digitally time align the drivers. The increase in coherence was revalatory.
@ZReviews
@ZReviews 4 жыл бұрын
I was playing with delay between the horns and the woofer. Any pointers?
@jked7463
@jked7463 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZReviews it depends on how you are doing it. Are you using the klipsch crossover or using a dsp for the crossover? The klipsch crossover parts are chosen to try to offset the time alignment by altering phase. When using the stock crossover, get a dsp with open architecture software. You split the signal, cross h.f., up, the l.f. down and add a delay to the shorter depth driver . Then recombine the signals. Use the steepest slope available. Slide the crossover points up and down together until you get as little frequecy response changes as possible. Measure physical offset and start with that for a time delay. Use a time alignment function on test gear like from parts express or dual FFT analyzer to fine tune the delay. Then adjust one crossover point, slope etc. to flattenn response.
