No talking, just walking. Exploring the English Countryside. A nice gentle walk around the town of Knaresborough. A picturesque town, with one of many features being the railway viaduct that goes over the River Nidd. We start walking along side the river, before walking up into the town, around the old castle grounds, visiting the churches before walking back along the river … A lovely walk. Do enjoy :)

About Dave's Walks
Hi there, I‘m Dave! I've lived in the English Countryside all my life, and I love it! I enjoy walking, and couldn’t help but notice just how beautiful the UK can be away from the cities. I found myself inspired and decided to get some camera equipment and make some walking videos so I can share my walks of the beautiful countryside with everyone!
I will mainly focus on small towns, villages, picturesque landscapes, rolling hills and mountains, forests and canals, all along the coastlines in England, Scotland, Wales, and who knows maybe one day further afar!
I upload every Sunday 11.45am GMT (3.45am PST) (6.45am EST) (5.15pm IST) (9.15pm ACST)

Thank you, from far away Australia! I managed to discover this marvellous place when I booked a b&b quite by chance, down by the river, what a lovely spot, fondly remembered. Thanks too for showing where those other steps come out opposite the station, missed them last time. Would recommend Knaresborough to anyone visiting Yorkshire from overseas, Harrogate is close by and all the wonders that are York about 45min (?)….. Betty’s tea rooms in both ! 😎

I love Knaresborough and Harrogate (and also the Nidd Gorge walk nearby is beautiful.) The only problem I have with Harrogate is that they seem to hide their bloody Railway Station! I'd travelled from York to Knaresborough and then walked from there, through Nidd Gorge, then into Harrogate to get the train back, but though when walking through the town, I saw lots of trains passing over viaducts, when it came to catching one, I had to walk through a shopping centre in order to find the station.
@DaveBartlett
@DaveBartlett Жыл бұрын
In the North of England, Harrogate is often descibed as "Surrey, North Yorkshire!" - The upper middle-class section of Harrogate residents, (and there are a hell of a lot of them living there,) when talking about 'going into town', are referring to London! 🙄

I would ecnourage everyone to take the climb up the steps from the riverside to the castle grounds. It's an excellent climb with classic views of the River Nidd and the railway viaduct over it from strategic points, though I appreciate it wouldn't be practical, doing it safely, camera in-hand, (especially when you'd need to climb up backwards for the best effect. 😉) It's a climb my family and I always used to make on each visit to Knaresborough, but the strange thing is that even if everyone in the party counts the steps on the way, and agrees on the total number by the time the top is reached, it's almost certain that the next time you do the climb, you'll come up with a different total! 🤔

That was a good walk as it always is. There was a time when you were going up how many flights of steps? Ten or fifteen and each of them had about ten steps to walk up, I thought when you finally finished walking up them, were you ready to pass out? Woo!!! That was a lot of steps!!!!

Knaresborough Castle's state of disrepair isn't solely down to the ravages of battle. Knaresborough began the English Civil War as a Royalist stronghold, but after eventually falling to the Parliamentarians, to reduce the possibility of it being used against them, should it change hands again, The residents of the town were given permission (and even encouragement) to dismantle large parts of the castle for use as building materials! It would appear that the ravages of greedy builders does more damage that the ravages of both battle and time!

There are lots of great examples of the Trompe-l'œil art technique in Knaresborough, but apart from passing glances of the Lady in the Window at 16:47 and of the Roundhead & the Cavelier at 1:00:49, you seem to have missed them all. There are also examples at 'Blind Jacks' pub in the Market Place, but you seemed to avoid that area entirely, (so we didn't even get to see Blind Jack's statue on the bench.) At least you managed to avoid the tourist trap that is "Mother Shipton's Cave", and I applaud you for that!
@DavesWalks
@DavesWalks Жыл бұрын
I have to say I have never heard of the Trompe-l'œil art technique, sounds intriguing, sorry to have missed out on the examples. I had no prep time really for this video, I had a passing opportunity to film there, and took it. Ideally much more planning goes into my walks. Sometimes they are just unexpected opportunities I have to take. Glad I avoided the tourist trap though. I am not a fan of those.. 😃👍
@DaveBartlett
@DaveBartlett Жыл бұрын
@@DavesWalks Trompe-l'œil ('deceive the eye') is the art of making pictures look like real events, and the UK version became popular for the duration of the window tax, (from 1696 to 1851,) when properties were taxed, based on the area of glass in their windows; (though all of the examples in Knaresborough today originated much later as local art events.) When the window tax was in effect, homes of the rich would still be erected with the same number of windows, for aesthetic balance, but certain windows would be bricked up in existing buildings, and replaced by brick panels in new ones, and elements of Trompe-l'œil would be used to make it seem as though scenes were taking place in those artificial 'windows'. An excellent 'modern' example in Knaresborough is the 'Roundhead & Cavalier' (opposite 'The Mitre' by the train station,) where the Roundhead appears to be emptying water out of first floor window over the door, while the Cavaliar is sniping at him from the second floor window above.
@DavesWalks
@DavesWalks Жыл бұрын
well I learnt a few things there, thank you! Why did we implement a window tax? I am guessing it wasn't popular so was abolished some 150 years later..
@DaveBartlett
@DaveBartlett Жыл бұрын
@@DavesWalks I believe it was a form of tax based on wealth, when income tax was frowned upon because that would have meant people had to disclose their income to the government, which at the time was seen as an unacceptable intrusion by government into 'private matters'.
@DaveBartlett
@DaveBartlett Жыл бұрын
@@DavesWalks Reportedly, it's believed that the phrase 'daylight robbery' originated from the time of the window tax, though I always took that to mean being openly stolen from, as opposed to being burgled when you were asleep in your bed.
