They did win the last game in the old Boston Garden then they went on to eliminate MJ and the Bulls and the Pacers before getting swepped by the Rockets then the next year swepped by MJ and the Bulls. The thing is, this style of play was a MAJOR departure from the fast-break styles of the 80s. The difference in the 80s is that a lot of the good players could hit mid-range shots consistently, which is something of a lost art now. The current emphasis on hitting 3s came about to counter the ball-hogging iso offenses that grew from the emphasis on defense in the 90s. A team with someone like Carmelo Anthony taking the whole shot clock to make a single basket is going to get emulsified by a team with 3-4 shooters that can consistently hit 3s, but were effective in breaking down defensive game plans in the early-mid 2000s because they rendered all that shot-stopping effort irrelevant.

Those guys were already champions when Riley came on board and the Lakers fed off Magic and Kareem’s confidence and winning attitude. The Knicks didn’t have that key guy, like Jordan, Magic of Isiaiah, who was that superstar leader type player who would carry them through in crunch time.
