Another shining example of why knife combat is far, far, far scarier than people realize. There's a reason daggers and tantos were the weapon of choice among armored medieval knights and samurai. Very few things are more deadly or precise than an extension of your hand that is essentially a razor. Bullets. That's pretty much it.
@davoid1792
@davoid1792 3 жыл бұрын
Swords, katanas and others were powerful but slow and further away, in true CQC you need a knife, people don't realize how weak flesh is, nor how sharp these blades would be, the easily cut to the bone if they were made correctly or even decently. Simple tantos could easily slide between the armor plating and sink deep into your organs, while European daggers easily slashed through arteries and limbs, you can cleanly cut off a wrist or foot in only a few short motions. Knife fighting is deadly and commonly ignored, there is a reason so many serial killers utilize knives, they are everywhere and are easily used to slaughter people. I recently got these awesome ceramic knives, so extremely sharp it cuts through a paper towel I held in one hand! This thing would easily cut through my bone with little damage. Terrifying.

I have an theory on the “you’ll die if you keep fighting” thing he does repeatedly. Adrenaline can be a type of energy that can at certain times give people the strength or power to keep going, I think telling them they’re gonna die and explaining why will lead to a drop in their adrenaline rush, leading them towards deciding to get help rather than keep trying to kill him. You can do a lot in the few seconds with adrenaline before death, even in real life. It’s not John showing mercy, it’s him making sure he can turn his back after the fight. I doubt the writers or anybody on the movie were trying for this I just thought that a notorious assassin would play strange mind games for an advantage.

That's a pretty neat idea, psychological aspect of fighting is severely underutilised in movies and games, wish that more scenes would depict minor antagonists as actual characters that can be bargained with, demoralised and so on. That would be a nice way to show difference in motivation and cleverness of the protagonist. We're never going to get that, are we?

Kaen Awoken true, I don’t think he’s shutting off someone else’s adrenaline, but sometimes just having a change in tone and in the situation by your enemy suddenly talking to you could offset someone after an severe injury with that opponent still in your face. I don’t claim this is something the movie did at all, just an idea I had.

It’s nice seeing an analysis of the knife fights in John Wick, seeing that most cover the gun fights and hand to hand. I do have to say that the opening was a bit off given context of the film. They were shooting at each other while trying to remain inconspicuous and that opening fight was a remnant of that shoot out hence why he was low-key trying to stab him instead of going all out. But I’m definitely liking this analysis.

You have to figure they're operating at a fantasy level of skill. So the whole 'knife in the aorta' thing makes sense, plenty of people survive insane stuff simply because the object (knife in this case) was left in place until it could be safely removed by a surgeon. I figure the doctors in this universe are quite good, especially those that would be within the assassin world, they'd know how to do some impossible things you'd not see in the general populous.

At the very least, it is true that the guy would die much faster by removing the blade.
@daedalron
@daedalron 3 жыл бұрын
@Dominik Dinik Well, mouth, nose, eyes, none of those are per-se absolutely vital organs. The aorta, on the other hand... If the blade is preventing the blood from flowing, the time before death is at best 4-5 minutes (after that you're brain-dead anyway). So it would depend on how much of the aorta the blade cut. If it's a clean complete cut, the guy has absolutely no chance of surviving. Even if the fight happened in a hospital, just the time for the surgeons to arrive and to cut the guy open to repair the aorta may be too long for him to survive. If the aorta has only been grazed, and the blood flow is still decent while the blade staying in prevents blood leakage, he has a decent change of surviving, as long as state-of-the-art surgeons get their hands on him ASAP.

Even so, weird shit happens in reality bub, like this 80+ yr old guy who survived the same thing that killed Steve Irwin cause the barb was left in. Though you could argue that's the heart, just google it and you'll find examples. www.nbcnews.com/id/15321718/ns/us_news-life/t/leaping-stingray-stabs-florida-man-near-heart/#.X1bMDnlKgjI

@Aaron Smith Of course. This is all said in good spirits bud, I don't do negativity or shitting on others. Any kind of major artery injury anywhere has a high mortality rate. Especially true for the aorta at any position.

It never ceases to amazing me how people will weigh in, seemingly authoritatively, on subjects with less than zero experience/knowledge. I'm not a doctor, but I do know how to ask a doctor/surgeon the relevant questions. Given that an average dagger thickness is 0.635 cm and the human aorta ranges between 3.2 cm and 5.0 cm in diameter, it's entirely plausible that he could have punctured the aortic arch, through the intercostal space (ICS), with his blade horizontal like that. In this case, it would not sever the vessel or cut off blood flow. In these cases where a large vessel is punctured cleanly and the object is still present, it's not uncommon for it to offer enough pressure to keep the blood from substantially leaking out. In these types of traumas, I've seen trained first responders use any sort of cloth (i.e. gauze/bandage) to carefully immobilize the piercing object, until a surgeon can begin their work. Please don't spread ignorance and misinformation. It's one of the plights plaguing our society, especially in the information age. You have the sum of nearly all human knowledge at your finger tips. Exercise some wisdom and access this information.

Any knife fight is terrifying irl. But a skilled practitioner of Kali is on another level!! As a former martial artist myself, I just hope that Kali instructors are as effective at instilling the right attitude into their chosen students where maiming/fatal techniques are only ever used as a last resort & refuse to teach those with bad/malicious attitudes which can not be turned around. Kali skills are no joke & do not belong in the hands of those with evil intent. Such knowledge is a gift - not a right!

For that first break down scene, I believe they were both holding a knife in one of their hands which means neither had a free hand to do one of the other moves suggested. When Cassian caught John's knife hand, John could have caught Cassian's at the same time which kind of put them at a stalemate so in that situation, Cassian probably thought kneeing the knife into John's leg was the best option :)

It's technically possible to survive a stab to the aorta assuming is stays in there. It takes about 30 mins for a person to actually die from blood loss from that specific wound. Can they fight? No, any movement will cause more bleeding and that's assuming they don't pass out due to low blood pressure but a skilled surgeon could save your life.

@@aurelian2668 yes. They'll have to move slow to make sure not to widen the wound to the artery. Remember this in an emergency situation. If you are ever impaled, knife, pipe, pole, do not pull it out, it might be acting as a finger in the dam. If anything pack bandages around wound and secure it best as possible so it doesn't move. Something I like about entertainment like movies, tv shows, and animation when they are being compared to realistic fights is that, while a decent sense of realism is good, it's more about the *feel* of the fight, not how it actually is. You see this *especially* in animation like Naruto or the 2003 Clone Wars series where movements are greatly exaggerated in order to get the viewer to feel exhilarated as if they were in the fight alongside the characters.

The context for first one was because they didn't want to get into a fight just yet. If you watch the lead up to that moment, you can see that they weren't trying to create a scene and so that the holding the wrist was trying to fight without actually fighting. Though it resulted in a real fight anyways.
