First 5PM newscast after September 10, 1995 affiliation switch.
The posting of this video is designed to facilitate criticism, commentary, scholarship, and research relating to the television broadcasting industry, and for purposes of historic preservation, consistent with the provisions set forth in Section 107 of Title 17, United States Code.

In 1995 both Dallas and Fort Worth Texas was affected by the affiliation switch. It affected KDFW ch 4 KTVT ch 11 and KDAF ch 33 KDFW was our original CBS affiliate. Now they are our FOX affiliate KTVT was our well loved and well known independent tv station and if you had a Big C Band satellite dishes, you could watch KTVT on it as well. Just like WTBS, KTVT was a superstation and as I mentioned before, it was carried on Satellite and Cable companies in the 1980s and until 1995. KTVT is now our current CBS affiliate. KDAF 33 was our original FOX affiliate untill 7/1/1995 . KDAF left FOX to become a WB network affiliate. Now KDAF is currently a CW affiliate.

There was an affiliation swap in Providence involving WPRI and WLNE that occurred the same day that the trade deal involving KCNC and KUTV took place. CBS announced the purchase of WPRI in March 1995, a purchase which was completed in the middle of the summer. WPRI was originally affiliated with CBS but became an ABC affiliate in 1977. In November, Westinghouse bought CBS, requiring the company to sell WPRI due to a significant signal overlap with WBZ, which had joined CBS back in January.

Denver Broncos games would return to KCNC three years later (most games, anyway) when CBS got the AFC contract, which the Broncos are part of (KDVR only airs games when the Broncos play host to an NFC team, as an aside); KMGH, at the time, broadcasted Monday Night games involving the Broncos. I am not sure whether they do so today, even after it MNF moved to cable in 2006. Lastly, KUSA airs Broncos games nowadays when they play on NBC's Sunday Night Football; they aired the team's first-ever Super Bowl win in Super Bowl XXXII in 1998 (which was NBC's last NFL game broadcast for eight years).

Channels 7 and 9 were big winners in this Denver television musical chairs game. It kind of reminded me of what happened very early this year with channels WISH 8.1, WTTV 4.1, and WTTV 4.2 in Indianapolis. Channel 8 lost their affiliation with CBS, forcing that station to defect to channel WTTV 4.1, formerly The CW, while bumping that independent's position to WTTV 4.2 (formerly The CW), while WISH 8.1 became the new CW affiliate. But unlike in Denver's case, there were digital subchannels involved too, in Indianapolis.

Justin Hill Affiliation switches have slowed down for some time but it still exists in some areas. February 2016 was when NBC and CBS switched local channels in North Carolina.

@@KevinPiland Yes, WNCN became a CBS affiliate and WRAL became a NBC affiliate.

@@sillygoose635 The last big broadcast realignment happened in 2006 when The WB merged with UPN to form The CW. Nearly half of those former WB and UPN affiliates switched to The CW, while the former WB and UPN stations that were left out of the deal with The CW were to become affiliated with MyNetworkTV.

@@sillygoose635 Some other recent affiliation switches happened in San Diego, California recently: XETV-TDT 6, Tijuana, Baja California Norte, Mexico/San Diego California switched their affiliation from The CW to the Mexican TV network Canal 5 in 2017, effectively ending XETV's run as a Mexican-owned English-speaking TV station for the past 60+ years. The CW is now found on KFMB-TV (CBS) 8.2. XHDTV-TDT 49, Tecate, Baja California Norte, Mexico/San Diego California switched their affiliation from MyNetworkTV to Mexican TV network Milenio Televisión in 2018. The MyNetworkTV affiliation has now become the secondary affiliation of KFMB-TV 8.2, The CW San Diego.

The Fox Television-owned Chris-Craft stations switched from UPN to MyNetworkTV, including WWOR-TV 9.

Around the same time the three-station switch in Denver is happening, another three-station switch is happening in Baltimore: WJZ-TV 13, formerly ABC, becomes CBS WMAR-TV 2, formerly NBC, becomes ABC WBAL-TV 11, formerly CBS, becomes NBC

And i don't know if you heard from the report but Antonio Mora also welcomed WLNE-TV 6 in Rhode Island, Providence formerly CBS, becomes ABC

It's interesting to learn that Channel 2 was the only station in Baltimore affiliated with all "Big Three" networks. First, with CBS (1948-1981), then with NBC (1981-1995) and now ABC (1995-present).

On September 10, 1995 in Philadelphia, PA KYW-TV switched from NBC to CBS, and WCAU-TV switched from CBS to NBC.

Philadelphia definitely needed an NBC station to begin with. News4 Denver did the story about that aspect.

It has been 22 years since Denver's Big Switch happened at Channels 4, 7, and 9 in the Mile High City, FOX 31 was not affected. Just 1 year earlier, a massive wave in Network Affiliation Switches happened in Phoenix when Channels 3, 5, 10, and 15 switched Networks where ABC CBS FOX and a newly independent station got relocated, only NBC and Channel 12 did not change in the Valley of the Sun. And everything is now digital, including its TV Subchannels on their local stations in those markets.

Subchannels are strictly digital, part of the ATSC bandplan. We never had that luxury growing up with analog NTSC broadcasts.

KMGH replaced Dan Rather with the tag team of Peter Jennings and Ted Koppel. Jennings was sandwiched between KMGH's 5pm and 6pm newscasts, and Koppel was the night topper after Ernie and Bertha at 10pm.

Minneapolis/St. Paul had an affiliate change in 1979 WCCO Ch. 4 kept CBS KSTP Ch. 5 went from NBC to ABC KMSP Ch. 9 went from ABC to Independent WTCN Ch. 11 went from Independent to NBC

WTCN became KARE in 1988. WTCI is channel 45 in Chattanooga!

@@MegaJuanTrinidad At first, KMSP-TV 9 affiliated with Fox in 1986, but abandoned Fox in 1988 after they were not pleased with the Fox network's ratings and program schedule at the time, with the Fox affiliation moving to what later became WFTC 29. KMSP-TV 9 was an independent station once again from 1988 until 1995, when KMSP-TV 9 became Minneapolis's charter UPN affiliate. In 2002, KMSP-TV 9 would return to Fox with UPN moving to WFTC 29.

Atlanta knew about The Big Switch in 1994, when WAGA Channel 5 went from CBS to Fox, WATL Channel 36 went from Fox to The WB, WGNX Channel 46 went from an independent station to CBS, and WVEU Channel 69 went from an independent station to UPN! But 14 years earlier, in 1980, WSB Channel 2 went from NBC to ABC, and conversely enough, ABC affiliate WXIA Channel 11 became NBC!

The big affiliation switch in Atlanta also affected another station in Toccoa, Georgia: WNEG-TV 32, an independent station who switched to CBS, since channel 46's signal was inaccessible in Northeast Georgia, another part of the Atlanta market. Today, that station is now known as WGTA 32 and it is now affiliated with MeTV. * CBS Atlanta, Georgia/Toccoa, Georgia (former)--(WGNX 46 and WNEG-TV 32) When Atlanta had two CBS affiliates, it was similar to these other markets with two different stations carrying the same affiliate at the same time (not including semi-satellites): * ABC Boston, Massachusetts/Manchester, New Hampshire (current)--(WCVB-TV 5 and WMUR-TV 9) * ABC Grand Rapids, Michigan/Kalamazoo, Michigan (current)--(WZZM 13 and WOTV 41) * ABC Tampa Bay, Florida/Sarasota, Florida (current)--(WFTS-TV 28 and WWSB 40) * NBC Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/Atlantic City, New Jersey (former)--(WCAU-TV 10 and WMGM-TV 40) (WMGM-TV 40 now carries the True Crime Network)

KMGH-TV 7 switch to ABC prompted McGraw-Hill Broadcasting's sister CBS stations WCPO 9 and KERO-TV 23 to change over to ABC a year later...

One year later... WJKS-TV 17 of Jacksonville, Florida loses its ABC affiliation to WBSG-TV 21/WJXX 25, gains The WB network affiliation and discontinues its newscast. WJKS-TV changes its callsign to WJWB "WB17."
