I am making upgrades to my Oscillating Sander / Spindle Sander that include adding an extension knob for changing from belt to spindle sanding and adding a different dust collection system to reduce the dust this sander can spread in the workshop. The oscillating sander works much like a mounted belt sander and is a great addition to any shop.

A suggestion: put a slot, not a hole for mounting the dust collector. Then you can mount it closer for shorter pieces.

Nice additions Colin! I have that sander & am going to incorporate those additions as well. I will also use the rear dust port on the machine at the same time, which should allow for removal of most of the sanded dust. Thanks for the idea!

If you put the bracket on the other side of the hose, you could probably still use the included bolt to hold down the new dust collector. Obviously it depends on where you drill the hole and how big the hose adapter is, but moving the bracket buys you some room to work.

Thanks Colin I just finished mine this morning. Works great I cut a groove in mine for the base where thumb screw goes and then router half way down for half inch plywood never have to remove thumb screw that way and I still use steel angle stop. You’re r a good inspiration

As always, lots of great practical ideas along with the core presentation. The knob extension is a good idea for people with arthritis or other grip problems. On the dust collector sled, could you use a jigsaw to cut a slot from the back edge to the hole for the bolt? That way you could leave the bolt in place and loosen it to slide the sled in place when you want to attach the dust collection. I'm afraid I'd lose or "borrow" the bolt and forget where I left it.

Thanks, nice looking addition. Does this replace the need to connect to the port in the rear? Is there any need to figure out a way to hook them both up with some sort of a y connector between the machine and the vacuum?

Hello Colin, Great video to watch as I have just purchased this particular sander. I don't know if you will be able to answer this question but what percentage would you guess is entering through the dust port you installed. I have limited depth on my bench and wonder if a port just on the top for belt sanding would suffice.

I’ve been wanting one of these for years and finally bit the bullet today. When I got it set up I found that I have one problem that if I can’t fix then it’s going back to HD. The movable table top does not line up correctly with the stationary top. It sits a little bit proud which makes it catch on the piece of wood I’m sanding. I think that is unsafe in that it could catch and go flying across the workshop. There are some set screws at the hinge but that is only for making the movable top be Square with the spindle. Only thing I can think of is pulling out the screws that act as hinges and somehow making them eccentric in order to raise or lower the lip of the movable part of the table top. However I’m not sure that will work or that I can do it. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks, J.

Evil minds think alike! I mounted a rectangular sweeper attachment with a clamp to the table. Since I have a small hose to work with, it fits nicely on the sand and does the job. Gonna make one of those knobs . The only other thing I added was a wooden cleat on the table to hold the cord when not in use.

What did you do with the "factory" dust port on the rear of the sander? Is it just left open?
@rjtumble
@rjtumble 4 жыл бұрын
I was going to ask that too. I was thinking building a little Y connector for back there would be nice, let you plug the new one in as an extension and have dust collection from both ports. Maybe this one is working so well that it's not necessary.
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 4 жыл бұрын
@@rjtumble I'm thinking that port (built in) works well for the dust on the downward stroke. So yeah, both makes sense.
@martys8349
@martys8349 3 жыл бұрын
@@rjtumble I was thinking of having a goose-neck off of a Y so one could clean up afterwards, but you have a better idea. The only thing is, this dust collection gizmo crowds you out of using the rounded area of the sander. I guess you can spin it away. Maybe I'll try to figure out how to get it further out of the way... I'm not sure just how.

If you think you'll ever need an oscillating belt sander like the one in this video, it's a great choice as the belt can be removed and an oscillating drum sander insert takes its place. Boom, two tools in one. A random orbit sander, either with the round or quarter-sheet rectangular head is great for larger/panel work. The vertical/horizontal belt Sanders with the disk on the side can be handy for wood or metal work. The vertical 1 or 2 inch belt machines are more of a belt grinder than a sander, they are very aggressive with wood or metal depending on the grit of belt used. It all depends on what you think you might need. But if contemplating an oscillating drum sander, might as well put up a few extra bucks for a convertable machine like this one in the video. Many manufacturers make these.

Its a shelf liner. Cut it to fit what you need. But be warned, buy the bigger roll, because once you start using it, you'll find a use for it in all kinds of different applications. (Also makes a great pad to replace worn felts on the bottoms of lamps and other table top items.)

You should make these sleds for people who have this machine.. theres alot of beginners out here and as also a beginner I just wanted to make crafts and the sanding of the wood is a huge problem when you have disabilities but when you see belt sander that makes things easier except for dust that can accumulate, so I'm just saying you could probably make these and sell on Facebook or esty shop ex for people like me who just want to do craft stuff but want to safe from dust and such.. you would probably sell many that could pay for a new tool or offset the price of your sander......mikelle ny mom learning about tools to make crafts to help with stress..

The knob on the right side is used to adjust the belt. It lets you nudge the sandpaper up and down, but too loose and the belt will slip off the top.
