To those saying that isolating the thumb this way is too difficult in real life, it can be done at full speed against a resisting opponent but it takes a tremendous amount of practice. After working on these techniques for almost 15 years I can do this type of "palasut" or passing motion without any thought. Also keep in mind that this is only one tool in the Kali / Silat toolbox. If you fail to secure this disarm you flow immediately into something else. One key point that many do not grasp is that the Kali / Silat approach is not based on trying to immediately control the knife. Instead it's based on achieving a positional advantage. Once you have that, you attempt to control the knife arm, then the hand, then get your disarm. Positional advantage + strike > arm > hand > disarm.

You only have to get cut once for everything else to go flying out the window. Especially if your opponent does the sowing machine attack sticking you over and over again. As Danny Inosanto says a knife is often felt before it is seen

They taught us the same thing despite all the training we had on knife attacks. First priority: Run away if possible. If you have to fight use the most basic technique you can to control the knife arm. Forget trying to trap the hand (it moves very fast and is hard to see). 'Watch the elbow to get an idea where the knife is going.'

ive trained briefly in balintawak escrima and even though i enjoyed it, i will still never put my complete faith in any self defense system against knives. never. you are going to get cut and even worse, this is fact. but what i liked about this was when ron demonstrated the ‘point of no return’ - the closest distance where you can’t run away anymore because the attacker will just stab you in the back when you turn your body. therefore, these knife demonstrations/techniques are SOLELY for those ‘point of no return’ situations where you HAVE to commit and engage in stopping the attackers knife hand. just hope that youre not damaged enough afterwards so you can get to a hospital and survive.

my thoughts on this is that in a real life or death situation with adrenaline going and an aggressive unpredictable opponent that is constantly moving the knife or more likely trying the sewing machine attack, i'm not sure that the coordination and fine motor skills and reactions would be good enough to isolate the thumb and if you haven't got the thumb then those techniques don't work. i have tried pressure testing knife defense and disarms and am not experienced in kali just know some of the basics a friend showed me(he is an instructor but has decades of martial arts experience as do i), but we did drill all these disarms a lot then tried pressure testing them, and i don't think either of us managed to get the other one's thumb and perform an actual disarm, once you have the thumb the disarm is easy however getting the thumb was almost impossible. what we found as well was that the way we would attack was not what was taught to be defended against as would not wave the knife around infront but would keep it back safely away from disarm range, then approach and use other hand to create an opportunity to stab, often by trying to pin arms across chest and then sewing machine. we decided i think if in a real knife fight what seemed to be most effective was to not go for disarms but just to grab them if the opportunity presented it's self, however trying to go for them resulted in extra stabs (so if someone had never held a knife then there would probably be more opportunity, as both of us have quite a bit of experience so react to disarm attempts and as we train together can often see what they will be going for). so what we found most effective was to jam the elbow of the knife hand whilst using your other arm to try to gain a dominant position (whether by striking or whatever techniques you already know) and to use that moment of control to disengage and run away. so basically only fighting them to get an opportunity to run away. it's like you can train wing chun 20 years every day but in a real fight no techniques come out only reactions and intent, you will never see anyone throw a bong - wu or a tan - da on the street or even in the ring the thing that does come out is the principles and structure (like dominating the center, upper body triangle, structure of a guard) so you will see the structure of well drilled techniques and their intent but will not see the actual technique, so all the intracesis(ok no idea how that should be spelt) and finger positioning disappear but the principles and structure will remain. so from my experience grabbing the thumb is expecting too much in a real life combat scenario but that is only my opinion

Another interesting point that was made at the end of the video is that once you have engaged and a fight has begun, no matter what happens, you cannot run until the fight is then finished. This is fairly true in any situation but more so when there is a weapon involved.

You're sort of correct. Understand you may always be cut. Fine tuning you brain and muscles helps you survive in an engagement lasting long than 2 sec. The untrained person will die; they have no mental or reflex battery to rely on.

6:10 Hi guys! Son Tsi here from the viper kuen school. You probably haven’t heard of us. We are relatively new. I wanted to shed light on Dianna and Ron’s expert tutorial. I mean this very respectfully, and in no way do I think I’m superior to Ron. In no way. But.. with that said. The techniques where we “Try to take a knife?” I’m thinking we ought to scrap that modality. If you pause the camera on the part where Dianna sweeps his arm to the outside and uses a HUEN SAO then uses her open hand to push the knife away with the back of her arm. If you pause it on that take. You’ll notice, the minute you make contact with the opponents knife hand. He’ll likely JERK or PULL BACK. This we refer to as a FRENCH FRIED FINGER EFFECT. Look at when she puts her arm on RONS knife arm near his thumb. If he even turns the knife slightly, just by happenstance even, your going to get cut. The only reason I’m doing this comment, is because I’m working on a modality that does way better. Using BUI SAO to injure the eyes while grabbing in such a way as to twist the attacker around facing away from you. Injuring the eyes viciously. I’ll keep you posted because I’m not completely done with it yet. 🥊💥💯

The trouble with these self-defence methods is that the majority of the time they don’t work in real situations and give naive people the idea that they can protect themselves. Maybe better than not having any experience at all but still dangerous if instead of avoiding and escalating situation or running away from a situation you feel confident and stay then try to fight. An experienced martial artist gets into a situation at a bar, most altercations happen that way; the experienced martial artist has had enough of this thug threatening him and his wife so he puts his glass down to prepare himself to defend or attack the guy, the thug just shoves the glass in his face, he doesn’t put his glass down, different way of thinking. Its split seconds that make the difference, by the time most people realise they are going to be involved in bother it’s over. Most people who get stabbed don't even know that the person has knife and the don't realise they have been cut until they see their entrails hanging down past their knees; basically people with knives don't flash them about or even signal that they intend to attack you.

I've been in martial arts since I was a teenager and have practiced a handful of styles and I fully admit there was a time when I thought/believed [a lot] of this kind of technique from karate all the way to escrima arts would be effective if learned properly. As I've grown in martial arts, combat sports and "self defense". my honest opinion regarding knife disarms are [for the most part] a waste of time and have an almost zero chance of ever being pulled off in a real world situation. main reason being is the overly complex fine motor movement and number of movements required to even learn it in a controlled and relax environment. More so to the point it has been scientifically verified that when real stress and adrenaline dump happens in true fear of bodily harm or death that fine motor control is basically gone and you're left with gross motor control. I keep this in mind and apply this critique to many of the long standing traditional martial arts and yes, ultimately, this is just my opinion and I give it honestly and without malice. respect to all practioners 🙏🏽

They do work in eskrima/arnis/kali. If they didn't, many of the masters in the Philippines would be dead. They use to fight off pirates, invaders and each other in duels. or when attacked. The Philippines has some serious crime and violence there. Just don't get to fancy. That stuff is for fun and understanding concepts, not specific situations per say.

@@redpillpusher The real applications comes though the progressive stress testing and resistence as you get a better understanding. In our class the teacher even includes sparring, weapons vs weapons, empty hands vs weapons, and empty hands vs empty hands. To only do drills is not enough to apply when it counts. That is what my teachers expresses. I can't speak for others. But i understand your skepticism. i just feel you are missing some important elements from what was traditionally done.

I agree 100%. I've studied martial arts for 40 years. I have rank in many styles and have traveled the world to study martial styles. Simplicity is the key. Overly flowery moves look great and get you students, but never work in a real world situation. One need to look no further than western boxing. Boxers train their whole lives on simple effective strikes/Defense /Footwork/Angles. And even they cant pull it off every time against an opponent. Now think of a part time Martial artist who goes to the dojo 5x a week. Is he really going to pull off some Yip Man style Gung Fu move? Hell No, not in a million years. Even if giving the benefit of the doubt and you get a highly skilled individual who trains Gung Fu all his life, it still won't work for the above OPs reasons. Ive debated this for years and people don't like to hear it but Its the truth. And sometimes its a hard pill to swallow.

In Kali we NEVER "look" for the disarm. You are correct yet incorrect. They can and do work r and should be trained so you have that option. However, that is never the first choice. If it's there we take it, if not (given that running is not an option) you do whatever needs to be done. Like any technique, disarms are a tool. Granted, not the easiest to do in most situations and I agree, stress and adrenaline should be factored in but like any tool, there is a time and place for it.

Locking the thumb digit is correct, but never ever touch the blade, instead slam to back of palm on the knuckles trying to break the wrist.. The hand will open and knife will drop.. follow up with open hand strike to the voice box & then snep the eye ball with speed... They will grasp the eye and choke, then break the knee joint. real street fighting .. I have doe it 11 times as a nightclub security. also disarmed 4 handguns & 2 rifle types.. In my life I been taking martial arts from age of 8 year sold till now 57.. doing this techniques must be done 500 times and brushed up 20 times a day.. speed, technique & perfection is key...

love to ya bro..I love that initial cali style strike to the fore arm and the big loop pushing the the knife hand towards him, but I am way to ignorant to do much more.If I get that arm pushed down and chased around in a circle and catch it with one hand I will grab it with both hands any way I can get a hold of it. the wing chun fellow said "control the weapon at all costs".I am not letting go to grab the thumb base I am not trying to knock that knife out of his hand, while I try to hold on with one hand. I will be kicking shins stomping feet trying to stab the guy with his own hand, biting beating that hand on anything handy, twisting that arm out of the socket. You are correct about "don't let them pull the weapon, and grabbing those hands." I am not nearly so polite as you are the second they reach for that weapon I grab those hands and head butt them as fast as I can, and push. them back wards as fast as I can, as far as I can.Hope fully when they fall I will be on top of them driving the other guys elbows in the ground with all my weight on my hands.I really love the video but I am not that skilled.

100%. Beginning was extremely practical. The rest of it is "art" with no street value for anyone who doesn't practice this hours a day for years before needing to use it.

Anyone trained by the Inosanto crew is well aware of the loss of fine motor skill in an adrenalin dump. They have been talking about that for 20 years. That is why they use their forearm to redirect instead of trying to grab from the get go. You slide up using feel instead of coordination. People at high risk of a knife attack do train this stuff for years.

The knife is a sneaky weapon so to speak, to show the weapon is for intimidation most times the person using it will target the weaker and better to give up your belongings than taking a chance on trying to use any of these moves. You will get cut just depends on how badly it will happen to you

I don't agree with the 1st technique that you showed as far as grabbing his hands when he was reaching for his blade because you're gonna get punched in the face and then you're just gonna pull the knife at that point and step you anyway Yes this is just my opinion but I've been around the block a few times And that would not work the 2nd technique that you showed I bow to you sir It made sense It was a all around decent technique I have been studying many years Like I said I've been around the block quite a few times in conclusion have a great day thank you so much for your knowledge

There are some gullible folks online to think this is the way to retreat a knife attack. Of course, with this style, you are bound to get stabbed a few times.

I get it I see the logic but the mechanics of being able to execute it are another thing. Has anyone use a knife disarm technique similar to this in a real life situation?
