An old, rusty radiator with nasty cracks - does this picture look familiar? If you have such a thing in your home, don’t write it off just yet! Installing a new radiator is a costly and daunting task, but as long as the old one performs nicely and doesn't have cold spots or bottom there’s no need to do it! Buy a tin of paint instead and give the radiator a new life within a few hours and at surprisingly low cost.
This video will guide you through how to paint a radiator effortlessly, as long as you follow a few basic rules you should have no problems.
You can choose any colour you like so the radiator either blends into the background or becomes a feature of the room depending on your taste. Never consider using normal everyday paints as they aren't heat resistant, so check the store for specially designed products which won't be affected by high temperatures.
* It sounds like a common sense, but make sure the radiator is cold before you apply the paint and don’t allow it to get warm again until the coat is completely dry, or your hard work might be ruined.
* Make sure you remove all rusty spots. Use fine or medium grade sanding paper and a spatula if the layer of paint is thick. Don't leave anything that will make your coat of paint uneven such as any lumps of old paint or rust.
* Use either a cloth or a vacuum cleaner to dust and clean the radiator.
* Shake the tin of paint vigorously as the ingredients can and do separate. Stirring ensures that the colour and the consistency of the finish will look great.
* Apply a thick, even coat of paint. One layer should be enough but check the tin for instructions.

Thanks for the information know too get going, I see you used a can of tin paint, will a spray can be just as good and what's the difference in results from a spray paint and a tin of paint. Thanks
@k-nemo

You can use spray if you want to but remember that spraying is more difficult and needs some experience to do a smooth layer of the same thickness. You can use a small roller if you don't want to use a brush. The paint I used is very durable and really needs one coat but you can use a different brand. People think that using spray will give a nicer, smoother coat but I think you can achieve the same result with a paint brush or a roller.

Thank you for the video! I have a bathroom rad, that is completely rusted and has huge flakes and peels. It is pretty much completely rusted top to bottom, and it will be a long job for me. I was wondering if there is any thing I can do before sanding to speed it up? Like a wire metal brush? If I only sand it I think it will take days and the majority of my patience/sanity lol
@k-nemo
@k-nemo 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching The wire metal brush will be useful but only in places where the paint is peeling. I used a spatula 1:40. Sand paper is the best, particularly to smoth everything at the end. Don't remove all paint, just in places where it is peeling but the surface must be as smooth as possible. I have made another video about radiator painting, you might want to check it up. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7NirJymxtmxfoE.html Good luck:)

@@k-nemo Thank you for the quick reply! That is less of a pain if not all paint needs to be removed. And I have a spatula. I hope you don't mind another question but I have two different sandpapers here at the house, p100 and quartz paper 2 & 1/2 (that's all it says on the back). Which would be better?
@k-nemo
@k-nemo 3 жыл бұрын
@@debbieflanagan7506 No problem. 2 &1/2 will be too rough. A 100 is better, slightly too fine.I used 80 in this video and 60 in the other but 100 should do a job as well.

I was told not to offer scrap. And also told to lightly sand it. Idea is to just flatten surface excess comes off and then to have thought surface all over so new paint sticks

How thick is the metal on radiators? Can scraping rust off cause a leak?

you should have least used oil undercoat first gloss by itself on bare steel wont adhere properly. a really good way is to seal with boiled linseed oil on the bare steel

I probably wouldn't choose a calypso myself whilst i did DIY but it's very upbeat & cheerful ! & like someone said, viewers could " find mute" if it's not your thing", I like smooth piano or somedays, or 80's hits when I decorate ! These vids are useful, my bathroom rad needs sanding so Thanks @k-nemo
